Proteus species are Gram-negative, highly motile opportunistic pathogens belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae and are widely distributed in the environment, including the human digestive tract and animals. PURPOSE: To present a case report of a rare ocular manifestation of Proteus syndrome-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
METHODS: Retrospective review of the patient's medical record and a review of the literature.
RESULTS: A 16-year-old boy with Proteus syndrome who presented with a total retinal detachment because of an operculated retinal tear. This patient underwent successful surgical repair of the retinal detachment and subsequent cataract surgery.
CONCLUSION: Proteus syndrome may be complicated by the development of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, which can present in childhood.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Indole negative Proteus species are invariably incorrectly identified as P. mirabilis, missing isolates of Proteus penneri. P. penneri is an invasive pathogen capable of causing major infectious diseases still seldom reported in individual cases. We report here the isolation, differentiation, characterization and typing of P. penneri from patients with different clinical infections.
METHODS: Urine, pus and body fluids collected from patients in intensive care units, wards and out patients departments of a tertiary health care institute from north India were cultured.

In this review we use images from an 11-year-old male to describe Proteus syndrome, a complex disorder with multisystem involvement and great clinical variability. Our aim is to enhance recognition of the typical imaging findings, which can aid diagnosis of this rare condition.

We report the first case of orbital cellulitis and endogenous endophthalmitis secondary to Proteus mirabilis bacteremia that resulted from a calculus cholecystitis. Despite resolution of the gallbladder infection with antimicrobial therapy, the patient required evisceration of the affected eye. The pathogenesis of hematogenous endophthalmitis due to Gram-negative bacilli is discussed.

I report 2 unusual cases of Proteus syndrome that support the concept of somatic mosaicism. In one patient, a huge connective tissue nevus covered the chest and abdomen and hyperostoses of the calvaria were observed. Hyperammonemia with coma, tachypnea, and respiratory alkalosis developed in a 3-year-old boy with prune"-belly syndrome during a urinary tract infection with Proteus mirabilis. Hyperammonemia is thought to have resulted from the production within the massively dilated urinary tract of excessive amounts of ammonia due to bacterial urease, and its subsequent reabsorption into the systemic circulation. The patient rapidly improved following parenteral antibiotic therapy and continuous catheter drainage of the urinary tract.
