Prospective studies of Bartonella of rodents. Part II. Diverse infections in a single rodent community.

The genetic diversity of Bartonella species within a small mammal community and in individual cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) was examined by trapping, capturing, sampling, and releasing of marked animals over a 17-month interval. Based on sequence analyses of the Bartonella gltA gene, amplicons separated into four genogroups (A, B, C, and Pin) containing 11 variants. Although the prevalence of bacteremia due to different genogroups/variants of Bartonella was temporally variable, variants of genogroup A predominated during each sampling period. Multiple gltA variants were often (20.5% of indiv

[Psychosocial factors of preserving health? Prospective studies of breast cancer, bronchial cancer and fibrocystic mastopathy].

Do psychosocial factors affect the development of health? 156 patients were interviewed and tested before a breast biopsy or before the initial medical treatment of lung cancer. Multiple regressions examined the influence of age, diagnosis (tumor stage) and different psychosocial parameters as dependent variables the development of health after 2 or 5 years as independent variables. The breastbiopsy-group (n = 52) shows five psychological variables being effective in a positive (health promoting) manner: autonomy, emotional outlet, expression of one's needs, family support, lack of life stress

Risks and complications of clinical cardiac electrophysiologic studies: a prospective analysis of 1,000 consecutive patients.

The complications of clinical cardiac electrophysiologic studies were prospectively evaluated in 1,000 consecutive patients studied in one laboratory with an unaltered protocol to better assess the risks of this procedure. There were 728 men and the mean age of the entire group was 58 years (range 16 to 84). Coronary artery disease was the most common type of heart disease (56%) and 200 patients had no identifiable organic heart disease. The indication for study was a ventricular tachyarrhythmia or cardiac arrest in 582 patients. Each patient underwent an initial (baseline) study and 444 patie

Glaucoma Management Therapies and Clinical Outcomes in an African Population: A Review of Prospective Studies.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in Africa, with disease burden exacerbated by limited access to eye care, shortages of trained ophthalmologists, and socioeconomic disparities. This review synthesizes prospective and interventional studies evaluating glaucoma management modalities and associated clinical outcomes in an African population. Trabeculectomy remains the predominant surgical intervention, achieving success rates of approximately 80%, with enhanced outcomes when augmented with anti-metabolites such as mitomycin-C or 5-fluorouracil. Laser-based interventions, incl

Inhaled nitric oxide after lung transplantation: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

BACKGROUND: Lung transplantation (LT) improves survival and quality of life for patients with end-stage lung disease, but ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) poses significant challenges. IRI leads to prolonged ICU stays and increased mortality, primarily due to primary graft dysfunction (PGD), especially grade 3 PGD. Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO), a known vasodilator and antioxidant, has been explored for the management of IRI and for mitigating PGD3 severity. Some studies recommend its preventive use; however, insufficient evidence has delayed regulatory approval. METHODS: A systematic review an

Habitual physical activity and sarcopenia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Habitual physical activity (HPA) has been associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia by enhancing skeletal muscle protein synthesis and suppressing systemic inflammation. However, the evidence for a long-term protective association remains inconclusive. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the association between HPA and sarcopenia. METHODS: We searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure for prospective cohort studies on

Influence of serum lipids and polyunsaturated fatty acids on rosacea: Insights from prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have suggested potential links between dermatological conditions, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular health, yet the relationship between serum lipids and rosacea remains uncertain. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Utilizing data from UK Biobank, we employed Cox proportional hazard models to evaluate the correlation between rosacea and serum lipids, with mediation analysis further elucidating the underlying mechanisms. Additionally, two-sample Mendelian randomization and linkage disequilibrium score regression were performed to determine the genetic association.

Preliminary effects of ayahuasca on mental and physical health: A systematic review of prospective studies.

Ayahuasca is a psychedelic plant brew that has been used in Central and South America for centuries. Recently, there has been an increase in "drug tourism" to places where ayahuasca is legally available as well as increased scientific interest in its potential mental and physical health benefits. Despite a growing body of research over the last decade, no studies to date have systematically synthesized the long-term health effects of ayahuasca. Thus, we conducted a systematic review of prospective ayahuasca studies that reported long-term health outcomes. A total of 18 studies were included in

Accelerated Biological Aging, Genetic Susceptibility, and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Two Prospective Cohort Studies.

Background: Biological aging is considered a vital risk factor for age-related diseases, but its role in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of biological aging with NAFLD and the modified effect of genetic susceptibility. Methods: This study included 329,040 participants from the UK Biobank and 6783 participants from the Dongfeng-Tongji Cohort in China. We calculated the chronological age-adjusted biological age as a surrogate measure for biological aging. Accelerated aging was defined as biological age that exceeded chron

Atrial fibrillation and the risk of bone fractures: A meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Some observational studies have suggested that atrial fibrillation (AF) might be associated with an increased risk of bone fracture, but the results remain inconsistent. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between them by performing a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies. METHODS: We identified relevant studies through PubMed and Embase databases up to the end of October 2023. Study characteristics and outcomes were abstracted for each included study. Pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations of AF with fracture risk were c

Plasma prolactin and postmenopausal breast cancer risk: a pooled analysis of four prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Prolactin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, regulates breast development and may contribute to breast cancer etiology. However, most epidemiologic studies of prolactin and breast cancer have been restricted to single, often small, study samples with limited exploration of effect modification. METHODS: The Biomarkers in Breast Cancer Risk Prediction consortium includes 8,279 postmenopausal women sampled from four prospective cohort studies, of whom 3,441 were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer after enrollment. Prolactin concentrations were measured for all study parti

Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Athletes Sustaining Repetitive Head Impacts: A Systematic Review of Prospective Studies.

Competitive sport participation, in contact and collision sports, exposes athletes to repetitive head impacts. Although these impacts do not always result in overt symptomology or a diagnosed "concussion," evidence indicates that cumulative repetitive impacts affect brain pathophysiology. The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review of prospective, longitudinal trials evaluating repetitive head impact exposure on white matter (WM) microstructure in collision and contact sport athletes to inform clinical care and treatment strategies. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic
