Additive manufacturing, framed within the Industry 4.0. concept, is one of the processes that has witnessed greater development in the last years. Within this subject fused deposition modelling (FDM) printing technology is mainly dedicated to polymers and capable of providing components or elements of sufficient quality for different sectors. However, due to the process there can be a series of surface irregularities, which although they do not affect the required dimensional tolerances, they can cause problems in the useful life of the printed object in its interactions with the environment,

BACKGROUND: The Nuss procedure is a minimally invasive surgery for pectus excavatum. Success of the Nuss procedure is dependent on a previously bent pectus bar that is shaped to the desired curvature of the chest wall. Traditionally, the size and curvature of the metallic pectus bar are determined by trial and error. Herein, we introduce a novel design method for the metallic pectus bar to optimize the bar curvature and outcome after the Nuss procedure.
METHODS: From August 2016 through March 2017, 10 consecutive patients with pectus excavatum underwent the three-dimensional (3D) printed mode

Organic electronics often require molecular alignment to facilitate efficient charge transport. However, existing alignment methods (e.g., magnetic alignment, dielectrophoresis, spin coating, and doctor blading) are energy-intensive, incompatible with water-based materials, or wasteful. Here, we demonstrate that extrusion-based 3D printing induces significant shear alignment in aqueous perylene bisimide (PBI) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blends, eliminating the need for external fields or incompatible coating techniques. Upon drying, the resultant xerogels retain this alignment, yielding hom

Three-dimensional (3D) in vitro tumor models are critical for studying transport-limited drug efficacy in solid tumors; however, many existing platforms are technically complex and remain difficult to access. Stacked paper-based tumor models ("cells-in-gel-in-paper", CiGiP) address this challenge by enabling formation of diffusion-limited microenvironments while allowing direct access to cells from distinct tissue depths. Nevertheless, current CiGiP implementations rely on wax or hydrophobic barrier patterning of paper, which has become increasingly inaccessible. Here, we present a wax-printin

The development of durable efficient water repellent textiles without perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is critical for sustainability. However, alternative alkyl-based coating solutions are generally less efficient. Here, we show how the hydrophobicity of a typical biobased fluorine-free coating (Lamoral A5) can be boosted by the multiscale design of the topographic spectrum of polyester fabrics from the submicrometer to the millimeter range. Using nanogravure printing, we fabricated mechanically robust textiles exhibiting nanopillared arrays superimposed on the intrinsic f

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are highly attractive for 4D printing due to their ability to undergo large, rapid, and reversible shape changes in response to external stimuli. While direct ink writing (DIW) enables mesogen alignment during extrusion, it remains limited in resolution and geometric complexity. In contrast, digital light processing (DLP) offers fast, high-resolution fabrication of complex architectures but lacks an intrinsic mechanism for aligning mesogens, which prevents reversible actuation. Here, we present a scalable and versatile strategy for DLP 4D printing of LCEs, based

Volumetric additive manufacturing has emerged as a promising technique for the flexible production of complex structures, with diverse applications in engineering, photonics and biology1,2. However, present methods still face a trade-off between resolution and volumetric build rate, restricting efficient and flexible production of high-resolution 3D structures. Here we propose a method, called digital incoherent synthesis of holographic light fields (DISH), to generate high-resolution 3D light distributions through continuous multi-angle projections with a high-speed rotating periscope without

Fabricating conductive circuits on complex curved surfaces remains a significant challenge for conformal electronics, particularly for soft and additively manufactured polymer substrates. We report a robust, conformal GOPS-assisted transfer-printing strategy for integrating inkjet-printed PEDOT:PSS patterns onto traditionally hard-to-print and non-planar surfaces. In this approach, conductive features are first defined on a planar polyimide donor substrate and subsequently transferred to the target substrate. The incorporation of (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GOPS) into PEDOT:PSS faci

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading global cause of mortality, with rising needs for vascular grafts. As 3D printing becomes increasingly integrated into tissue engineering, research and development aimed at producing 3D-printed vascular grafts has seen a marked increase. Preparing vascular grafts with high requirements ensures that they possess the necessary mechanical properties and biological properties for successful implantation, which is a crucial indicator of quality and clinical applicability in 3D-printed vascular grafts. In addition, rapid endothelialization, antithrombotic prope

Partitioning cells in open nanowells permits high confidence in single cell occupancy and enables flexibility in the development of different molecular assays. A challenge for this approach however is to print cells sufficiently quickly to enable experiments of adequate statistical power in a reasonable time. To address this, we developed a single cell dispensing instrument leveraging inkjet technology with continuous real-time optical feedback and machine learning algorithms for high-throughput single cell isolation. The Isolatrix enables rapid partitioning of cells into open substrates such

Post-extrusion flow dynamics of soft matter are governed by their elasto-viscoplastic (EVP) rheological properties, which influence filament stability, die swelling, and shape fidelity in extrusion-based 3D printing. Achieving precision and control in printed structures requires optimizing yield stress, viscoelasticity, and extrusion pressure to minimize excessive die swelling and material spreading, which can lead to unstable extrusion and poor print fidelity. We investigate Carbopol-polyethylene oxide (PEO) blends as model EVP fluids, systematically varying their composition to assess die sw

Hydrogels are an important class of biomaterials that permit cells to be cultured and studied within engineered microenvironments of user-defined physical and chemical properties. Though conventional 3D extrusion and stereolithographic (SLA) printing readily enable homogeneous and multimaterial hydrogels to be formed with specific macroscopic geometries, strategies that further afford spatiotemporal customization of the underlying gel physicochemistry in a non-discrete manner would be profoundly useful toward recapitulating the complexity of native tissue in vitro. Here, we demonstrate that gr

Strain-stiffening hydrogels, which mimic the nonlinear mechanical behavior of biological tissues such as skin, arteries, and cartilage, hold transformative potential for biomedical applications. This study introduces immersion phase separation (IPS) 3-dimensional (3D) printing, an innovative technique that enables the one-step fabrication of strain-stiffening hydrogel scaffolds with intricate, hierarchical architectures. This technique addresses the long-standing challenge of balancing structural complexity and intrinsic mechanoresponsive behavior in traditional hydrogel fabrication methods. B

The musculoskeletal system relies on critical tissue interfaces for its function; however, these interfaces are often compromised by injuries and diseases. Restoration of these interfaces is complex by nature which renders traditional treatments inadequate. An emerging solution is three-dimensional printing, which allows for precise fabrication of biomimetic scaffolds to enhance tissue regeneration. This review summarizes the use of 3D printing in creating scaffolds for musculoskeletal interfaces, mainly focusing on advanced techniques such as multi-material printing, bioprinting, and 4D print
