Interface and biocompatibility of polyethylene terephthalate knee ligament prostheses. A histological and ultrastructural device retrieval analysis in failed synthetic implants used for surgical repair of anterior cruciate ligaments.

In a prospective clinical study of 54 patients with acute anterior cruciate ligament instability, 56 artificial ligaments made of polyethylene terephthalate (Trevira hochfest) were implanted to restore knee stability. The average follow-up of these artificial knee ligaments was 40.2 (12-79) months; five implants (10%) had to be explanted due to failure after an average of 17.8 (6-50) months. All explants were examined by histological and ultrastructural methods in a device retrieval analysis. With regard to short- and medium-term artificial ligament failure in the human knee joint, a non-isome

An innovative approach for retreatment of prosthetically failing implant-supported fixed prostheses with a complete digital workflow: A technique report.

Complications in fixed implant prostheses are frequently encountered and can negatively impact patients' quality of life. This technique outlines a complete digital workflow for the remake of full-mouth, implant-supported, cement-retained restorations necessitated by esthetic and functional impairments. For the digital recording of reused abutments, a contemporary technique was employed in which extraorally scanned abutment data were digitally superimposed onto their corresponding counterparts in the intraoral scans. The jaw relation record procedures were completed in stages. Initially, centr

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of the stability of tooth-implant supported prostheses for mandibular anterior dentition defects.

BACKGROUND: While tooth-implant supported prostheses (TISP) are commonly used in the posterior region, few studies report on their anatomical suitability or mechanical behavior in the anterior mandible. This study analyzed CBCT data from patients with mandibular anterior edentulism and constructed three-dimensional finite element models to investigate the anatomical constraints of this region and to compare the biomechanical behavior of different restorative designs involving TISP. METHODS: Based on CBCT images of 524 patients, 3D reconstruction using Mimics 21.0 was performed to measure avai

Accuracy of virtual patient reconstruction for complete arch implant-supported prostheses with extraoral scan body-assisted registration.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Extraoral scan bodies have been increasingly used to reconstruct virtual patients for complete arch implant-supported prostheses. However, their accuracy compared with that of conventional tooth surface-guided registration for reconstructing the jaw-to-bone positional relationship of virtual patients remains unknown. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy and repeatability of 2 methods of reconstructing the jaw-to-bone positional relationships in virtual patients for complete arch implant-supported prostheses: scan body-assisted registration and t

Implant-supported prostheses following the biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) after implantoplasty procedures: A dental technique.

Esthetic concerns may appear on implant-supported prostheses after peri-implantitis treatment, such as implantoplasty procedures that includes the thread removal and surface smoothening. A technique for restoring implants that have been treated for peri-implantitis using an implantoplasty procedure combined with the detoxification of the implant surfaces is described. The technique involves the fabrication of an implant-supported prosthesis following the biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) and aims to solve esthetic complications after this peri-implantitis treatment approach.

Are patient-reported outcomes improved by implant-assisted maxillary prostheses compared to conventional maxillary dentures? A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Edentulism can be treated with conventional complete dentures or implant-assisted prostheses. While two-implant assisted overdentures are superior to conventional mandibular dentures, the effectiveness of maxillary options remains unclear. This systematic review aims to assess whether conventional or implant-assisted maxillary prostheses provide better satisfaction and quality of life for patients with edentulous maxilla. DATA AND SOURCES: An electronic search was conducted across Medline (PubMed), Scopus, Embase, and the Cochrane Library up to May 23, 2024, to find studies compar

Outcomes of patients at estimated low surgical risk undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation with balloon-expandable prostheses.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Transcatheter aortic-valve implantation (TAVI) is an accepted treatment for patients with severe aortic stenosis and high surgical risk. However, there is lack in data about TAVI in low-risk patients that are already being treated with this therapy in some clinical contexts. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients treated with transfemoral TAVI using Edwards Sapien prosthesis in one center was performed, classifying the patients into three groups according to the surgical risk (high/intermediate/low risk for STS score>8/4-8/<4). Clinical characteristics, pro

Innate immune response and implant loosening: Interferon gamma is inversely associated with early migration of total knee prostheses.

To allow prediction of the risk of loosening prior to surgery, we investigated the relationship between innate immune cytokine response via TLR2 stimulation and early migration of six different knee prostheses using RSA (radiostereometry). This study included 114 patients of a prospective RSA-cohort who received a total knee arthroplasty. Whole blood cytokine responses were obtained by ex vivo stimulation with tripalmitoyl-S-glycerylcysteine (Pam3Cys-SK4) for assessment of the TLR2 immune response. Early migration was calculated using the maximum total point motion (MTPM) 1 year post surgery.

Simultaneous transapical aortic and mitral valve-in-valve implantation for double prostheses dysfunction: case report and technical insights.

Transcatheter "Valve-in-Valve" implantation (ViV) has shown promising results in high-risk patients suffering from structural valve deterioration (SVD) of a previously implanted heart valve bioprosthesis. We present a case of a 68-year-old woman with a history of three previous cardiac operations on the aortic and mitral valve. At the time of admission she was severely symptomatic due to a simultaneous SVD of a 23 mm aortic and of a 29 mm mitral St. Jude Biocor bioprosthesis. Because of the history of several cardiac operations and to her comorbidities, the patient was considered with an extre
