Informal Caregivers As True Partners In Mental Health Recovery: Is It Time For A Complete Rewrite?

This viewpoint highlights the indispensable role of informal caregivers in mental health recovery. The authors note that mental disorders affect around one in eight people worldwide, with major impacts on family quality of life and substantial health system costs. Informal caregivers are advocated not as peripheral supporters, but as key partners in care pathways, to be recognized in public policies and clinical practice. Scientific evidence shows their involvement reduces relapses, isolation, and hospitalization rates. This viewpoint identifies significant psychosocial risks facing informal c

Human papillomavirus-related psychosocial impact of patients with genital warts in China: a hospital-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Genital warts (GW) are the most common sexually transmitted infections. To date, few studies using a human papillomavirus (HPV)-specific questionnaire have focused on the impact of quality of life (QoL) among patients with GW in developing countries. The origins of GW related psychosocial burdens and variations between genders were poorly characterized as well. METHODS: A hospital-based survey was conducted in Beijing and Nanjing of China in 2008. Eligible patients aged 18-65 who had a diagnosis of GW within 3 months were recruited. Demographic information, HPV knowledge, and asse

Intersecting stigma, social exclusion and coping mechanisms among women living with obstetric fistula in rural northern Ghana: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula is a preventable childbirth injury that remains socially devastating for women in low-resource settings. Existing evidence on obstetric fistula stigma is largely derived from treatment centres and urban settings, leaving limited understanding of the lived experiences of women in underserved rural communities. This study addresses this knowledge gap by qualitatively examining stigma, coping strategies, and support needs among obstetric fistula survivors in Kpandai District, northern Ghana. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory descriptive design was used. Fourteen wo

Suicide in Northern Ireland: epidemiology, risk factors, and prevention.

The rates of suicide and self-harm in Northern Ireland are high, and have increased from 143 registered suicides in 1996 to 313 in 2010 and 318 in 2015. This Review summarises the epidemiology of suicidal behaviour, as well as the evidence from a small number of studies that have identified risk factors associated with high suicide rates in Northern Ireland. These risk factors were mental illness, trauma, exposure to the conflict known as the Troubles, deprivation, relationship problems, employment difficulties, financial difficulties, being LGBT, childhood adversities, and alcohol or drug use

Global to individual: key domains of burden in pediatric headache.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pediatric headache not only impacts an individual's psychosocial, physical, and academic functioning, but also imposes a burden on their broader systems (e.g. healthcare, financial systems). Literature regarding the bidirectional nature of the socioecological burden of pediatric headache has yet to be synthesized. This is crucial, given the importance of identifying next steps for health-policy, advocacy, research, and intervention development for pediatric headache. RECENT FINDINGS: Globally, rates of pediatric headache have risen, with incidence and prevalence varying by

Centralization of Cleft Lip and Palate Services in the United Kingdom: The Views of Adult "Returners".

BACKGROUND: Since the implementation of centralized services in the United Kingdom for those affected by cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P), several studies have investigated the impact of service rationalization on the delivery of care. While large-scale quantitative studies have demonstrated improvements in a range of patient outcomes, and smaller studies have reported on the benefits and challenges of centralization from the views of health professionals, little research has attempted to capture the patient perspective. Furthermore, few studies have investigated the views of adult "returners" w
