Cognitive- behavioral psychotherapy of patients with tinnitus.

In this work 112 studies were reviewed and 21 of them were considered as more reliable and more credible. It is well known that Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the most valid approach regarding its effectiveness. There are many variations of CBT used in patients with tinnitus, but the most effective appears to be the Cognitive-Behavioural Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Also, treatment-variations consist in the use of hearing aids, and psycho-education. The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a third-generation psychological intervention invented by Steven Hayes in 1986. This therap

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy with a client with bulimia nervosa.

This case study presents the progress of one patient with bulimia nervosa who was originally very compromised in psychological domains that are the focus of analytic treatment, and includes in-session therapeutic process and a range of outcomes, for example, eating disorder symptoms, attachment status, and reflective functioning. Nested in a study showing more rapid behavioral improvement in subjects receiving cognitive behavior therapy than in subjects receiving psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the case highlights the importance of supplementing RCTs with single case studies and the need of adap

[Are there specific factors in the psychotherapy of anorexia nervosa?].

The present literature review examines the question of how general and specific factors can be differentiated in the psychotherapy of anorexia nervosa. Over the past 10 years different research trends have appeared. On the one hand subclassifications of new therapy approaches from several schools of therapy have been propagated (e.g. CBT-E, FPT), on the other hand generic treatment manuals have been published that are rather adapted to patients needs (e.g. SSCM, TTM). On a third way, currently therapy manuals for special subgroups have been developed, e.g. for chronic patients with anorexia ne

Mentalization-based psychotherapy interventions with mothers-to-be.

In recent years, the theory of mentalization has been applied to a number of clinically relevant areas including psychotherapy for patients with borderline personality disorder, therapy with adolescents and children, treatment of self-harm in young people, parent-infant early interventions, and even community outreach (see Midgley & Vrouvam, 2012. Minding the child: Mentalizing interventions with children, young people, and their families. London and New York: Routledge). Extending on this body of work, the present article applies the theory of mentalization to psychotherapies that aim to help

Emotional regulation: implications for the psychobiology of psychotherapy.

A range of studies have contributed to understanding the psychobiology of emotional regulation. Functional imaging studies have demonstrated that cortico-limbic circuitry plays an important role in mediating processes such as reappraisal and suppression. Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex may be important in conscious reframing, while ventromedial prefrontal cortex and orbitofrontal cortex may be particularly important in emotion evaluation. Gene variants and early environments impact underlying emotional regulation and its neurobiology. It may be hypothesized that during interventions such as psy

[Psychodynamic psychotherapy and the treatment of pathological gambling].

OBJECTIVE: The search for empirically based treatments for pathological gambling is in its infancy, with relatively few clinical trials and an absence of naturalistic studies. Treatment retention of gamblers has been a problem; cognitive-behavioral treatment and pharmacotherapy studies report especially high dropout rates. Psychodynamic approaches, with their emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, and the meaning of the patient's self-destructive and seemingly irrational behaviors, and on obstacles to self-forgiveness, might improve outcome. METHOD: After a description of psychodynamic psy

On necessity and sufficiency in counseling and psychotherapy (revisited).

It seems to me that Carl Rogers (see record 2007-14639-002) was far too ambitious in trying to specify general conditions of necessity and sufficiency that would be relevant to the entire spectrum of problems and the diverse expectancies and personalities of the people who seek our help. Rogers' position and orientation almost totally overlook the array of problems under the rubric of "response deficits" that stem from misinformation and missing information and call for active correction, training, and retraining. Rogers also paid scant attention to problems with significant biological determi

Psychotherapy for bipolar disorders - efficacy and effectiveness.

This paper explores the development of psychological treatments as an adjunct to medication in bipolar disorders. Randomized controlled treatment trials of specific therapy models, such as cognitive therapy, that tackle a spectrum of complex psychological and social problems associated with bipolar disorders are reviewed. A systematic review of the most recent treatment outcome studies suggest that adjunctive psychological therapies reduce overall rates of relapse, but are more effective for depression than for mania. There is no evidence that any particular therapy has a unique mechanism of a

Reflections on relevance: Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics in 2004.

Relevance of an article is a highly desirable yet hardly predictable quality at the time of its publication. Article relevance is frequently measured by the impact factor of the journal where the article is published. Furthermore, impact factor, citation index and citation analysis are used as a measure of research progress and scientific wealth of a nation. The wisdom and significance of this approach to relevance is debatable and thus discussed here. In 2004, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics published a variety of articles which, in the author's view, are clinically relevant. Several selecte

A test of the phase model of psychotherapy change.

OBJECTIVE: A comparative trial of 2 forms (interpretive and supportive) of short-term, time-limited individual (STI) therapy provided data that were used to test the propositions of the Howard and others phase model of psychotherapy change. METHOD: Patients completed the Integra Outpatient Tracking Assessment Form on 5 occasions during the 20-session treatments. The measure assesses 3 dimensions: subjective well-being, current symptoms, and current life dysfunction. Howard and others regard these as dimensions that represent successive phases in the therapy change process (that is, well-being

General introduction to the psychotherapy of Pierre Janet.

This article deals with Pierre Janet's concept of "Psychological Analysis" (analyse psychologique). It brings out Janet's criticism of Sigmund Freud's ideas, and delineates the difference between psychological analysis (Janet) and psychoanalysis (Freud). Further it points out that Janet's theories on the pathogenesis of neurotic disorders rely on the concept of psychic trauma and associated fixed ideas. Mental force and mental tension, described in greater detail, are essential for the pathogenesis of mental disorders. According to Janet, a significant characteristic of the neurotically distur

Obesity as psychosomatic disease is a mass phenomenon. The number of obese males (BMI > 30) became doubled in the last ten years. In the etiology of obesity play an important role the reactive obesity. In the background of "yo-yo syndrome" often could be found depression, or other psychotic disorder. The low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, tension, anxiety disorders is well-known in a slimming diet. Obese subjects (n = 29) who were admitted on their request with a view to losing weight were examined (Hamilton Depressive Scala, Hamilton Anxietas Scala, Eating Attitude Test) Physical Conditio

[The role of psychotherapy in managing panic disorder].

This general presentation reviews briefly the various psychotherapies proposed for panic attacks and agoraphobia treatment. Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) is the only validated therapy. Behavioural model of agoraphobia and cognitive model of panic attacks are detailed. The main techniques are described. The results of controlled studies and meta-analyses demonstrate that CBT represents an alternative to anxiolytics and antidepressants. CBT is a brief form of therapy (10-20 sessions) which has been compared with waiting list, placebo, relaxation, antidepressants, anxiolytics or supportive th

Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy for the treatment of alcoholism in Germany.

Although past alcoholism treatment in Germany has primarily focused on psychotherapy, new advances in pharmacotherapy are expanding therapeutic options. Recent biomedical studies have produced new theories about how alcohol affects neurotransmitters in the brain. These studies have led to new pharmacologic strategies for the treatment of alcoholism using dopamine agonists and antagonists, serotoninergic agents, glutamate antagonists, and opiate antagonists. While preliminary studies of these agents offer encouraging results, it remains to be demonstrated which agent(s) will provide effective p

Behavioral psychotherapy applications in the medically ill.

Behavioral psychotherapy may promote physical health and treat some behavior-linked medical conditions. Prevention of risk factors, and relapse through self-management, the development of a healthy life-style and the possibility to use its technology in the community at a relatively low cost are emphasized. Controlled studies suggest its effectiveness in cardiovascular diseases, headaches, stuttering, alcoholism, pain and bulimia nervosa. Cancer, psychoneuroimmunology and AIDS are under investigation. [Torticollis spasmodicus. A contribution to psychogenesis and psychotherapy].

The application of an own psychotherapeutic concept to spasmodic torticollis confirms the assumption that it represents a pantomimic expression interacting with an assumed previous organic damage. An unavowed ambivalence between wishes for support and acknowledgement and feelings of limitation and aggression-by-frustration is reflected in simultaneous spasmodic turnings towards and away with a frequent preponderance of the impulse of anxious-aggressive averting. It directed treatment renders possible stable improvements.

Individual psychotherapy for the sexually abused child.

This paper describes one Center's experience using individual psychotherapy to help the sexually abused child. The approach described rests upon a five-part conceptualization of the traumatic experience: trauma, threat to ontogeny, neglect and emotional unavailability by the caregiver, child's feeling of exploitation, and the child's adaptation. The process of treatment is divided into three phases: starting, middle and closing. Some common issues which occur are guilt, loss and anger, as well as alterations in the child's sexual feelings. The psychotherapeutic approach to these and other issu
