Protective equipment as treatment for stereotypic hand mouthing: sensory extinction or punishment effects?

We examined the effects of noncontingent and contingent protective equipment as treatment for self-injurious hand mouthing exhibited by 2 individuals with profound mental retardation. Results of a functional analysis assessment revealed that neither subject's self-injury was maintained by social reinforcement: One subject's self-injury was cyclical in nature; the other's occurred during all assessment conditions but most frequently when left alone. In the noncontingent-equipment condition, oven mitts were placed on the individual's hands at the beginning of a session and remained on throughout

Independent Heritability of Aversive Learning Influences on Cocaine-Seeking and Punishment Resistance in Rats.

Cocaine produces widely recognized rewarding effects but also produces aversive effects that occur several minutes after rewarding effects dissipate. Prior work shows these aversive effects are particularly strong in some animals, in whom they produce conditioned avoidance effects that reduce overall cocaine-seeking. The sources of these individual variations are largely unknown, but we found evidence for contributions from heritable influences. Using outbred male and female Sprague Dawley and heterogeneous stock rats, we found that offspring of individuals expressing higher versus lower level

Role of serotonin neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus in heroin self-administration and punishment.

One hallmark of substance use disorder is continued drug use despite negative consequences. When drug-taking behavior is punished with aversive stimuli, i.e. footshock, rats can also be categorized into punishment-resistant or compulsive vs. punishment-sensitive or non-compulsive phenotypes. The serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) system modulates responses to both reward and punishment. The goal of the current study was to examine punishment phenotypes in heroin self-administration and to determine the role of dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) 5-HT neurons in both basal and punished heroin self-ad

A study on the subjectivity of South Korean parents regarding corporal punishment in early childhood.

BACKGROUND: We conducted this study after South Korea abolished parental disciplinary rights in 2021. OBJECTIVE: This study identifies the characteristics of parental perceptions regarding types of corporal punishment administered to children by discovering the in-depth subjective structure of perceptions. PARTICIPANTS: We recruited 40 participants (parents with children aged two to six years) after posting a notice on the bulletin boards of infant nursing and education institutions in Seoul. METHODS: The study employed Q methodology. The research procedure involved 40 Q-samples (selected f

Toddlers' expectations of corporal third-party punishments against the non-defender puppet.

Recent research has demonstrated that toddlers expect individuals to approach and reward those who defend a victim from an aggressor rather than those who refuse to do so. This work focused on toddlers' expectations of corporal third-party punishments trought various actions, such as hitting with a stick or repelling someone who refused to defend a social partner following aggression. Using a violation of expectation paradigm (VoE), three experiments were carried out to investigate whether 21-month-olds expect others to apply different kinds of corporal punishments against the non-defender pup

Modulation of cognitive flexibility by reward and punishment in BALB/cJ and BALB/cByJ mice.

Learning from feedback is one of the key mechanisms within cognitive flexibility, which is needed to react swiftly to constantly changing environments. The motivation to change behavior is highly dependent on the expectancy of positive (reward) or negative (punishment) feedback. Individuals with conduct disorder (CD) with high callous unemotional traits show decreased sensitivity to negative feedback and increased reward seeking. Previous studies have modeled traits associated with CD (i.e. heightened aggression and anti-social behavior) in BALB/cJ mice (compared to the BALB/cByJ mouse as cont

Gender-Specific Differences in Corporal Punishment and Children's Perceptions of Their Mothers' and Fathers' Parenting.

Corporal punishment is a widespread phenomenon and a common malformation of parenting. Gender is a core category of social order and family structure. Gender-specific differences in parenting and violent behavior have been studied for many years. Yet, relatively little is known about the impact of gender interactions on parent-to-child physical violence or the impact of such violence on children's perceptions of their parents' behavior. This study used data collected from 618 students in academic institutions in northern Israel to examine the relationship between different gender interactions

Justice at any cost? The impact of cost-benefit salience on criminal punishment judgments.

This study investigated the effect of cost-benefit salience on simulated criminal punishment judgments. In two vignette-based survey experiments, we sought to identify how the salience of decision costs influences laypeople's punishment judgments. In both experiments (N1  = 109; N2  = 398), undergraduate participants made sentencing judgments with and without explicit information about the direct, material costs of incarceration. Using a within-subjects design, Experiment 1 revealed that increasing the salience of incarceration costs mitigated punishments. However, when costs were not made sal

Children's experiences of corporal punishment: A qualitative study in an urban township of South Africa.

Exposure to violence is a serious mental and public health issue. In particular, children exposed to violence are at risk for poor developmental outcomes and physical and mental health problems. One area that has been shown to increase the risk for poor outcomes is the use of corporal punishment as a discipline method. While researchers are starting to ask children directly about their experiences of violence, there is limited research with children about their perspectives on physical punishment, particularly in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). This paper begins to address this gap by

Effects of reward and punishment on brain activations associated with inhibitory control in cigarette smokers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Susceptibility to use of addictive substances may result, in part, from a greater preference for an immediate small reward relative to a larger delayed reward or relative insensitivity to punishment. This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study examined the neural basis of inhibiting an immediately rewarding stimulus to obtain a larger delayed reward in smokers. We also investigated whether punishment could modulate inhibitory control. DESIGN: The Monetary Incentive Go/NoGo (MI-Go/NoGo) task was administered that provided three types of reward outcomes continge

Risk Taking and Sensitivity to Punishment in Children with ADHD, ODD, ADHD+ODD, and Controls.

We used the Balloon Analog Risk Task (BART) to examine risk taking and sensitivity to punishment, two relevant aspects of behavioral inhibition, in 203 school-age children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), ADHD+ODD, and controls. Participants earned points on the BART by pumping 30 separate balloons that exploded at variable intervals. No points were earned on a trial when a balloon exploded. The number of pumps across all balloons estimated risk taking and the reduction in pumps following balloon explosions was interpreted as an indicat

Self-serving punishment of a common enemy creates a public good in reef fishes.

A key challenge for evolutionary biologists is to determine conditions under which individuals benefit from a contribution to public goods [1, 2]. For humans, it has been observed that punishment of free riders may promote contributions [3, 4], but the conditions that lead to stable cooperation based on punishment remain hotly debated [5-8]. Here we present empirical evidence that public goods may emerge as a by-product of self-serving punishment in interactions between coral reef fishes and parasitic saber-tooth blennies that stealthily attack their fish victims from behind to take a bite [9]

Corporal punishment of children in nine countries as a function of child gender and parent gender.

Background. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a global perspective on corporal punishment by examining differences between mothers' and fathers' use of corporal punishment with daughters and sons in nine countries. Methods. Interviews were conducted with 1398 mothers, 1146 fathers, and 1417 children (age range = 7 to 10 years) in China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States. Results. Across the entire sample, 54% of girls and 58% of boys had experienced mild corporal punishment, and 13% of girls and 14% of boys had experienced seve

'Old' and 'new' institutions for persons with mental illness: treatment, punishment or preventive confinement?

Despite countless promises for a better life by national commissions, governments and the international community, there has evolved a vicious cycle of neglect, abandonment, indignity, cruel and inhuman treatment, and punishment of persons with mental illness. This shameful history of benign, and sometimes malignant, neglect of persons with mental illness is well understood, with the deep stigma and unredressed discrimination, the deplorable living conditions, and the physical and social barriers preventing their integration and full participation in society. The maltreatment of this vulnerabl

The medical-legal quandary of healthcare in capital punishment: an ethical dilemma for the anesthesia provider.

The case of Brase v Rees was presented before the US Supreme Court to consider the constitutionality of death by lethal injection as practiced in the state of Kentucky. The 3-drug combination of sodium thiopental, pancuronium bromide, and potassium chloride is a key aspect in question. Capital punishment conflicts with medical and nursing code of ethics preventing providers who are skilled at difficult intravenous (IV) access, assessment of appropriate sedation, and involvement without fear of disciplinary action. Therefore, untrained or undertrained personnel from the prison have been delegat

Testosterone shifts the balance between sensitivity for punishment and reward in healthy young women.

Animal research has demonstrated reductions in punishment sensitivity and enhanced reward dependency after testosterone administration. In humans, elevated levels of testosterone have been associated with violent and antisocial behavior. Interestingly, extreme forms of violent and antisocial behavior can be observed in the psychopath. Moreover, it has been argued that reduced punishment sensitivity and heightened reward dependency are crucially involved in the etiology and maintenance of psychopathy. A task that has been proven to be capable of simulating punishment-reward contingencies is the

High sensitivity to punishment and low impulsivity in obsessive-compulsive patients with hoarding symptoms.

Recent factor-analytic studies involving over 2000 patients have reduced the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) into a few dimensions or potentially overlapping syndromes. Hoarding consistently emerged as a separate factor in all these studies. This study investigated the relationship between OCD symptom dimensions and normal personality traits in a sample of 56 OCD patients. They were administered the Sensitivity to Punishment and Sensitivity to Reward Questionnaire and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, derived from Gray's and Eysenck's personality models, respectively. Anticonflict effect of caffeine: investigation by punishment and hypertonic NaCl solution procedures in mice.

Anticonflict effects of caffeine and diazepam were investigated by two procedures in water-deprived mice; punishment procedure in which the water drinking was suppressed by an electric foot shock, and hypertonic NaCl solution procedure in which the mouse was given 2% NaCl solution in place of tap water to suppress the drinking. Single administration of caffeine (1, 3, 10 and 30 mg/kg) and diazepam (0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 mg/kg), and combined administration of caffeine (10 mg/kg) plus diazepam (1 mg/kg) were conducted. The mouse's drinking behavior was measured for 40 min immediately after each dru

Effect of minor tranquilizers, tryptamine antagonists and amphetamine on behavior punished by brain stimulation.

Earlier observations have shown that septal lesions released operant responding punished by foot-shock, but did not change behavior punished by electrical stimulation of the dorsal periaqueductal gray (DPAG) substance of the rat brain. In contrast, chlordiazepoxide facilitated both kinds of punished responding. In order to further study the mechanism of brain stimulation punishment, dose-response curves of two minor tranquilizers, chlordiazepoxide and pentobarbital, of two tryptamine antagonists, methysergide and cyproheptadine as well as of amphetamine on lever-pressing behavior of rats maint
