Acetazolamide-augmented BOLD MRI to Assess Whole-Brain Cerebrovascular Reactivity in Chronic Steno-occlusive Disease Using Principal Component Analysis.

Background Exhaustion of cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) portends increased stroke risk. Acetazolamide-augmented blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) MRI has been used to estimate CVR, but low signal-to-noise conditions relegate its use to terminal CVR (CVRend) measurements that neglect dynamic features of CVR. Purpose To demonstrate comprehensive characterization of acetazolamide-augmented BOLD MRI response in chronic steno-occlusive disease using a computational framework to precondition signal time courses for dynamic whole-brain CVR analysis. Materials and Methods This study focused o

A Principal Component Analysis Approach to Estimate the Disability Status for Patients with Multiple Sclerosis Using Japanese Claims Data.

IntroductionClaims databases are preferred for research on multiple sclerosis (MS) as this condition is characterized by low prevalence and long disease course. However, Japanese claims databases contain no information on disease severity or disability status of MS. Here, we aimed to explore the possibility of utilizing a principal component analysis (PCA) to estimate MS severity using a Japanese claims database.MethodsAn MS severity score was developed using a PCA. Factors related to functional systems for Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and higher disease severity (74 diagnoses, 68 d

Selective Detection of Target Volatile Organic Compounds in Contaminated Humid Air Using a Sensor Array with Principal Component Analysis.

We investigated selective detection of the target volatile organic compounds (VOCs) nonanal, n-decane, and acetoin for lung cancer-related VOCs, and acetone and methyl i-butyl ketone for diabetes-related VOCs, in humid air with simulated VOC contamination (total concentration: 300 μg/m³). We used six "grain boundary-response type" sensors, including four commercially available sensors (TGS 2600, 2610, 2610, and 2620) and two Pt, Pd, and Au-loaded SnO₂ sensors (Pt, Pd, Au/SnO₂), and two "bulk-response type" sensors, including Zr-doped CeO₂ (CeZr10), i.e., eight sensors in total. We then analyze

Application of principal component analysis-multivariate adaptive regression splines for the simultaneous spectrofluorimetric determination of dialkyltins in micellar media.

A new multicomponent analysis method, based on principal component analysis-multivariate adaptive regression splines (PC-MARS) is proposed for the determination of dialkyltin compounds. In Tween-20 micellar media, dimethyl and dibutyltin react with morin to give fluorescent complexes with the maximum emission peaks at 527 and 520nm, respectively. The spectrofluorimetric matrix data, before building the MARS models, were subjected to principal component analysis and decomposed to PC scores as starting points for the MARS algorithm. The algorithm classifies the calibration data into several grou

Gene expression profiling with principal component analysis depicts the biological continuum from essential thrombocythemia over polycythemia vera to myelofibrosis.

The recent discovery of the Janus activating kinase 2 V617F mutation in most patients with polycythemia vera (PV) and half of those with essential thrombocythemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (PMF) has favored the hypothesis of a biological continuum from ET over PV to PMF. We performed gene expression profiling of whole blood from control subjects (n = 21) and patients with ET (n = 19), PV (n = 41), and PMF (n = 9) using DNA microarrays. Applying an unsupervised method, principal component analysis, to search for patterns in the data, we demonstrated a separation of the four groups with bio

Temporal dynamic of cognitive decline in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients: a multimodal biomarker analysis using event-based modal and principal component analysis.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an important risk factor for cognitive impairment. Prior research has shown cognitive deficits and neural alterations across multiple domains in T2DM patients. However, the sequential dynamics of cognitive decline in this population remain poorly understood. This study employs an integrative approach combining Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the Event-Based Model (EBM) to identify the temporal sequence of cognitive changes and underlying neural mechanisms in T2DM. METHODS: This study assessed 119 T2DM patients and 87 healthy controls with

Lower-limb muscle activation patterns during the taekwondo roundhouse kick in elite and youth athletes: a functional principal component analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The taekwondo roundhouse kick is a fundamental and performance-critical technique that requires precise lower-limb muscle coordination. However, previous studies have mainly focused on discrete electromyographic variables, providing limited insight into waveform-level variations across the kicking cycle, particularly between athletes of different age and training levels. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate lower-limb surface electromyographic (sEMG) waveform differences during the roundhouse kick between elite and youth taekwondo athletes using functional principal component

The Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scales-21: Principal component analysis and evaluation of abbreviated versions in young adults with temporomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: The Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) contain three subscales measuring depression, anxiety, and stress. Several abbreviated DASS-21 versions have been developed, demonstrating better clinical utility and measurement properties than the original instrument. This study explored the factor structure of various abbreviated DASS-21 versions and identified/validated the optimal one for assessing young adults with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). METHODS: A total of 974 university-attending young adults were recruited in two waves (wave 1: 519; wave 2: 455). Demographic

What influences patients' opinion of remission and low disease activity in psoriatic arthritis? Principal component analysis of an international study.

OBJECTIVE: In PsA, the treatment objective is remission or low disease activity (LDA), but patients' perception of remission is poorly studied. This analysis aimed to identify factors associated with patient-defined remission. METHODS: This analysis uses ReFlaP data, an international PsA study, with remission defined as 'At this time, is your psoriatic arthritis in remission, if this means: you feel your disease is as good as gone?'. Variables associated with, first, patient-defined remission and, second, LDA were identified using multivariable logistic regression and principal component anal

Variation trends and principal component analysis of nitrogen oxide emissions from motor vehicles in Wuhan City from 2012 to 2017.

In addition to fine particulate matter and oxysulfides, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by motor vehicles are among the most important pollutants affecting air quality and public health in those urban areas where centralized heating and chemical industry absent. We utilized correlation analysis (pearson correlation coefficient and spearman correlation coefficient) and principal component analysis (PCA) to identify the variation trends and main causes of NOx emissions from motor vehicles in Wuhan City. We considered the total number of motor vehicles (TN), ratios of motor vehicles of different em

The Effect of Manual Wheelchair Propulsion Speed on Users' Shoulder Muscle Coordination Patterns in Time-Frequency and Principal Component Analysis.

A rehabilitation program for wheelchair users should be based on a thorough understanding of shoulder muscle coordination patterns. The objective of the study was to quantify the extent to which the muscle electromyographic (EMG) patterns vary with propulsion speed. A total of 11 wheelchair-dependent participants with a diagnosis of spina bifida or T6-T12 spinal cord injury volunteered for the study. Each participant performed a series of wheelchair propulsion bouts at 1m/s, 1.3 m/s, and 1.6m/s. EMG signals of 8 shoulder muscles as well as the physiological and kinetic variables were recorded.
