Blockade of secondary lymphoid tissue chemokine exacerbates Propionibacterium acnes-induced acute lung inflammation.

Chemokine-chemokine receptor interaction plays an essential role in leukocyte/dendritic cell (DC) trafficking in inflammation and immune responses. We investigated the pathophysiological roles of secondary lymphoid tissue chemokine (SLC; CCL21) and macrophage inflammatory protein-2 (MIP-2) in the development of acute pulmonary inflammation induced by an intratracheal injection of Propionibacterium acnes in mice. Immunohistochemical studies revealed that SLC was constitutively expressed in the peribronchial areas and perivascular lymphatics in normal mice. MIP-2-positive cells were observed in

Propionibacterium acnes immunotherapy in chronic recurrent canine pyoderma. An adjunct to antibiotic therapy.

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, dogs with chronic recurrent pyoderma were treated with antibiotics plus intravenous injections of either Propionibacterium acnes or placebo. Responses (an increase, decrease, or clearing of lesions) were measured and evaluated statistically. Eighty percent (12 of 15) of the dogs treated with antibiotics and P acnes compared with 38% (five of 13) of the dogs treated with antibiotics and placebo responded with significant improvement or complete remission of lesions at the end of the 12-week treatment schedule (P less than 0.05).

Understanding the role of Propionibacterium acnes in acne vulgaris: The critical importance of skin sampling methodologies.

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition classified by the Global Burden of Disease Study as the eighth most prevalent disease worldwide. The pathophysiology of the condition has been extensively studied, with an increase in sebum production, abnormal keratinization of the pilosebaceous follicle, and an inflammatory immune response all implicated in its etiology. One of the most disputed points, however, is the role of the gram-positive anaerobic bacterium Propionibacterium acnes in the development of acne, particularly when this organism is also found in normal sebaceous follicl

Recent progress in the research about Propionibacterium acnes strain diversity and acne: pathogen or bystander?

Recent progress has steadily reported the existence of the diverse strains of Propionibacterium acnes, and these studies have contributed to the elucidation of their contradictory roles between normal commensals and pathogens. In this review, the authors aimed to provide an update on the recent understanding of research about P. acnes strain diversity and acne, analyzing the potential implications for clinical applications. Before the era of genomic research, P. acnes was known to be distinguished based on serological agglutination tests, cell wall sugar analysis, or fermentation traits. Since

Propionibacterium acnes, an emerging pathogen: from acne to implant-infections, from phylotype to resistance.

Propionibacterium acnes colonizes the lipid-rich sebaceous glands of the skin. This preferential anaerobic bacterium is easily identified if cultures are prolonged. It is involved in the inflammation process of acne, but until recently, it was neglected in other clinical presentations. Despite a reported low virulence, the new genomic, transcriptomic, and phylogenetic studies have allowed better understanding of this pathogen's importance that causes many chronic and recurrent infections, including orthopedic and cardiac prosthetic, and breast or eye implant-infections. These infections, facil

Biopolymer scaffolds for use in delivering antimicrobial sophorolipids to the acne-causing bacterium Propionibacterium acnes.

Sophorolipids (SLs) are known to possess antimicrobial properties towards many species (particularly Gram-positive, or Gram(+)) of bacteria. However, these properties can only be exerted if the SLs can be introduced to the bacterial cells in an acceptable manner. Propionibacterium acnes is the common bacterial cause of acne. It is a Gram(+) facultative anaerobe that is susceptible to the antimicrobial effects of SLs. In this study we demonstrated that different biopolymer matrices could be used to produce SL composite films that exert various antimicrobial efficiencies against P. acnes. Increa

In vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of Propionibacterium acnes isolated from acne patients in northern Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobials are essential in acne therapy. In the last decades, Propionibacterium acnes has become resistant to different antibiotics. OBJECTIVE: To determine antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of P. acnes to frequently used drugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cutaneous lesion samples were obtained from 50 patients with acne vulgaris, which were cultured in anaerobic media to demonstrate the presence of P. acnes. After that, antimicrobial susceptibility tests to tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline, erythromycin, azithromycin, clindamycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (SXT) an

CRISPR/cas loci of type II Propionibacterium acnes confer immunity against acquisition of mobile elements present in type I P. acnes.

Propionibacterium acnes is a skin commensal that occasionally acts as an opportunistic pathogen. The population structure of this species shows three main lineages (I-III). While type I strains are mainly associated with sebaceous follicles of human skin and inflammatory acne, types II and III strains are more often associated with deep tissue infections. We investigated the occurrence and distribution of the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) in P. acnes, assessed their immunological memory, and addressed the question if such a system could account for type-spe

Anti-Bacterial Activity of Green Synthesised Silver and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles against Propionibacterium acnes.

Propionibacterium acnes plays a critical role in the development of acne vulgaris. There has been a rise in the number of patients carrying P. acnes strains that are resistant to antibiotics. Thus, alternative anti-microbial agents are required. Zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs) and silver (Ag-NPs) nanoparticles can be used against several antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The impact of Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs against two clinical strains of P. acnes, P1 and P2, and a reference strain, NCTC747, were investigated in this research. A chemical approach for the green synthesis of Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs from Peganum harmal

Proteomic Analysis of the Antibacterial Effect of Improved Dian Dao San against Propionibacterium acnes.

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a major pathogen of acne vulgaris. The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compound prescription, Dian Dao San (DDS), is effective for treating P. acnes. Previous clinical work by our team demonstrated that improved Dian Dao San (IDDS) has better antibacterial effects. However, the mechanism of IDDS inhibition of P. acnes is still unknown. Hence, the isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) technology was applied to explore the antibacterial mechanism of IDDS against P. acnes. Our results suggested that the antibacterial mechanism of IDD

Modification of Anti-acne Bawang Dayak (Eleutherine bulbosa (Mill.)Urb.) Cream to Propionibacterium acnes.

Bawang dayak is one of the traditional medicines in Central Kalimantan, used to treat acne vulgaris. Previous research reported that a cream made with bawang dayak extract's active ingredient could inhibit Propionibacterium acnes' growth. However, bawang dayak has a pungent odor that causes discomfort, where the cream separates after 3 days of storage, which decreases its potency. This study aims to improve the quality of the anti-acne cream formulation of bawang dayak extract from previous studies with the addition of cinnamon, honey, and peppermint. The modified formula of bawang dayak extra

Surfactin inhibits the growth of Propionibacterium acnes by destroying the cell wall and membrane.

Propionibacterium acnes plays a major role in acne vulgaris. In the pre-experiment, the growth of P. acnes was inhibited effectively using surfactin; however, the antibacterial mechanism has not been described. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate antibacterial activity and analyse the mechanism of surfactin against P. acnes. Minimum inhibitory concentration, time-killing kinetics and scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate the activity of surfactin against P. acnes, which showed that 128 μg ml-1 effectively inhibited growth. Cell wall permeability was evaluated by detec

Initial Presentation of Cutibacterium (Formerly Propionibacterium) acnes Endophthalmitis Twenty-One Years After Cataract Surgery.

The authors report a case of an 81-year-old female who presented with sudden onset of light perception vision and intraocular inflammation. After several months of continuing symptoms despite antibiotics, an aqueous tap culture grew Cutibacterium acnes. The patient had cataract surgery 21 years prior, and had no intervening trauma, intraocular procedure, or endogenous source. The presumed diagnosis was C. acnes endophthalmitis with significantly delayed onset. Capsulectomy and intraocular lens removal resolved the patient's symptoms. In rare cases, C. acnes endophthalmitis may present as recur

Low-dose blue light irradiation enhances the antimicrobial activities of curcumin against Propionibacterium acnes.

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is an opportunistic infection in human skin that causes acne vulgaris. Antibiotic agents provide the effective eradication of microbes until the development of drug-resistant microbes. Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is a non-antibiotic therapy for microbial eradication. In this study, the visible blue light (BL, λmax = 462 nm) was used to enhance the antimicrobial activities of curcumin, a natural phenolic compound. Individual exposure to curcumin or BL irradiation does not generate cytotoxicity on P. acnes. The viability of P. acnes was decreased significan
