Coordinated locomotion depends not only on motor programs but also on the sensory feedback that refines them. Proprioceptive sensory neurons (pSNs) modulate motor circuits through direct synapses, yet their role in shaping spinal cord circuits has remained unclear. Here, we uncover an essential function for pSNs in organizing Clarke's column (CC) neurons, a major spinocerebellar population. Although CC neurons are born early in embryogenesis, their distinctive columnar architecture emerges postnatally and depends on direct pSN input. Genetic ablation of pSNs reduces the number of CC neurons an

The monosynaptic Ia afferent pathway provides direct and strong excitatory drive to spinal motoneurons (MNs), forming a critical substrate for reflex modulation, intermuscular coordination, and motor performance. Despite its central role in sensorimotor control, it has remained unclear how different forms of physical training reshape the Ia input to MNs. In this review, we summarize recent intracellular studies in rats revealing a pattern of MN-type specific plasticity. Whole‑body vibration and progressive weight‑lifting training, both characterized by the recruitment of high‑threshold motor u

Due to their compliant mechanics, many soft and flexible robots are well-suited to operate in confined spaces that challenge traditional legged and wheeled robots. In particular, undulatory and peristaltic robots excel in enclosed tunnels and pipes, as their locomotion methods and compliance allow them to wriggle and squeeze through narrowings and gaps. However, these environments frequently contain features that are impassable with passive deformation alone, such as sharp turns and T-junctions. In this work, we developed the first closed-loop, peristaltic turning algorithm that scales turning

Proprioceptive input is essential for motor control, yet clinical assessment of proprioceptive deficits relies largely on psychophysical tests that depend on self-report, are vulnerable to cognitive interference and bias, and probe conscious aspects of sensation. In this proof-of-concept study, we propose the automatic muscular response to passive limb displacement-the placing response-as a complementary, more objective marker of proprioceptive adequacy. Using surface electromyography (EMG) from the anterior and posterior deltoid during shoulder movements, we first confirm that placing is a ge

BackgroundProprioception is critical for daily activities and is often impaired after stroke. Recent studies have highlighted the prevalence of proprioceptive impairments of the upper limb in stroke; however, few studies have examined the relationship between proprioceptive impairments and motor function.ObjectiveWe examined how proprioceptive detection thresholds (movement discrimination thresholds [MDTs]) relate to existing assessments of upper limb proprioceptive, motor, and clinical function after stroke.MethodsStroke (N = 39) and control participants (N = 39) completed 5 tasks using the K

Proprioceptive feedback is essential for motor control and prosthetic embodiment, yet myoelectric prostheses lack naturalistic sensory input. Artificial skin stretch stimulation has emerged as a preferred method to convey proprioceptive cues, but current friction-based devices face limitations preventing integration into practical prostheses. This work investigates magnetically induced skin stretch as a non-invasive, potentially implantable alternative. We present MISS (Magnetically Induced Skin Stretch), a novel system that uses external coils to control magnets adhered to the skin, producing

BACKGROUND: Upper limb proprioceptive impairments are common after stroke and affect daily function. Recent work has shown that stroke survivors have difficulty using visual information to improve proprioception. It is unclear how eye movements are impacted to guide action of the arm after stroke. Here, we aimed to understand how upper limb proprioceptive impairments impact eye movements in individuals with stroke.
METHODS: Control (N = 20) and stroke participants (N = 20) performed a proprioceptive matching task with upper limb and eye movements. A KINARM exoskeleton with eye tracking was us

OBJECTIVE: Friedreich ataxia (FA) neuropathology affects dorsal root ganglia, posterior columns in the spinal cord, the spinocerebellar tracts, and cerebellar dentate nuclei. The impact of the somatosensory system on ataxic symptoms remains debated. This study aims to better evaluate the contribution of somatosensory processing to ataxia clinical severity by simultaneously investigating passive movement and tactile pneumatic stimulation in individuals with FA.
METHODS: Twenty patients with FA and 20 healthy participants were included. All subjects underwent two 6 min block-design functional m

Both surgeons and patients want to achieve a high level of satisfaction and the best possible functional results within a short time after knee TEP surgery. By using a tool that digitally records various measurement parameters of balance and motor function preoperatively and postoperatively on a mobile basis and with little time expenditure, progressive results can be compared. Individual factors can thus be determined and these can influence the progress in regeneration and training progress perioperatively. In a prospective study, 100 patients before and 66 patients after installation of a ce

Basic science and clinical evidence suggest that cervical spine disorders can lead to dizziness. The cervical spine has highly developed proprioceptive receptors, whose input information is integrated with the visual and vestibular systems in the central nervous system, acting on the neck and eye muscles to maintain the coordinative motion of the head, eyes, neck, and body through various reflex activities. When the cervical proprioceptive input changes due to the mismatch or conflict between vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive inputs, cervicogenic dizziness may occur. The diagnosis of cerv

BACKGROUND: Although flexible flatfoot (FF) in children is a foot deformity that is frequently encountered in daily orthopedics practice, its etiology is still controversial. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a weakness in muscle strength and proprioception in patients with FF.
METHODS: The study group consisted of 16 cases with FF, and the control group consisted of 25 volunteers with normal feet. An isokinetic dynamometer was used to assess muscle strength and proprioception of movement directions of plantarflexion, dorsiflexion, eversion (EV), and inversion (INV) in b

We investigated modulation of functional neuronal connectivity by a proprioceptive stimulus in sixteen young people with dystonia and eight controls. A robotic wrist interface delivered controlled passive wrist extension movements, the onset of which was synchronised with scalp EEG recordings. Data were segmented into epochs around the stimulus and up to 160 epochs per subject were averaged to produce a Stretch Evoked Potential (StretchEP). Event-related network dynamics were estimated using a methodology that features Wavelet Transform Coherency (WTC). Global Microscale Nodal Strength (GMNS)

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether different phenotypes of cervical dystonia (CD) express different types and levels of somatosensory impairment.
METHODS: We assessed somatosensory function in patients with CD with and without tremor (n = 12 each) and in healthy age-matched controls (n = 22) by measuring tactile temporal discrimination thresholds of the nondystonic forearm and proprioceptive acuity in both the dystonic (head/neck) and nondystonic body segments (forearm/hand) using a joint position-matching task. The head or the wrist was passively displaced along different axes to distinct joint

Performance of timed motor sequences relies on the cerebellum and basal ganglia, which integrate proprioceptive information during the motor task and set internal timing mechanisms. Accordingly, these structures are also involved in other temporal processes, such as the discrimination of the different afferent information in the domain of time. In the present study we tested temporal processing of proprioceptive and tactile stimuli in 20 patients with neurodegenerative cerebellar ataxia and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Tactile temporal discrimination threshold was defined as the v

We characterized upper trunk and pelvis motion in normal subjects and in subjects with vestibular or proprioceptive loss, to document upper body movement modes in the pitch and roll planes during quiet stance. Six bilateral vestibular loss (VL), six bilateral lower-leg proprioceptive loss (PL) and 28 healthy subjects performed four stance tasks: standing on firm or foam surface with eyes open or closed. Motion of the upper body was measured using two pairs of body-worn gyroscopes, one mounted at the pelvis and the other pair at the shoulders. Pitch and roll angular velocities recorded from the

OBJECTIVE: The sensorimotor organization (SMO) of the motor hand area is abnormal in focal hand dystonia and likely contributes to symptom manifestation. In healthy subjects SMO is changed by training with proprioceptive stimulation. Here we test whether similar interventions reverse the abnormal SMO in musician's dystonia and writer's cramp. If so, they could be developed for therapeutic application.
METHODS: In six non-musicians, six professional musicians, six patients with musician's dystonia, and six patients with writer's cramp, SMO was explored by measuring changes in short-interval-in

The aim of this study is to search if there is any proprioceptive difference between auto and allograft anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions, and also to determine if there is any relationship between instrumented anterior knee laxity and proprioception after an ACL reconstruction. The following four groups were constituted for this purpose: group I, control group; group II, autograft reconstructions; group III, allograft reconstructions and group IV, people with injured ACLs. Each group consisted of 20 patients/volunteers. Two subgroups were constituted according to the findings o

Proprioceptive facilitation (PF) is a phenomenon occasionally seen during motor restoration following acute hemiplegia. At an early stage of recovery, a number of brief passive muscle stretches can facilitate voluntary contraction in the stretched muscles. Here we present a patient who during early recovery from a left hemispheric stroke causing right hemiplegia was able to develop maximum isometric arm force if, during this effort, large-amplitude passive stretches of the elbow were applied as conditioning stimuli. Based on clinical and positron emission tomography findings, possible physiolo

To study the potential aftereffects of virtual environments (VE), tests of visually guided behavior and felt limb position (pointing with eyes open and closed) along with self-reports of motion sickness-like discomfort were administered before and after 30 min exposure of 34 subjects. When post- discomfort was compared to a pre-baseline, the participants reported more sickness afterward (p < 0.03). The change in felt limb position resulted in subjects pointing higher (p < 0.038) and slightly to the left, although the latter difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.08). When findings
