Comparative analysis of the silver-gold and copper-titanium dioxide hybrid nanoparticles impact on flow and heat transfer of the pulsatile blood in occluded cerebral artery.

Arterial stenosis, which is the progressive narrowing of the lumen of blood vessels, severely compromises perfusion and leads to complex hemodynamic alterations. Evolving to address this challenge, hybrid nanofluids have emerged as a truly transformative solution due to their superior thermal and fluid properties. The present study numerically investigates the flow and heat transfer phenomena of two hybrid nanofluids, namely Silver-Gold (Ag-Au) and Copper-Titanium dioxide (Cu-TiO2), in a bifurcated artery with 50% stenosis. A three-dimensional computational model based on the FEM was developed

Comparison of hemodynamics in the ascending aorta between pulsatile and continuous flow left ventricular assist devices using computational fluid dynamics based on computed tomography images.

This study aims to investigate differences in hemodynamic conditions in the thoracic aorta for pulsatile and continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Patient-specific models were reconstructed from three patients with continuous-flow LVAD (HeartMate II, Thoratec Corporation) and three patients with biventricular assist devices (Excor, Berlin Heart) where only the aortic part was included in the simulations. CFD simulations were performed with constant inflow for the continuous-flow LVADs and time-varying inflow for the pulsatile devices.

Global and regional cerebral blood flow in neonatal piglets undergoing pulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass with continuous perfusion at 25 degrees C and circulatory arrest at 18 degrees C.

To investigate the influence of hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (HCPB) at 25 degrees C and circulatory arrest at 18 degrees C on the global and regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) during pulsatile perfusion, we performed the following studies in a neonatal piglet model. Using a pediatric physiologic pulsatile pump, we subjected six piglets to deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) and six other piglets to HCPB. The DHCA group underwent hypothermia for 25 min, DHCA for 60min, cold reperfusion for 10 min, and rewarming for 40 min. The HCPB group underwent 15 min of cooling, followed by 60

Pulsatility as a Potential Regulator of Cardiovascular Biology: Molecular, Cellular, and Hemodynamic Remodeling During Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Support and Following Heart Transplantation.

Pulsatile blood flow is a fundamental characteristic of cardiovascular physiology that regulates endothelial function, vascular homeostasis, microcirculatory integrity, and organ adaptation through complex mechanobiological pathways. The widespread use of continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (CF-LVADs) has created a unique clinical model of chronic pulsatility deprivation, whereas heart transplantation restores physiological pulsatile hemodynamics. This review examines the molecular, cellular, and systemic consequences of these contrasting circulatory states. Evidence from experimen

Improved left ventricular unloading and circulatory support with synchronized pulsatile left ventricular assistance compared with continuous-flow left ventricular assistance in an acute porcine left ventricular failure model.

OBJECTIVE: Controversy exists regarding the optimal pumping method for left ventricular assist devices. The purpose of this investigation was to test the hypothesis that pulsatile left ventricular assist synchronized to the cardiac cycle provides superior left ventricular unloading and circulatory support compared with continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices at the same level of ventricular assist device flow. METHODS: Seven male pigs were used to evaluate left ventricular assist device function using the TORVAD synchronized pulsatile-flow pump (Windmill Cardiovascular Systems, Inc, A

Comparison of the effects of bimatoprost and timolol on intraocular pressure and pulsatile ocular blood flow in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma: A prospective, open-label, randomized, two-arm, parallel-group study.

UNLABELLED: Abstract. BACKGROUND: The current objective of antiglaucomatous therapy is to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP), and thus to preserve visual function. Many ophthalmologists believe this objective is best achieved by methods that improve ocular blood flow to the optic nerve head. Beta-blockers are effective ocular hypotensive agents, but they can reduce choroidal blood flow. Bimatoprost, a new prostamide analogue, has been shown to have a better IOP-lowering effect compared with the nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker timolol maleate, but little is known about its effects

Combination of Inferior Vena Cava Diameter, Hepatic Venous Flow, and Portal Vein Pulsatility Index: Venous Excess Ultrasound Score (VEXUS Score) in Predicting Acute Kidney Injury in Patients with Cardiorenal Syndrome: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Fluid overload is deleterious in critically ill patients. It can lead to venous congestion, thereby increasing venous pressure, theoretically increasing the backpressure, and thereby reducing renal blood flow. Venous congestion thus can be an important contributor to acute kidney injury (AKI), with no validated tools to objectively identify venous congestion bedside. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients above 18 years admitted in ICU with a provisional diagnosis of cardiorenal syndrome were included in the study. Those with inadequate window, inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombus, and know

Pulsation of anastomotic vortex veins in pachychoroid spectrum diseases.

Accumulating evidence points to pachychoroid possibly being caused by vortex vein congestion which results in remodeling of choroidal drainage routes via intervortex vein anastomosis. This hypothesis prompted us to investigate vortex vein hemodynamics by studying videos of indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) in a retrospective case series of 295 eyes with pachychoroid spectrum diseases. In the early phase of the video-ICGA, pulsatile vortex venous flow was observed in 76 eyes (25.8%) at the vortex veins connected with anastomosis between superior and inferior vortex veins. The patients with p

Evaluation of a novel pulsatile extracorporeal life support system synchronized to the cardiac cycle: effect of rhythm changes on hemodynamic performance.

Arrhythmias are a frequent complication during extracorporeal life support (ECLS). A new ECLS system can provide pulsatile flow synchronized to the patient's intrinsic cardiac cycle based upon the R wave of the electrocardiogram (ECG). It is unclear how the occurrence of arrhythmias may alter the hemodynamic performance of the system. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of simulated arrhythmias on hemodynamics during R wave-triggered pulsatile ECLS. The ECLS circuit with an i-cor diagonal pump and iLA membrane ventilator was primed with whole blood at room temperature. Flow and pressure d
