Speech-language habilitation of hearing-impaired children: basis for assessment and training.

Spoken language assessment and training for profoundly deaf children should be based on normal developmental sequences. However, existing models of normal speech/language development have not been able to account for shifts from one developmental level to another. The implications of more recent theories of the development of expressive communication are reviewed. The concept of levels of spoken language development is reevaluated in terms of these theories. It is proposed that the developmental landmarks that initiate each level are a product of changes with growth in underlying subsystems. S

Addressing Future Changes in Communication Using Hypothetical Scenarios With People With Primary Progressive Aphasia and Care Partners: A Conversation Analytic Study.

BACKGROUND: People with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) will experience a decline in language and cognitive function, and behavioural changes are not uncommon. Decline in everyday skills has been reported and becomes more pronounced over time. Previous research has shown that people with PPA and their care partners (CPs) want to address future changes. Addressing future changes and future planning is highlighted in guidelines, such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence's (NICE) guidelines on Decision-making and mental capacity. The Better Conversations with PPA is a manual

Response to rehabilitation of children and adolescents with epilepsy.

One hundred fifty-six children and adolescents with epilepsy from six Italian rehabilitation units were retrospectively enrolled to define the proportion of patients with epileptogenic developmental disorders who benefit from comprehensive rehabilitation programs and to identify factors predicting treatment response. The rehabilitation programs were classified as neuromotor, psychomotor, and speech and language. For each program, the response was coded as present or absent according to the caring physician's judgment. Selected demographic and clinical variables were correlated to treatment res

Fixation-related potentials reveal that confusing program code elicits a late frontal positivity.

As software pervades more and more areas of our professional and personal lives, there is an ever-increasing need to maintain software and for programmers to efficiently write and understand program code. In the first study of its kind, we analyze fixation-related potentials (FRPs) to explore the online processing of program code patterns that are confusing to programmers, but not to the computer (so-called atoms of confusion), and their underlying neurocognitive mechanisms in an ecologically valid setting. Relative to clean counterparts in program code without an atom of confusion, confusing

An evaluation of neuropsychological rehabilitation for patients with high spinal cord injuries and brain damage.

This article describes a program of neuropsychological rehabilitation for high cervical SCI patients with psycho-organic syndrome. Traumatic injury to the cervical spine is frequently accompanied by organic damage to the brain, either caused by the same accident that injured the spine or resulting from secondary causes. The result of concomitant brain damage in cervical SCI patients is psycho-organic syndrome, which consists of both cognitive (higher level language functioning, disturbances in memory, language, attention, and thinking) and personality components (mood and behavioral disorders)

Effectiveness of 1:1 speech and language therapy for older children with (developmental) language disorder.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of the effectiveness of therapy for older children with (developmental) language disorder (DLD), and particularly those with receptive language impairments, is very limited. The few existing studies have focused on particular target areas, but none has looked at a whole area of a service. AIMS: To establish whether for students with (developmental) language disorder attending a specialist school, 1:1 intervention with an SLT during one school term improves performance on targeted areas, compared with untreated control areas. Also, to investigate whether gender, receptive

Addressing the needs for cultural adaptation of DARE-keepin' it REAL among Brazilian students: strategies to improve implementation.

BACKGROUND: The widely implemented prevention program in Brazil, PROERD (a translated version of the DARE-kiR program), showed no evidence of effect in preventing drug use in a recent trial. The lack of cultural adaptation and instructors' deviations from the curriculum were identified as potential reasons for its ineffectiveness. This study aims to identify points of inadequacy of the PROERD program for the Brazilian culture, suggesting strategies for revising the curriculum to improve implementation. METHODS: We triangulated data obtained from three different groups of study participants: s

Collaborative speech and language services for students with learning disabilities.

Fueled by educational reforms such as the Regular Education Initiative, the inclusion movement, and Goals 2000, speech and language pathologists (SLPs) have explored the use of collaborative consultation in providing integrated service delivery. The implications of classroom-based services are discussed, along with models that have been adopted by SLPs, learning disabilities specialists (LDSs), and classroom teachers. The characteristics of students served, and the areas of speech and language (i.e., language, articulation, fluency, voice) targeted in the classroom, are reviewed. Ways in which

Issues to consider in the evaluation of speech and language therapy for preschool children.

This paper reviews some of the methodological issues involved in the design of a randomized controlled trial currently underway in Bristol. The trial compares the progress of preschool children randomly allocated to a 'watching-waiting' control group with the experimental group who have immediate access to therapy. This paper reviews a number of relevant studies, which have either followed up preschool children with early language delays or have investigated the effects of therapy with this age group. The basic design of the trial is outlined along with a discussion of the sample, the measurem

Interventions for reading difficulties: a comparison of response to intervention by ELL and EFL struggling readers.

This article explores whether struggling readers from different primary language backgrounds differ in response to phonologically based remediation. Following random assignment to one of three reading interventions or to a special education reading control program, reading and reading-related outcomes of 166 struggling readers were assessed before, during, and following 105 intervention hours. Struggling readers met criteria for reading disability, were below average in oral language and verbal skills, and varied in English as a first language (EFL) versus English-language learner (ELL) status

Symbol vocabulary and the focus of conversations: augmenting language development for youth with mental retardation.

Communication devices designed to augment the language development of individuals with severe cognitive disabilities and little or no functional speech typically contain primarily nouns because they seem easiest to acquire and evaluate. In this study, the effect of a more diverse vocabulary was assessed. Systematic observations of the use of computerized speech-output devices by 12 youth with moderate or severe mental retardation and severe spoken language disability and by their partners were made over a 2-year period. Social-regulative symbols (e.g., "please," "I'm finished") were used as so

Core outcomes for speech-language services in Ontario schools: a group concept mapping study and guiding framework.

BACKGROUND: Establishing the most important outcomes for school-based speech-language therapy is essential to guide future research and program evaluation for these services. Many health disciplines have developed core outcomes sets (COS) for this purpose. A COS encompasses the most important outcomes for particular health services as identified by appropriate interested parties. These interested parties usually represent health care providers and those with the health condition. In this paper, we report the development of a guiding framework for a COS for speech-language therapy services in s

Video feedback for families of hearing impaired children.

In order to improve speech-language development in children with hearing impairment, in addition to speech-language therapy, the family should be the modifying agent for a satisfactory therapeutic response. Studies that analyze the effectiveness of speech-language pathology (SLP) intervention programs through video feedback are important, given the positive effects of this tool on the modification of behaviors with families of children with disabilities. Therefore, it is believed that video feedback interventions contribute improve the communicative interactions between the families and childr

Using telepractice for language sampling during COVID-19 pandemic: A scoping review.

IntroductionLanguage sampling is a widely used means of language assessment; it is based on the collection and transcription of a child's language production in various communicative contexts. The need for social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic impacted language sampling and speech and language therapy services in general. The in-person assessment became extremely challenging leading to the immediate increased use of telepractice in speech and language therapy. This scoping review aimed to identify the use of telepractice for language sampling in speech and language therapy during the

Why we should consider pragmatics when planning treatment for children who stutter.

Pragmatics, the use of language in context, has been investigated only recently in the language used by children who stutter (CWS). Historically researchers compared the length and complexity of the syntactic constructions produced by these children with those of children who do not stutter (CWNS) and generally found the CWS to be relatively deficient. More recently, some investigators have begun to address how the language and fluency of CWS are influenced in different communicative settings. This article describes several findings concerning the pragmatic competencies of CWS set against the

Evaluating the ability of generative AI to standardize TNM staging data in lung cancer.

This study evaluates the ability of generative artificial intelligence (AI) models to standardize tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging data in lung cancer. It assesses how well two large language models, ChatGPT and Gemini, convert information from historical editions of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system into the eighth edition. ChatGPT and Gemini were applied to retrospectively standardize TNM staging across multiple AJCC editions using lung cancer data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results cancer registry. We used a zero-shot prompting method, employi

Design and implementation of the mobility assessment tool: software description.

BACKGROUND: In previous work, we described the development of an 81-item video-animated tool for assessing mobility. In response to criticism levied during a pilot study of this tool, we sought to develop a new version built upon a flexible framework for designing and administering the instrument. RESULTS: Rather than constructing a self-contained software application with a hard-coded instrument, we designed an XML schema capable of describing a variety of psychometric instruments. The new version of our video-animated assessment tool was then defined fully within the context of a compliant
