Intrapuparial Development of Sarconesia Chlorogaster (Diptera: Calliphoridae) for Postmortem Interval Estimation (PMI).

Sarconesia chlorogaster (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is an endemic blow fly species of forensic importance in South America, and whose duration of pupal development is about 70% of the total immature development time. Therefore, morphological changes during this stage, if refined, may provide greater accuracy and reliability in the calculation of minimum postmortem interval. Considering the importance of this species, the main objective of this work was to identify and describe temporal intrapuparial morphological changes of S. chlorogaster. The development of S. chlorogaster reared on

Effects of co-occurrence and intra- and interspecific interactions between Drosophila suzukii and Zaprionus indianus.

In drosophilids, competition and coexistence can impact survivorship, growth, and reproductive output. Here, we evaluated direct competition between two co-occurring fruit flies, the spotted-wing drosophila Drosophila suzukii and the African fig fly Zaprionus indianus, comparing results from field collections with laboratory experiments. Field collections were conducted to evaluate co-occurrence between species. In the laboratory, different densities of eggs of each species were provided an artificial diet, and intra- and interspecific densities were evaluated regarding biological traits such

Morphological changes in the tracheal system associated with light organs of the firefly Photinus pyralis (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) across life stages.

Oxygen is an important and often limiting reagent of a firefly's bioluminescent chemical reaction. Therefore, the development of the tracheal system and its subsequent modification to support the function of firefly light organs are key to understanding this process. We employ micro-CT scanning, 3D rendering, and confocal microscopy to assess the abdominal tracheal system in Photinus pyralis from the external spiracles to the light organ's internal tracheal brush, a feature named here for the first time. The abdominal spiracles in firefly larvae and pupae are of the biforous type, with a filte

Partiti-like viruses from African armyworm increase larval and pupal mortality of a novel host: the Egyptian cotton leafworm.

BACKGROUND: The general principle of using microbes from one species to manage a different pest species has a clear precedent in the large-scale release of mosquitoes carrying a Wolbachia bacterium derived from Drosophila flies. New technologies will facilitate the discovery of microbes that can be used in a similar way. Previously, we found three novel partiti-like viruses in the African armyworm (Spodoptera exempta). To investigate further the utility and consistency of host shift of insect viruses as a potential pest management tool, we tested the interaction between the partiti-like viruse

New findings on the male reproductive system and spermatozoa of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is one of the most important arbovirus vectors, characterized by its widespread distribution and exceptional reproductive capacity. This study reexamines the male reproductive system (MRS) of this species, focusing on its morphology throughout post-embryonic development and the structure of its spermatozoa. METHODS: We analyzed the MRS of A. aegypti in the larval L4, pupal, and adult stages using bright-field light microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Spermatozoa measurements were made using the ImageJ software. RESULT

In vivo and in vitro activity of venom from the endoparasitic wasp Pimpla turionellae (L.) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae).

The biological activity of venom from Pimpla turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) was examined in vivo toward larvae and pupae of Galleriae mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and in vitro toward bacterial and fungal cultures, as well as cultured insect cells. Pupae of G. mellonella were far more susceptible to the venom than larvae. At low doses of venom [0.1 venom reservoir equivalents (VRE)], pupal abdominal mobility was inhibited within 30 min, and by 24 h, all pupae injected with venom concentrations >0.5 VRE were completely paralyzed. These same doses of venom resulted in an i

Effect of egg irradiation on development and sterility of wild-type and Wolbachia trans-infected Aedes aegypti mosquito vectors.

Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT) or a combination of the two has become alternative promising vector control approaches. In order to apply these approaches, the targeted mosquitoes need to be sterilized and released. So far, the irradiation of mosquitoes has been conducted at the pupae or adult stages. In this study, we investigated the possibility of applying X-ray irradiation at the egg stage and also assessed the effect on the development and sterility of both wild-type and Wolbachia trans-infected Aedes aegypti mosquito vectors. The eggs of both wild-type

Effects of BmKIT 3 R gene transfer on pupal development of Bombyx mori Linnaeus using a Gal4/UAS binary transgenic system.

The pupal stage of the silkworm Bombyx mori Linnaeus lasts for approximately two weeks. However, prolongation of pupal duration would reduce the labor required to process and dry fresh cocoons. This study investigated the effects of BmKIT(3)(R) gene (from the Chinese scorpion Buthus martensii Karsch) transfer on the pupal development of B. mori using a Gal4/UAS binary transgenic system. Gal4 driven by a pupa-specific promoter BmWCP4 (from a B. mori wing-cuticle protein gene) or PDP (from a B. mori cocoonase gene), and BmKIT(3)(R) driven by a UAS cis-acting element were used to construct novel

An urban epidemic of human myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis in French Guiana.

We report the onset of an urban epidemic of human myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis. To our knowledge, this is the first urban epidemic described for D. hominis. The epidemic was most likely related to exceptional weather conditions and notably high rainfall in January 2000, which may have facilitated the maturation of the pupae.

Active constituent nonacosane from Sphaeranthus indicus (Asterales: Asteraceae) leaves as a potent larvicidal agent against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) and Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquitoes are major carriers of diseases such as dengue, lymphatic filariasis, malaria, chikungunya, and Japanese encephalitis, as they feed on blood and act as ectoparasites. This study focuses on the effectiveness of a plant-derived insecticide, specifically the hexane extract from Sphaeranthus indicus leaves, against Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. By conducting phytochemical extraction, fractionation, and spectroscopic analysis, ten fractions were isolated. One of these fractions showed significant mosquito-killing activity, with nonacosane identified as the primary a

Six forensic entomology cases: description and commentary.

Insects are known to be useful in estimating the postmortem interval (PMI). Here several cases are reported which show that a wide range of applications in medicolegal questions and hygiene together or apart from estimating the PMI can be answered by use of forensic entomology techniques, including close observation of larval development. Case 1 describes how blowfly larvae fell from a putrefied corpse, hid, and finally emerged from pupae three months after disinfection and renovation. In case 2, the entomological state of the decomposed corpse of a heroin user is described. Case 3 deals with

Defective autophagy in a fibroin secretion-deficient silkworm mutant.

The silkworm Bombyx mori is an economically important insect for silk production. Its silk glands are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of silk proteins. The naked pupa (Nd), a fibroin heavy chain mutant strain of silkworm, was found to exhibit severe atrophy, degeneration of the posterior silk gland (PSG), and abnormal secretion of fibroin proteins, thereby producing little or no silk. Here, we found that the autophagic marker Atg8-PE was upregulated through the target of rapamycin complex 1 signaling pathway in Nd. However, as autophagy substrates, SQSTM1/p62 and ubiquitinated prot

Toxicity of seaweed-synthesized silver nanoparticles against the filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatus and its impact on predation efficiency of the cyclopoid crustacean Mesocyclops longisetus.

Nearly 1.4 billion people in 73 countries worldwide are threatened by lymphatic filariasis, a parasitic infection that leads to a disease commonly known as elephantiasis. Filariasis is vectored by mosquitoes, with special reference to the genus Culex. The main control tool against mosquito larvae is represented by treatments with organophosphates and insect growth regulators, with negative effects on human health and the environment. Recently, green-synthesized nanoparticles have been proposed as highly effective larvicidals against mosquito vectors. In this research, we attempted a reply to t

Efficacy of a floating sustained release formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. israelensis in controlling Culex quinquefasciatus larvae in polluted water habitats.

Larvicidal efficacy and residual activity of a floating sustained release formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. israelensis (Bti) was tested in polluted water habitats against Culex quinquefasciatus, the vector of bancroftian filariasis, breeding in cesspools and cesspits. A total of 25 habitats having 65 m(2) water surface area with C. quinquefasciatus immatures were treated with the formulation at the rate of 15 kg/ha. For comparison, in another area, 18 habitats with a water surface area of 70 m(2) were kept untreated. Evaluation was continued up to 179 days with three rounds of Bti ap

Life table characteristics of Aedes aegypti (Diptera:Culicidae) from Saudi Arabia.

Aedes aegypti (= Stegomyia aegypti) mosquito is a world vector of important arboviral diseases like dengue and Rift Valley fever. Despite its wide distribution in the western and southern regions of Saudi Arabia, where dengue outbreaks have occurred, its ecology is largely unknown. In this study we report on the main life table developmental attributes of a laboratory colony of Ae. aegypti reared from field-collected larvae from Madinah Province, west of Saudi Arabia. Females were maintained on daily blood meal and sugar. The female fecundity was ~62 eggs/female at an overall rate of 72% hatch
