The authors summarize their experiences collected from psychotherapeutic treatment of anorectic and bulimic patients treated at the outpatient and inpatient clinics of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Semmelweis University in the period of 1984-2008. The introduction provides an overview of the literature, that represents a theoretical background to their therapeutic strategies. Afterwards, insights are given about the authors own treatment strategies, that varied, although only slightly in different time periods. Therapeutic outcomes are summarized separately for groups of rest

Progressive hepatolenticular degeneration, or Wilson's disease, is a genetic disorder of copper metabolism. Knowledge of the clinical presentations and treatment of the disease are important both to the generalist and to specialists in gastroenterology and hepatology, neurology, psychiatry, and paediatrics. Wilson's disease invariably results in severe disability and death if untreated. The diagnosis is easily overlooked but if discovered early, effective treatments are available that will prevent or reverse many manifestations of this disorder. Studies have identified the role of copper in di

It has been postulated that immigrant children are at increased risk of mental health problems. This study examined differences in psychopathology between immigrant and non-immigrant adolescents admitted for the first time to a child and adolescent inpatient psychiatry unit. Participants were 234 adolescents (191 non-immigrants and 43 immigrants). There were significant differences between the two groups in relation to certain stressors: parental separation, family breakdown, being under state custody, physical and/or psychological maltreatment and sexual abuse. Differences between the main di

Current biological psychiatry, it is frequently claimed by its opponents, is "biologistic" and unduly narrows psychological disorders to neurobiology and molecular biology. They deem a complete neuroscientific reduction of the mental phenomena to be impossible because of the impossibility of reducing certain phenomena, such as the individual subjective experience. If such a reduction is nevertheless undertaken it is ultimately to the disadvantage of the patients. We argue in this article that the very term "biologism" has to be put under scrutiny in the first place. As a result it becomes obvi

The lifetime prevalence of panic attacks is 28.3% in American adults 18 years and older. The age of onset of panic attack extends throughout adulthood; however, it typically develops in early adulthood, with median age of onset of 22 years [Kessler R.C., Chiu W.T., Jin R., Ruscio A.M., Shear K., Walters E.E. The epidemiology of panic attacks, panic disorder, and agoraphobia in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication. Arch Gen Psychiatry. 2006 Apr;63(4):415-24.]. As reported in our case, panic attacks could induce transient leukocytosis in healthy adults. If practitioners recognize this ass

Pathological gambling is an emerging psychiatric disorder that has medical, psychiatric, and social consequences. Recently, research has been focusing on identifying which portions of the population are most vulnerable to developing problems related to ongoing gambling. Specific populations of interest have included adolescents, elderly, minorities, those with comorbid psychiatric or substance use disorders, and gender differences. Each group possesses unique biological, psychological, and/or social characteristics that confer a vulnerability to develop pathological gambling behaviors. Being a

Deinstitutionalization is a complex process that in the past was often misunderstood solely as a run down or even closure of psychiatric hospitals. Although chronically mentally ill patients were prevented from long term hospitalisation some fundamental mistakes were repeated often: patients were simply discharged without any preparations and outpatient care was badly organised. In some cases this led to therapeutic neglect, social disintegration, homelessness, incarceration or other forms of dramatic loss of quality of life. These findings are internationally confirmed although there are rema

A program for women with schizophrenia that combines inpatient, outpatient, and outreach services is described. The program was established at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto in 1995. Services include a comprehensive patient and family assessment, with subsequent recommendations to the treating clinician about differential diagnosis, psychopharmacologic and psychosocial treatments, and patient management during pregnancy and early parenthood. Other components of the program are home-based outreach services, substance abuse counseling, instruction of new mothers

OBJECTIVE: Delirium in the setting of critical illness occurs in 15%-60% of pediatric patients and is associated with increased duration of hospital admission. Strategies for symptom management include minimizing exposure to deliriogenic medications, optimizing day-night cycles, and in some cases prescribing antipsychotic medications. Symptom management occurs while simultaneously identifying and treating the underlying etiology. Over a 5-year period, our pediatric intensive care units implemented several unit-based initiatives to prevent and minimize the severity of delirium in critically ill

BACKGROUND: Qualitative studies surrounding patient experiences of intraoperative pain during cesarean delivery (PDCD) are lacking. The primary outcome of this study was to identify themes that describe experiences of PDCD performed under neuraxial anesthesia from the patients' perspective. Secondary outcomes were to provide exemplar quotations for themes identified and summarize patient experiences.
METHODS: This prospective qualitative study included semi-structured interviews of patients who delivered at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford, California, between 2023 and 2024. Cons

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an important health risk factor for military personnel deployed in modern warfare. In World War I this condition (then known as shell shock or 'neurasthenia') was such a problem that 'forward psychiatry' was begun by French doctors in 1915. Some British doctors tried general anaesthesia as a treatment (ether and chloroform), while others preferred application of electricity. Four British 'forward psychiatric units' were set up in 1917. Hospitals for shell shocked soldiers were also established in Britain, including (for officers) Craiglockhart War Hospi

Current psychiatric models, while clinically valuable, remain limited in their ability to account for the complexity, variability, and context dependence of mental disorders. Converging evidence from neuroscience, complexity science, and psychedelic research suggests that psychiatric symptoms may be better understood as stable patterns of organization within dynamic, multilevel systems rather than as outputs of isolated biological dysfunction. This paper proposes a systems-based framework in which therapeutic change is conceptualized as a phased process of perturbation, reorganization, and con

Currently, in psychiatry, lithium is a drug of choice as a mood stabilizer in the maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder for the prevention of manic and depressive recurrences. The second most important psychiatric use of lithium is probably increasing the efficacy of antidepressants in treatment-resistant depression. In addition to its mood-stabilizing properties, lithium exerts antisuicidal, antiviral, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective effects. The goal of the review is to describe the experimental and clinical studies on the last three properties of lithium. Antiviral effects of lith

Over the past several years, the number of first-time users of methamphetamine considerably increased within the Free State of Saxony. This number also, and especially, includes women of child-bearing age and young mothers. A supportive intervention aimed at reducing the effects of drug abuse should begin in a timely way - during pregnancy at latest, but better before it. To develop an optimal care protocol for both the mother and her child, more knowledge regarding the personal conditions of the women as well as the specific features of later child development after prenatal methamphetamine e

OBJECTIVES: Early intervention and preventive strategies have become major targets of research and service development in psychiatry over the last few years. Compared to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD) has received limited attention in this regard. In this paper, we review the available literature in order to explore the public health significance of BD and the extent to which this may justify the development of early intervention strategies for this disorder.
METHODS: The main computerized psychiatric literature databases were accessed. This included Medline and PsychInfo, using the fol
