Separation experiences: a new look at an old topic.

Research findings on the effects of separation are reviewed. Children of working mothers develop as well as those whose mothers remain at home. The effects of day care for very young children depend very much on the quality of care provided. Admission to hospital is stressful for preschool children through separation from the family, lack of opportunity to form new attachments, a strange environment, and disturbed parent-child relationships on return home; recurrent hospital admissions may have long-term sequelae, especially in children under chronic stress. An institutional upbringing need no

Grief, depression and psychotic-like experiences among bereaved college students: the predictive role of attitudes towards death.

Background: Bereavement may lead to heterogeneous psychological responses, including prolonged grief disorder (PGD), depression, and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). Individuals' attitudes toward death may play a significant role in bereavement adjustment. Objective: This study aimed to identify latent subgroups of bereaved Chinese college students based on their symptom endorsement of PGD, depression, and PLEs, and to examine the predictive role of five specific death attitudes - fear of death, death avoidance, neutral acceptance, approach acceptance, and escape acceptance - on class members

The Role of Emotion Regulation Difficulties and Intrusive and Deliberate Rumination in the Association Between Insecure Attachment and Prolonged Grief.

This study investigated the role of emotion regulation difficulties and intrusive/deliberate rumination in the relationship between insecure attachment and prolonged grief symptoms. A total sample of 342 bereaved participants was included in the study. Both anxious and avoidant attachment styles were found to be associated with prolonged grief symptoms, with an avoidant attachment showing a stronger effect. Emotion regulation difficulties and rumination mediated the relationships between attachment styles and prolonged grief symptoms, supporting the proposed mediation model. The study identifi

[Trauma and stressor-related disorders: diagnostic conceptualization in DSM-5].

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM-5) includes a distinct diagnostic group of trauma and stressor-related disorders that has been set apart from anxiety disorders. From a perspective of adult psychiatry this new disorder category includes posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), acute stress disorder (ASD), and adjustment disorders. The PTSD is based on narrower trauma criteria that focus on acute life-threatening situations, serious injury, or sexual violence by way of direct confrontation, witnessing or indirect confrontation. Indirect confrontation, however, is re

The Safety and Efficacy of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies for Older Adults: Knowns and Unknowns.

Psychedelics and related compounds have shown efficacy for the treatment of a variety of conditions that are prevalent among older adults, including mood disorders, the psychological distress associated with a serious medical illness, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and prolonged grief disorder. Psychedelics also have properties that could help provide therapeutic benefits for patients with dementing disorders, as well as promoting personal growth among healthy older adults. This article focuses on psilocybin, a classic psychedelic, and MDMA, a substituted amphetamine with properties si

Psychiatric disorders among disaster bereaved: an interview study of individuals directly or not directly exposed to the 2004 tsunami.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the long-term mental health consequences of disaster losses in bereaved, either exposed to the disaster themselves or not. This study examined the prevalence and predictors of mental disorders and psychological distress in bereaved individuals either directly or not directly exposed to the 2004 tsunami disaster. METHOD: A cross-sectional study of 111 bereaved Norwegians (32 directly and 79 not directly exposed) was conducted 2 years postdisaster. We used a face-to-face structured clinical interview to diagnose current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Is adult-onset separation anxiety disorder a trauma-stress-related disorder? A preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: The DSM-5 recognized that the separation anxiety disorder (SEPAD) may span the entire life course or have an adult-onset. Epidemiological data indicated a 23%-69% prevalence of SEPAD in clinical settings and a high comorbidity with both prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some authors hypothesize that while life threat represents the key trigger of PTSD, disruptions or threats to interpersonal bonds lead to PGD and SEPAD. This study aims to test the hypothesis that adult-onset SEPAD might be a trauma-related disorder, triggered by events threat

Fruits of trauma? Posttraumatic growth among suicide-bereaved parents.

BACKGROUND: While there is evidence that suicide-bereaved individuals may be at higher risk for trauma-related outcomes, such as posttraumatic stress disorder or prolonged grief, positive psychology suggests that suicide bereavement may also promote personal growth within the confines of distress characterized as posttraumatic growth (PTG). AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate PTG and what variables, such as reflective rumination, resilience, personality variables, and mood states, contribute to PTG among suicide-bereaved parents. METHOD: Online survey methods were employed using a

Living with the Dead: Mad or Bad? Five paradigmatic cases of unprocessed grief.

The death of a loved one is an event with the highest imbalance for all individuals. Although it is typically a painful but normal process, in specific vulnerable subjects, it may evolve into maladaptive trajectories, culminating in extreme behaviors that became the objective of interdisciplinary studies. This paper analyzed five cases focused on the continuation of cohabitation between survivors and corpse. This unconventional behavior draws its origins from the co-presence of three pathological elements: psychiatric disorders, fragile personality structures, and dysfunctional family systems.

A public health model for bereavement care: learnings from COVID-19 bereavement experiences in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted bereavement care, posing risks of long-term physical and mental health consequences. To ensure the lived experience was captured during this challenging time, a national survey was conducted to examine the Irish population's experiences of dying, death, and bereavement during the pandemic. METHODS: A mixed-methods survey study was conducted between November 2021 and February 2022. Using purposive sampling, a sample of adults completed a 38-question survey. Of the 2,259 participants who completed the survey, 1,223 reported one or more bereav

Unconfirmed death as a predictor of psychological morbidity in family members of disappeared persons.

BACKGROUND: The 2004 tsunami, the civil conflict until 2009 and the youth insurrection in the late 1980s in Sri Lanka resulted in many persons being classified as 'missing' as they disappeared and were unaccounted for. Our aim was to compare the prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD) and prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in families of disappeared individuals, who eventually received the mortal remains and those who did not. METHOD: An ethically approved cross sectional study was conducted in a purposively selected sample after informed consent. Information on the circumstances of the fam

Effectiveness of psychotherapy: Synthesis of a "meta-analytic research domain" across world regions and 12 mental health problems.

The scientific output generated in psychology has surged in recent decades, including the number of studies investigating psychological treatments. To keep track of all this evidence, we developed the "Metapsy" meta-analytic research domain: a comprehensive system of open databases and tailored software that allows for rapid evidence generation. We leverage this novel infrastructure to summarize the effect of psychological treatment across 12 mental health problems and trace back the global expansion of psychotherapy research over the past 50 years. Including 1,029 studies with 85,952 patients

Rumination and implicit avoidance following bereavement: an approach avoidance task investigation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rumination, a risk factor in adjustment to bereavement, has often been considered a confrontation process. However, building on research on worry in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and rumination in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), researchers recently developed the Rumination as Avoidance Hypothesis (RAH), which states that rumination after bereavement serves to avoid the reality of the loss. In the present study, RAH was tested by investigating if rumination is associated with implicit loss avoidance. METHODS: An Approach Avoidance Task (AAT) was used to

Change Patterns of Posttraumatic and Grief Disorders and Their Somatic Variables in Ongoing Trauma.

IMPORTANCE: This study provides insight into change patterns of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD (CPTSD), and prolonged grief disorder (PGD) under conditions of continuous trauma. Clarification of how these disorders are associated with somatization and pain is essential for the assessment and development of integrated care models for continuous trauma-exposed populations. OBJECTIVE: To examine longitudinal change patterns of PTSD, CPTSD, and PGD and assess their associations with somatization and pain. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A population-based cohort study was

Revalidation of Adjustment Disorder-New Module-4 screening of adjustment disorder in a non-clinical sample: Psychometric reevaluation and correlates with other ICD-11 mental disorders.

In line with the new conceptualization of adjustment disorder (AjD) in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), a new 20-item self-report questionnaire was developed and validated - the Adjustment Disorder-New Module (ADNM). However, such a long research tool has the potential to become problematic for use in epidemiological and clinical settings. Therefore, an ultra-brief measure for AjD (ADNM-4) was established and validated in a recent study conducted with a representative national sample. The aim of the present study was to revalidate the ultra-brief ADNM
