Psychometric properties of the modified Symptom Severity Index (SSI).

The psychometric properties of the modified Symptom Severity Index were investigated to assess the relationships among dimensions of pain in temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The 15-item instrument is composed of ordinal scales assessing five pain dimensions (intensity, frequency, duration, unpleasantness and difficulty to endure) as experienced in three locations (temple, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masseter). In 108 closed-lock subjects, Cronbach's alpha was used to measure internal consistency resulting in 31 of the 105 pair-wise comparisons >or=0.71. Multilevel exploratory factor analy

Psychometric validation of a condom self-efficacy scale in Korean.

BACKGROUND: When an instrument is translated for use in cross-cultural research, it needs to account for cultural factors without distorting the psychometric properties of the instrument. OBJECTIVES: To validate the psychometric properties of the condom self-efficacy scale (CSE) originally developed for American adolescents and young adults after translating the scale to Korean (CSE-K) to determine its suitability for cross-cultural research among Korean college students. METHODS: A cross-sectional, correlational design was used with an exploratory survey methodology through self-report ques

Psychometric properties of the Early Trauma Inventory-Self Report.

Childhood trauma is an important public health problem, but there are limitations in our ability to measure childhood abuse. The purpose of this study was to develop a self-report instrument for the assessment of childhood trauma that is valid but simple to administer. A total of 288 subjects with and without trauma and psychiatric disorders were assessed with the Early Trauma Inventory-Self Report (ETI-SR), an instrument for the assessment of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as general traumas, which measures frequency, onset, emotional impact, and other variables. Validity and

Psychometric analysis of the Functional Independence Score in Haemophilia (FISH).

Joint morbidity in haemophilia has traditionally been measured using clinical and radiological scores. There have been no reliable, validated tools for the assessment of functional independence in persons with haemophilia till recently. The Functional Independence Score in Haemophilia (FISH) has been developed as a performance based assessment tool to address this need. The FISH is designed to measure the patient's independence in performing activities of daily living (grooming and eating, bathing and dressing), transfers (chair and floor), and mobility (walking, step climbing and running). The empirical redefinition of the psychometric criteria for remission in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Current definitions of remission for mania and bipolar depression are convention-rather than empirically-based, and their clinical salience is unclear, as few studies have attempted to calibrate them against objective clinical criteria. This study aimed to determine equivalence scores on two widely used clinical rating scales, the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), that corresponded with an objective global clinical measure of remission in bipolar disorder patients. METHODS: Data from four pharmacological randomised controlled tr

Psychophysical indices of perceptual functioning in dyslexia: A psychometric analysis.

An influential causal theory attributes dyslexia to visual and/or auditory perceptual deficits. This theory derives from group differences between individuals with dyslexia and controls on a range of psychophysical tasks, but there is substantial variation, both between individuals within a group and from task to task. We addressed two questions. First, do psychophysical measures have sufficient reliability to assess perceptual deficits in individuals? Second, do different psychophysical tasks measure a common underlying construct? We studied 104 adults with a wide range of reading ability and

The psychometric properties of the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation (BFNE) Scale in a nonclinical, nonstudent sample. Participants were administered the BFNE Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the UCLA Loneliness Scale. No differences were found across age, but women scored significantly higher on the BFNE Scale than men. Confirmatory factor analysis supported a two-factor solution corresponding to positive and reverse scored items. Internal consistency was excellent for the positive scored factor (alpha=.94), acceptable for the reverse scored factor (alpha=.73),

[Excessive computer usage in adolescents--results of a psychometric evaluation].

Excessive computer and video game playing among children is being critically discussed from a pedagogic and public health point of view. To date, no reliable data for this phenomenon in Germany exists. In the present study, the excessive usage of computer and video games is seen as a rewarding behavior which can, due to learning mechanisms, become a prominent and inadequate strategy for children to cope with negative emotions like frustration, uneasiness and fears. In the survey, 323 children ranging in age from 11 to 14 years were asked about their video game playing behavior. Criteria for ex

Psychometric study of dysthymic patients and their first-degree relatives.

Psychometric evaluation of severity of depression and personality characteristics of 20 dysthymic patients (mean age 29.05+/-7.08 ys.) was carried out using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and was compared with that of 20 major depressive patients (mean age 33.60+/-7.7ys.) and 20 normal controls (mean age 32.85+/-6.17 ys.). Psychosocial stressors that might trigger depression were also looked for. All first-degree relatives (118 persons) were subjected to clinical interview for detection of dysthymia. EPQ was also applied to assess their pers

Psychometric characteristics of the minimum data set II: validity.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the validity of the Minimum Data Set (MDS). DESIGN: MDS domain scores were correlated with a variety of independently obtained measures of basic behavioral and mental health functions of 513 nursing home residents. SETTING: All participants were residents of the Philadelphia Geriatric Center. PARTICIPANTS: One group of residents (n = 260) represented consecutive admissions who were able to respond to formal testing. The other group of residents (n = 253) represented presumably cognitively impaired residents whose data did not depend on self-report. MEASUREMENTS: MDS

Psychometric characteristics of the Scale for Suicide Ideation with psychiatric outpatients.

The psychometric properties of the Scale for Suicide Ideation--Current (SSI-C; Beck, Kovacs & Weissman, 1979, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 47, 343-352) and the Scale for Suicide Ideation--Worst (SSI-W; Beck, Brown, Steer, Dahlsgaard & Grisham, 1997, in press) were explored. These 19-item clinician-administered scales measure current suicide ideation (SSI-C) as well as suicide ideation at its worst point in the patient's life (SSI-W). For a sample of 4063 outpatients, both scales were positively correlated with a diagnosis of a principal mood disorder, a diagnosis of a persona

Assessment of life history of aggression: development and psychometric characteristics.

The Life History of Aggression (LHA) assessment was administered to up to 252 subjects. In addition to a total LHA score, subscale scores for Aggression, Social Consequences and Antisocial Behavior, and Self-directed Aggression were calculated. Test-retest stability, interrater agreement, and internal consistency reliability were excellent both for the LHA Total score and the LHA Aggression subscore. There were moderately strong correlations between these scores and both self-reports of aggressive tendency (Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory: n = 214) and recent overt aggression (Overt Aggression

Psychometric properties of four anxiety measures in older adults.

Despite relatively high prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in older adults, little attention has been paid to the establishment of psychometrically sound measures for this population. The current study addresses this issue by examining the psychometric properties of four self-report anxiety measures: the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Worry Scale (WS), Fear Questionnaire (FQ), and Padua Inventory (PI). Two older adult community subsamples were assessed, one with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD; n = 50) and the other with no anxiety complaints (Normal Controls: NC; n = 9

Amnesia and recognition memory: a re-analysis of psychometric data.

The present study compared the recognition memory deficit in different groups of amnesics using scores from a standard test. The data, taken from a literature search, came from 33 studies reporting the performance of amnesic subjects on the recognition memory test (RMT) [77]. A total of 112 amnesic subjects were grouped according to their pathology. In addition, the analysis included subjects with schizophrenia, amygdala damage, or frontal lobe damage. Of these three nonamnesic groups, only the frontal lobe subjects were impaired on both RMT subtests, while the schizophrenics showed a dispropo

Differential validity of psychometric tests in dementia of the Alzheimer type.

Forty-nine patients with a clinical diagnosis of probable dementia of the Alzheimer type underwent an extensive test battery designed to evaluate cognitive deficits according to NINCDS/ADRDA criteria. All patients demonstrated signs of impairment on this test battery. One day later, they were administered a second test battery that consisted of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMS), the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS), the SKT test (SKT), and the Brief Cognitive Rating Scale (BCRS) to assess the construct validity, sensitivity, and possible shortcomings of these tests. A control

Psychometric profiles of patient populations with excessive daytime sleepiness.

Patients with narcolepsy have more psychiatric symptoms than normal controls as measured by psychometric tests. However, it is unclear whether these findings are specific to narcolepsy, as some studies have suggested, or related to excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) or to chronic illness. We compared a group of 56 narcoleptics to age- and sex-matched controls with EDS. A group of 48 individuals with normal sleep architecture was also used as an additional control group. Both the narcoleptic group and the EDS-control group had significantly greater scores on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality In

Salivary steroids and psychometric parameters in male marathon runners.

Testosterone and cortisol in male marathon runners (n = 11) were determined in saliva samples (n = 28) collected during the three rest days preceding a competitive marathon and in the samples collected at 08.00h on the race day. An Eysenck Personality Inventory was completed on the first rest day and psychological state was assessed on rest days and on the morning of the marathon by completion of visual analogue scales for anxiety, depression, hostility and libido at four times each day. Anxiety, depression and hostility were positively inter-correlated. Extraversion and depression were negati

Intellectual impairment in adolescent psychosis. A controlled psychometric study.

The relationship of cognitive impairment to the course of schizophrenia remains uncertain. By studying psychotic adolescents, 90% of whom were hospitalized for the first time, we hoped to reduce the influence of such confounding variables as lengthy disease process, neuroleptic treatment, and institutionalization. 39 psychotic adolescent subjects who fulfilled DSM-III criteria for schizophrenia, schizophreniform psychosis, paranoid schizophrenia, or atypical psychosis were compared to 41 non-psychotic adolescent psychiatric controls. Subjects were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale f
