Systemic candidiasis is frequently unrecognized before death of the patient because of lack of specific clinical signs, insensitive laboratory tests, and difficulties in culturing Candida albicans from the blood. Two strains of laboratory white mice, CFLP and LACA, were infected with the metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps. The serum from each infected mouse was tested for antibodies on double-diffusion gel plates and the number of antigen-antibody precipitin lines formed related (a) to the duration of the infection and (b) to the volume of metacestodes. There was a significant increase in the number of antigen-antibody precipitins with regard to the time infected but not to the volume of metacestodes. The pattern of development of the antigen-antibody precipitation system was also examined.

In the present study, cellular and humoral responses to Faenia rectivirgula antigens were evaluated in seven subjects, members of a family who lived and worked on a dairy farm. Four subjects had clinical features of hypersensitivity pneumonitis after exposure to moldy hay. The other three subjects had no clinical disease in spite of similar exposure. Citrate synthase from human heart was purified by affinity chromatography with Sepharose-ATP. The molecular weight (100,000) and the presence of two presumably identical subunits do not differ from other mammalian citrate synthases. In the course of studying antinuclear antibodies in the rheumatic diseases, a new precipitin reaction (provisionally referred to as PM-1) was observed between calf thymus nuclear extract and polymyositis sera. Objectives of this study were to further define the immunologic nature of this reaction and to determine its specificity for polymyositis. Until now the detection of chymotrypsic or polysaccharidic arcs among precipitating systems indicated a positive diagnosis of Farmer's lung disease (FLD). It was shown that the occurrence of chymotrypsic activity is not absolutely correlated with the presence of clinical disease. The syndrome of Henoch-Schoenlein purpura developed in a 74-year-old woman after receiving streptokinase as thrombolytic therapy for an acute myocardial infarction. Renal biopsy revealed mesangial hypercellularity with deposits of IgA. Skin biopsy also revealed IgA deposition. Immunological studies showed evidence of sensitization to streptokinase. Elevated IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgE antistreptokinase antibodies were detected in the acute serum. Positive immediate skin reactivity to streptokinase was also present. Serum precipitins to streptokinase disappeared when IgA was removed from the serum.

Ten cases of pulmonary mycetoma diagnosed in our service between 1985-1992 were retrospectively studied. Two cases of hypersensitivity pneumonitis in grain workers are described. Both cases had evidence of sensitization to the gram-negative bacteria Erwinia herbicola as judged by skin tests, detection of serum precipitins, and inhalation challenge. A 54-year-old man presented with features consistent with extrinsic allergic alveolitis occurring after contact with his pet birds. A study of farmer's lung (FL) disease was carried out in 197 subjects engaged in farming and having respiratory complaints of varying duration. It revealed that 13.2% of the subjects had precipitating antibodies against thermophilic actinomycetes, with Faenia rectivirgula (Micropolyspora faeni) alone accounting for 85% of the positive reactions.
