Electrophysiological and Histopathological Evaluation of Effects of Sodium-2 Mercaptoethanesulfonate Used for Middle Ear Surgery on Facial Nerve Functions.

OBJECTIVE: Sodium-2-mercaptoethanesulfonate (MESNA) is widely used in medicine because of its antioxidant and mucolytic effects. In recent years, it has been used in otologic surgery. Because it cleaves disulfide bonds, it is used to easily dissect the epithelial matrix in cholesteatoma and atelectasis. In this study, we hypothesized that MESNA does not have any toxic effect on the facial nerve, and the effects of MESNA on the facial nerve were examined histologically and electrophysiologically. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty Wistar albino rats were used. Groups A and B were designated as the

Comparison of the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire, Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire, and PROMIS Instruments in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Patient-reported outcomes are important to assess improvement after surgery. Common instruments for carpal tunnel syndrome include the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire (MHQ) and Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (CTQ). The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) are newer measures. We evaluated how the PROMIS Pain Interference (PI) and Upper Extremity (UE) scores change after carpal tunnel release. METHODS: All adult patients with carpal tunnel syndrome treated surgically were asked to participate in this prospective study. PROMIS instruments, MHQ, and

The prevalence of pulmonary arterial hypertension before and after atrial septal defect closure at adult age: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The development or persistence of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) after atrial septal defect (ASD) closure at adult age is associated with a poor prognosis. The objective of this review was to investigate the prevalence of PAH before and after ASD closure and to identify factors that are associated with PAH. METHODS: EMBASE and MEDLINE databases were searched for publications until March 2017. All studies reporting the prevalence of PAH or data on pulmonary artery pressures both before and after surgical or percutaneous ASD closure in an adult population (≥16 years of age) w

Concentration of UHCL1 in the Serum of Children with Acute Appendicitis, Before and After Surgery, and Its Correlation with CRP and Prealbumin.

UNLABELLED: Ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation plays a crucial role in various cellular processes, including signal transduction, cell differentiation, and stress response. Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase 1 (UCHL1) is a unique deubiquitinating enzyme that has both hydrolase and ligase activities. The aim of this study was the determination of UCHL1 concentration in serum of children with appendicitis, before and after the surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 42 children with acute appendicitis, who were managed at the Pediatric Surgery Department, between 2013 and 2014, were randomly included in

Preoperative symptoms and postoperative sequelae of intrathoracic neurogenic tumors: a single institution's experience.

OBJECTIVE: Most intrathoracic neurogenic tumors are resected for therapeutic diagnosis; many adult tumors are benign. However, few studies have reported the preoperative symptoms, postoperative modalities, and sequelae of these tumors. We focused on and evaluated the diversity and postoperative prognosis of these tumors. METHODS: We assessed 31 consecutive cases of intrathoracic neurogenic tumors resected at Tsuchiura Kyodo General Hospital between 1988 and 2012. Two cases involved multiple tumors; therefore, complete resection or enucleation was performed only in the remaining 29 cases. The

Pre- and post-operative diastolic dysfunction in patients with valvular heart disease: diagnosis and therapeutic implications.

Patients with valvular heart disease often have left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. This review summarizes the underlying mechanisms for diastolic dysfunction in patients with mitral and aortic valve disease. In addition to load, intrinsic myocardial abnormalities occur related to changes in sarcomeric proteins, abnormal calcium handling, and fibrosis. Echocardiography is the initial modality for the diagnosis of left ventricular diastolic function. Although there are challenges to conventional Doppler parameters of diastolic function, it is often possible to arrive at a clinically useful

The impact of an incomplete preoperative colonoscopy in patients with colorectal cancer.

Total large bowel evaluation remains an essential step in the treatment of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Colonoscopy is the gold standard in the evaluation of the colon for colorectal tumors, but may be incomplete due to tumor obstruction, which is a frequent event in distal cancers. Double-contrast barium enema has a lower accuracy and is not ideal in the presence of signs of obstruction. In theory, intraoperative colonoscopy is a valid alternative, but its routine use is impeded by various practical limitations. Preoperative survey of the colon in 521 consecutive patients treated fo

Preoperative nutritional status as a predictor of postoperative morbidity in pediatric gastrointestinal surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is common among children undergoing gastrointestinal surgery and is frequently compounded by underlying gastrointestinal pathology, chronic inflammation, and impaired nutrient intake. Although preoperative nutritional status has been suggested as an important determinant of postoperative outcomes in pediatric surgical patients, the magnitude and consistency of its association with postoperative morbidity in pediatric gastrointestinal surgery remain incompletely defined. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate and quantitatively synthesize the association between preoper

The role of preoperative sarcopenia in post-nephrectomy prognosis of renal cell carcinoma: an integrated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although several studies have suggested that sarcopenia is associated with adverse outcomes in kidney cancer patients undergoing nephrectomy, the results have been inconsistent. Therefore, this meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and post-nephrectomy survival in kidney cancer patients. METHODS: A thorough search was executed across multiple databases, including MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, to identify pertinent studies up to August, 2025. By employing random/fixed effects models, we calculated multivariate-adjusted hazard ra

Pre-surgical risk assessment in patients with cirrhosis.

Over the last decades, significant improvements in the clini- cal management of patients with cirrhosis have increased their life expectancy. Thus, indications for surgical procedures other than liver transplantation are becoming more frequent. However, patients with advanced liver disease are at high risk of perioperative morbidity and mortality. This is the consequence of multiple factors that include the presence of portal hypertension, alterations on hemostasis and coagulation, the immune dysfunction that entails an increased risk of infections, and the impaired synthesis of proteins that

A systematic review of preoperative predictors for postoperative clinical outcomes following lumbar discectomy.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Sciatica is often caused by a herniated lumbar intervertebral disc. When conservative treatment fails, a lumbar discectomy can be performed. Surgical treatment via lumbar discectomy is not always successful and may depend on a variety of preoperative factors. It remains unclear which, if any, preoperative factors can predict postsurgical clinical outcomes. PURPOSE: This review aimed to determine preoperative predictors that are associated with postsurgical clinical outcomes in patients undergoing lumbar discectomy. STUDY DESIGN: This is a systematic review. METHODS: This
