Tropical pyomyositis associated with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense infection in a Europid.

A 29-year-old European woman became infected with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense in the Luangwa valley, Zambia. Six days after the initial presentation of this infection she developed evidence of tropical pyomyositis (TP). These diseases, both of which are rare in Europids, were satisfactorily treated. The pathogenesis of TP, which is nearly always caused by Staphylococcus aureus, is undetermined. It seems possible that in this case either (i) both infections were introduced simultaneously by a tsetse-fly bite, or (ii) T. b. rhodesiense produced multiple focal necroses in skeletal muscles whic

Extensive pyomyositis secondary to paronychia-related MRSA infection: A case report.

RATIONALE: Pyomyositis is characterized by an insidious and multifactorial inflammatory process, which is often caused by hematogenous pathogen. Predisposing risk factors include immunodeficiency, diabetes, malignancy, or trauma. The spectrum of clinical presentation depends on disease severity, typically presented by fever and hip pain. We hereby present a case with extensive pyomyositis secondary to chronic paronychia infection. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 14-year-old immunocompetent male presented with fever and hip pain. The patient was initially surveyed for common infectious etiologies prior to

Pyomyositis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Pyomyositis is classified into two main types: tropical and non-tropical. Non-tropical pyomyositis occurs among various immunocompromised patients, and Staphylococcus aureus has been reported as the most common pathogen. Pyomyositis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae is uncommon, and has not been previously reported after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Here, we report a unique case with pyomyositis caused by S. pneumoniae in the bilateral erector spinae muscles 34 months after allo-HSCT. The patient had an initial clinical response following the administration

[Multiple pyomyositis and prostatic abscess in a patient with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus].

Pyomyositis is a purulent infection of skeletal muscle that typically occurs in tropical climates and is more common in children and immunosuppressed patients. The most frequent causative agent is Staphylococcus aureus. Infections caused by this microorganism pose a significant challenge in clinical practice, especially in patients with comorbidities that predispose them to severe complications. We present the case of a 50-year-old male with a history of poorly controlled diabetes, obesity, and recurrent furunculosis, admitted for multiple pyomyositis caused by community-acquired methicillin-r

Streptococcus agalactiae pyomyositis in a patient with primary biliary cholangitis: A case report.

Pyomyositis is an uncommon clinical scenario; it is usually associated with predisposing factors, including poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, trauma history, and immunocompromise. We discuss the case of an elderly woman with a 20-year history of diabetes mellitus and remissive breast cancer after modified radical mastectomy and subsequent chemotherapy 28 years previously. The patient presented with severe shoulder pain and gradual swelling. After examination, pyomyositis was diagnosed and debridement surgery was performed. Culture of the wound samples showed the growth of Streptococcus agal

Obturator pyomyositis and labium majus cellulitis: A case report and literature review.

Pyomyositis is a rare, subacute, deep bacterial infection of the skeletal muscle. When treatment is delayed, pyomyositis causes abscess formation and progresses to sepsis; therefore, its early diagnosis is important. However, the clinical presentation and laboratory findings of pyomyositis are not specific; hence, diagnosis often takes time. We encountered the case of a girl with obturator pyomyositis and redness and swelling of the labium majus, which we considered as potentially important symptoms for distinguishing obturator pyomyositis from septic hip arthritis. An 8-year-old Japanese girl

Piriformis Pyomyositis Presenting as Migratory Hip to Knee Pain: A Case Report.

CASE: The authors report a case of piriformis pyomyositis in a teenage female patient with fever and left hip pain. Her pain migrated to the knee with concurrent near resolution of hip pain. Imaging revealed an abscess in the left piriformis with pus tracking along the sciatic nerve sheath. This was complicated by internal iliac vein thrombosis and an embolus to the lung. Open drainage was performed, followed by outpatient intravenous cloxacillin and oral warfarin, with complete resolution of symptoms. CONCLUSION: Piriformis pyomyositis is a rare condition with varying presentations. The thre

MRSA-pyomyositis in a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia after intensive chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: A case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-pyomyositis in association with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is reported. MRSA-sepsis developed in a 51-year-old Japanese man with AML, during the neutropenic period after high-dose 1-beta-d-arabinofuranosylcytosine (Ara-C). Although the MRSA-sepsis initially improved with arbekacin sulfate (ABK) administration, a high fever recurred with left thigh pain despite recovery of the neutrophil count after ABK was stopped. A computed tomographic (CT) scan showed a low-density area in the left quadriceps femoris muscle, whic

Nontropical pyomyositis as a cause of subacute, multifocal myalgia in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

We report a case of nontropical pyomyositis in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and disseminated Mycobacterium avium infection, in which severe myalgia was the presenting symptom over several weeks. Multifocal muscle lesions were identified by gallium scanning and magnetic resonance imaging techniques. The epidemiology, possible pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnostic imaging, and therapy are reviewed. Early suspicion of nontropical pyomyositis in severely immunocompromised patients with "cryptic" myalgia is recommended.

Pyomyositis in a patient with progressive systemic sclerosis. Case report and review of the literature.

Pyomyositis has become an increasingly recognized disease in temperate climates. A patient receiving chlorambucil for progressive systemic sclerosis, in whom streptococcal pyomyositis developed, is presented. Magnetic resonance imaging led to the early diagnosis. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of pyomyositis in a patient with scleroderma, and the first association with group G streptococcus infection in an adult. Connective tissue diseases and immunosuppression may emerge as risk factors for the development of this entity.

Pyomyositis as a rare musculoskeletal complication of chickenpox in a pediatric patient case report.

Chickenpox is a common viral infection that mostly affects children from 5 to 9 years old, but it can also occur at any age group. Although typically self-limiting, chickenpox can rarely cause a severe disease and serious complications in approximately 2% of patients. Musculoskeletal complications, though less common, may be both life- and limb-threatening. Clinical manifestations include cellulitis, abscess formation, pyomyositis, necrotizing fasciitis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, gangrene, and toxic shock syndrome. Pyomyositis occurs when bacteria enter muscle tissue and start prolifera

Salmonella gas-forming pyomyositis in an immunocompetent patient: a case report and review.

The primary etiology of pyomyositis is predominantly Staphylococcus aureus, although Gram-negative bacteria may also be involved on rare occasions. The prognosis for pyomyositis caused by Gram-negative bacteria is more unfavorable than that of infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Among Gram-negative bacteria, members of the Enterobacteriaceae family, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, and Salmonella species, have the capacity to produce gas. Gas-forming myositis is a rare phenomenon that primarily affects immunocompromised patients and is associated with a poor prognosis. T

Pectoralis Major Pyomyositis in a Patient With Diabetes: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Pyogenic myositis is a bacterial infection of skeletal muscle that is usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus and is common in tropical regions. Recently, this infection has also been reported in immunocompromised patients in temperate regions. The lower extremities and trunk are most affected, while involvement of the chest wall is rare. We report a case of pectoralis major pyomyositis caused by Morganella morganii in an 82-year-old Japanese man with type 2 diabetes mellitus who had undergone stenting for myocardial infarction. Four months prior to visiting our hospital, the patient became aw

Pelvic Pyomyositis in Childhood: Clinical and Radiological Findings in a Tertiary Pediatric Center.

Pyomyositis (PM) is an infrequent but increasing bacterial infection of the skeletal muscle, with muscles of the pelvis and thigh frequently involved. The diagnosis is often challenging, especially when a deep muscle is affected. We present a single-center pediatric cohort affected by pelvic PM. A retrospective analysis was performed, including children admitted to Meyer Children's Hospital between 2010 and 2020. Demographic, anamnestic, clinical, laboratory, radiological and management data were collected. Forty-seven patients (range 8 days-16.5 years, 66% males) were selected. Pain (64%), fu

Osteomyelitis and pyomyositis due to Staphylococcus aureus in an osteomalacic adult with multiple fractures.

Multifocal osteomyelitis and pyomyositis usually arise from hematogenous dissemination, especially in patients with immunodeficiency, trauma, or injection drug abuse. We report the case of a 75-year-old man with multifocal pyomyositis and osteomyelitis, which were due to Staphylococcus aureus and were presumably related to multiple fractures. The patient had no risk factors for these hematogenous infections. He was treated with antibiotic therapy for about 80 days and drainage of the abscesses. Regarding the cause of his multipe fractures, he was found to have hypophosphatemia and eventually d

Protrusio acetabulae as a sequel to septic arthritis of the hip with obturator internus pyomyositis.

Pyomyositis is defined as a pyogenic infection of skeletal muscles principally caused by Staphylococcus aureus. It can present either primarily without any associated soft tissue or bone infection or secondary to any surrounding or distant infection focus. Hip pericapsular pyomyositis is one of the most common types of primary pyomyositis. Although many cases are increasingly being described both in tropical and temperate climates, there is no published study regarding the sequelae of untreated pericapsular pyomyositis around the hip joint. The purpose of this study is to describe the sequelae
