Offensive and Defensive Exploitation of Ants by Termitophagous Spiders (Araneae: Zodariidae).

Myrmecophagy is one of the most common types of dietary specialization among predators. It can include exploitation of ants, termites, or both. Although ants and termites share a few traits, they are distantly related and possess different defensive mechanisms. Therefore, adaptations to ants and termites should differ, especially in arthropod predators of similar body size as their prey. We investigate offensive and defensive adaptations in Zodariidae spider genus Diores, reported to feed on termites. The ancestral state reconstruction of the diet favored termitophagy for the genus, but metaba

Are the effects of hunger stage-specific? A case study in an aphidophagous ladybird beetle.

Food availability is a fundamental factor determining an animal's potential fitness. Carry-over effects of food limitation from development to adulthood are known to influence reproduction, ageing, and tolerance to stress. We have examined the effect of stage-specific variation (before adult emergence or pre-emergence, post-emergence and post-mating) in food availability in Propylea dissecta (Mulsant). Larvae were reared separately on two different pre-emergence food regimes (abundant or restricted) until pupation. Newly emerged adults were further split into two groups and placed on abundant

Trophic niche, capture efficiency and venom profiles of six sympatric ant-eating spider species (Araneae: Zodariidae).

The arms race between specialist predators and their prey has resulted in the evolution of a variety of specific adaptations. In venomous predators, this can include venom composition, particularly if predators are specialized on dangerous prey. Here, we performed an integrative study using six species of highly specialized ant-eating spiders of the genus Zodarion to investigate their phylogeny, realized trophic niche, efficacy in the capture of various ant species and venom composition. Data on natural diet obtained by next-generation sequencing and field observations showed that the six Zoda

Changes in predator exposure, but not in diet, induce phenotypic plasticity in scorpion venom.

Animals embedded between trophic levels must simultaneously balance pressures to deter predators and acquire resources. Venomous animals may use venom toxins to mediate both pressures, and thus changes in this balance may alter the composition of venoms. Basic theory suggests that greater exposure to a predator should induce a larger proportion of defensive venom components relative to offensive venom components, while increases in arms races with prey will elicit the reverse. Alternatively, reducing the need for venom expenditure for food acquisition, for example because of an increase in sca

The brain and behavior of the tentacled snake.

Tentacled snakes (Erpeton tentaculatum) are aquatic predators that feed exclusively on fish. They have a unique pair of tentacles projecting from the face and an unusual J-shaped hunting posture. These features have been the subject of speculation for over a century. In a series of behavioral studies, tentacled snakes were found to exploit fish escape responses by startling fish toward their strike. This remarkable, deceptive behavior takes advantage of the stereotyped C-start escape response of fish. For some fish approach angles, snakes predicted future fish behavior and accurately struck at

Exposure to TMT odor affects adrenal sympathetic nerve activity and behavioral consequences in rats.

The odor of 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT), a synthetic compound isolated from fox feces, induces various emotional behavioral and stress responses. Here we examined the effect of TMT on behavioral responses and adrenal sympathetic nerve activity (ASNA) in rats. TMT increased freezing behavior, defensive-burying and defensive-attack, and decreased exploration, grooming and approach behaviors. On the other hand, butyric acid (BA), a pungent but non-predatory odor, increased defensive-burying only. TMT increased ASNA strongly, whereas the effects of BA increased ASNA extremely weakl

Feeding in Flow: Environmental Flow Conditions Alter Prey Capture Kinematics in Fish.

AbstractVirtually all terrestrial, aerial, and aquatic organisms regularly interact with moving fluids. In marine and freshwater habitats, water flow is one of the most significant environmental variables impacting the ecology, behavior, biomechanics, and, ultimately, evolution of fishes. Although predatory fishes must attack prey rapidly and accurately across a range of flow conditions in nature, their feeding is almost always studied in still water. Thus, how fishes alter prey capture in response to ecologically relevant flow conditions remains poorly understood. Here, we determined how larg

FracFeed: Global database of the fraction of feeding predators.

The proportion of individuals that are found to have empty stomachs during a survey of a predator population's diet has been used as an indicator of the average individual's state of energy balance and of the degree to which its feeding rate (i.e., its functional response) is saturated with respect to prey availability. As such, the proportion of empty stomachs provides insights into the effects of prey on predators and vice versa, although it is typically unreported in deference to descriptions of the contents of the non-empty stomachs. The FracFeed database is an ongoing compilation of the p

Antipredation escape behaviour differs between fighter and sneaker males in the two-spotted spider mite.

Predation risk can strongly influence the evolution of reproductive tactics because behaviours that enhance mating success often increase vulnerability to predators. Males of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, exhibit distinct reproductive tactics, including fighting and sneaking, as a conditional strategy. We investigated whether escape behaviour in response to predation risk differs between fighter and sneaker males during precopulatory mate guarding. To examine responses to different predator-associated cues, we introduced different developmental stages (adult female, deutony

Feeding habits and influencing factors of Coilia nasus in the main stream of the Huaihe River in Anhui, China.

Coilia nasus is one of the dominant fish species in the Huaihe River basin, with significant ecological and economic values. Research in feeding ecology is a great step towards deep understanding its life history. We analyzed stomach contents of 474 C. nasus samples collected in the main stream of the Huaihe River in Anhui in May and September of 2023, to investigate the composition of food, feeding intensity, feeding strategies, and the impact of environmental factors on food composition. Results showed that C. nasus in the main stream of the Huaihe River in Anhui primarily feed on 14 groups

Behavioural changes in aposematic Heliconius melpomene butterflies in response to their predatory bird calls.

Prey-predator interactions have resulted in the evolution of many anti-predatory traits. One of them is the ability for prey to listen to predators and avoid them. Although prey anti-predatory behavioural responses to predator auditory cues are well described in a wide range of taxa, studies on whether butterflies change their behaviours in response to their predatory calls are lacking. Heliconius butterflies are unpalatable and form Müllerian mimicry rings as morphological defence strategies against their avian predators. Like many other butterflies in the Nymphalidae family, some Heliconius

Suction feeding biomechanics of Polypterus bichir: investigating linkage mechanisms and the contributions of cranial kinesis to oral cavity volume change.

Many fishes use substantial cranial kinesis to rapidly increase buccal cavity volume, pulling prey into the mouth via suction feeding. Living polypterids are a key lineage for understanding the evolution and biomechanics of suction feeding because of their phylogenetic position and unique morphology. Polypterus bichir have fewer mobile cranial elements compared with teleosts [e.g. immobile (pre)maxillae] but successfully generate suction through dorsal, ventral and lateral oral cavity expansion. However, the relative contributions of these motions to suction feeding success have not been quant

Complex odor from plants under attack: herbivore's enemies react to the whole, not its parts.

BACKGROUND: Insect herbivory induces plant odors that attract herbivores' natural enemies. Assuming this attraction emerges from individual compounds, genetic control over odor emission of crops may provide a rationale for manipulating the distribution of predators used for pest control. However, studies on odor perception in vertebrates and invertebrates suggest that olfactory information processing of mixtures results in odor percepts that are a synthetic whole and not a set of components that could function as recognizable individual attractants. Here, we ask if predators respond to herbivo

Non-consumptive effects of Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) derived semiochemicals on Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Biological control agents are central to Integrated Pest Management, where they suppress herbivorous pests through direct consumption. However, natural enemies can exert non-consumptive effects (NCEs) on prey when predation risk is detected, altering behavior, physiology, or life-history traits in ways that reduce predation risk but impose fitness costs associated with anti-predator defense. Often, NCEs reduce pest pressure on plants via risk-induced changes in herbivore prey feeding, reproduction, and immigration/emigration. Predator-emitted odors are important risk cues, yet predator-derived

Reduced predator avoidance follows ocular and lateral line pathology in minnow species after diesel exposure.

Petroleum chemicals reach freshwater habitats and can elicit acute toxic effects on ecosystem members.1Until recently standardized acute toxicology experiments and water quality standards (also referred to as Maximum Allowable Concentrations in some jurisdictions) focused on mortality of aquatic organisms after 96 h of toxicant exposure2,3, but in nature sublethal effects can manifest into mortality and in lotic environments (streams and rivers) exposure times can be far shorter (< 24 h). Here we show that Plains Minnow (Hybognathus placitus), Fathead Minnow (Pimephales promelas), and Flathead

Large carnivores shape road safety through effects on prey space use.

Quantifying the ecosystem services provided by large carnivores through their top-down effects on prey1,2,3 is an important strategy for promoting human-carnivore coexistence.4,5,6,7 Such "predation services" may include reductions in wildlife-vehicle collisions mediated by changes in the abundance or distribution of ungulate prey. However, empirical demonstrations are few8,9 and present limited opportunity to understand the mechanisms by which carnivores may influence road safety through their impacts on prey space use. We leveraged a large camera trap dataset and spatial data on wildlife-veh

Regional variation in within- and transgenerational responses to an invasive predator.

When confronted with environmental stress, individuals may enhance their fitness by altering their phenotype via within-generation plasticity (WGP) or their offspring's phenotype via transgenerational plasticity (TGP). Despite growing appreciation of TGP in adapting to environmental change, our understanding of how it may vary geographically among populations having different eco-evolutionary histories remains limited. In the Gulf of Maine, the carnivorous snail, Nucella lapillus, must solve the foraging-predation risk trade-off by reducing their vulnerability to invasive predatory green crabs

Modeling how hunting strategies and pack size shape each other.

Social foraging exhibits unexpected features, such as the existence of a group size threshold above which hunting success is not improved, mainly because, above this threshold, additional individuals are free-riders that withhold effort. These observations have been supported by computational models of group hunting, which reveal a mechanism that causes hunting success to peak at small group sizes. In the model, hunters follow two simple rules: approach the prey until a safe distance is reached, and when closer to the prey than a critical avoidance distance, move away from other hunters. The m

Evolution of aquatic snails' defences resulted in clade-specific differences in egg toxicity, pigments and warning coloration.

Oviparous animals have evolved diverse strategies that deter egg predation. In terrestrial species, these often include noxious compounds and aposematic signalling, but little is known in freshwater environments. Here, we unravel the evolutionary and ecological strategies of Pomacea, aquatic snails that lay conspicuous masses of toxic orange-pink eggs to reduce predation risk. We reveal the interplay among warning coloration, toxicity and predator visual perception that enables the evolution of advanced chemical defences. We provide evidence that snails modify dietary carotenoids and that this

Effects of selfing and outcrossing on transgenerational responses to predation risk.

Phenotypic plasticity, an organism's ability to change traits in response to its environment, can improve an individual's fitness by promoting a phenotype better suited for current environmental conditions. Phenotypic expression can be altered by direct experiences (i.e., within-generation plasticity) or experiences of previous generations (i.e., transgenerational plasticity). Transgenerational plasticity can help offspring overcome environmental stressors, such as predation, using epigenetic information from their parent(s). Offspring typically receive information from two parents though simu
