Pyrolysis behaviors of anaerobic digestion residues in a fixed-bed reactor with rapid infrared heating.

Fast pyrolysis via rapid infrared heating may significantly enhance the heat transfer and suppress the secondary reaction of the volatiles. The effects of various pyrolysis temperatures on pyrolysis behaviors of anaerobic digestion residues (ADR) were studied in this research utilizing a fixed-bed reactor equipped with rapid infrared heating (IH), as well as to compare the pyrolysis products produced by rapid infrared heating (IH) to those produced by conventional electric heating (EH). Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis revealed that pyrolysis of ADR occurred in three decomposition stages. The r

Characterization of modified biochars prepared at low pyrolysis temperature as an efficient adsorbent for atrazine removal.

In this study, biochars (BC, ZnBC, and PBC) produced from wheat straw at relatively lower pyrolysis are successfully fabricated using different pretreatment techniques (without and with ZnCl2 or H3PO4). The specific surface area (SSA), elemental analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) are used to analyze physicochemical properties of unmodified and modified biochars. ZnBC and PBC show higher specific surface area and more micropore structure than pure BC. Kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intra-particle diffusion) as well as isotherm models (Langmuir

Identification and hazard prediction of tattoo pigments by means of pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

The implementation of regulation for tattoo ink ingredients across Europe has generated the need for analytical methods suitable to identify prohibited compounds. Common challenges of this subject are the poor solubility and the lack of volatility for most pigments and polymers applied in tattoo inks. Here, we present pyrolysis coupled to online gas chromatography and electron impact ionization mass spectrometry (py-GC/MS) as quick and reliable tool for pigment identification using both purified pigments and tattoo ink formulations. Some 36 organic pigments frequently used in tattoo inks were

Novel incineration technology integrated with drying, pyrolysis, gasification, and combustion of MSW and ashes vitrification.

The conventional mass burn systems for municipal solid waste (MSW) emit large amount of acidic gases and dioxins as well as heavy metals due to the large excess air ratio. Additionally, the final process residues, bottom ash with potential leachability of heavy metals and fly ash with high level of heavy metals and dioxins, also constitute a major environmental problem. To deal with these issues more effectively, a novel MSW incineration technology was developed in this study. MSW drying, pyrolysis, gasification, incineration, and ash vitrification were achieved as a spectrum of combustion by

Bio-Oil Production from Date Palm Surface Fibers: Thermo-Kinetic and Pyrolysis GC/MS Analysis.

Date palm surface fibers (DPSFs) are abundantly available as municipal and agricultural biomass wastes from date palm trees, especially in the Middle Eastern and North African countries, especially United Arab Emirates. DPSFs are lignocellulosic in nature and therefore have immense potential to be used for bioenergy purposes. This study presents the conversion-dependent pyrolysis behavior, kinetic analysis, and bio-oil qualitative investigation. DPSFs were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis at nonisothermal heating rates of 10-40 °C/min at a temperature range of 20-750 °C. Activation en

CO2-assisted pyrolysis of Mn-loaded biomass for syngas generation and periodate-activating biochar production.

Mn-biochar composite, which incorporates redox-active Mn sites into a carbon scaffold, is an active catalyst for periodate (PI) activation. Nevertheless, its scalable production remains challenging because conventional pyrolysis offers limited energy recovery. Here, Mn-impregnated switchgrass (SG) was pyrolyzed under CO2-assisted conditions to redirect biomass carbon conversion from condensable oxygenates to syngas. The temporal evolution of gaseous products indicated that Mn impregnation into SG promoted syngas generation during CO2-assisted pyrolysis. Correspondingly, analysis of biocrude co

Effectiveness factor analysis for non-isothermal biomass pyrolysis: a transient model for single pellet systems.

The effectiveness factor (EF) concept is extended for non-catalytic pyrolysis reactions involving no gaseous reactant. A fully transient, non-isothermal model is formulated for a single biomass pellet by incorporating structural evolution, porosity variation, and temperature-dependent properties. The study presented a theoretical analysis of EF for different values of Lewis number (L e), heat of reaction (G factor), Arrhenius number (Ē), Thiele modulus (ϕ), and heating rate (γ). The model was solved using two approaches (i) a numerical solution and (ii) an approximate solution based on the Qua

Roles of CO2 in carbon-negative syngas production from pyrolysis of cellulosic biomass (oat hull).

The biological conversion of biomass into chemicals and biofuels is environmentally beneficial. Nevertheless, it is critical to minimize the inevitable carbon loss by microbial metabolisms such as respiration and cell reproduction. Pyrolysis has gained considerable attention because it enables to utilize all carbons in biomass as the form of syngas, biocrude, and biochar. In this study, oat hull (OH), one of the by-products generated during cereal processing, was selected as a model biomass. To impart the sustainability of pyrolysis process, carbon dioxide (CO2) was used as a partial oxidant.

Evaluating biochar extraction from waste tree stumps in different pyrolysis systems using life cycle analysis.

With the growing global attention to climate change and reducing environmental pollution, it is necessary to look for sustainable technologies that help curtail carbon dioxide emissions and create useful products from waste. The hypothesis of this study was that recycling wood waste reduces the negative impact on the environment, and the biochar obtained during processing could be used to create secondary, environmentally friendly products. This study evaluated the environmental effects of biochar production using two pyrolysis reactors, UMT-3 PLUS EcoTeploOtbor (SC-1) and BIO-KILN-1 (SC-2), a

[Identification of polysaccharide binding materials used in cultural relics by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry].

Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) is suitable for the qualitative analysis of natural organic materials in cultural relics owing to its ability of accurately and rapidly identifying trace quantities of organic components in samples. In the present study, pyrolytic components of starch and peach gum, which are commonly used in ancient Chinese cultural relics such as calligraphic works, paintings, architecture, and objects, as well as gum Arabic, which is commonly used in western cultural relics, were systematically characterized using Py-GC/MS. As polysaccharide material

Performance enhancement through post-treatments of CdS-sensitized solar cells fabricated by spray pyrolysis deposition.

The CdS-sensitized solar cells (CdS-SSC) were fabricated by spray pyrolysis deposition (SPD) method. The performance of the cells was greatly improved through post-treatments that included thermal oxidation at 500 degrees C for 30 min in an air atmosphere and subsequent chemical etching by 40 mM aqueous HCl solution at room temperature for 30 min, as compared to as-deposited CdS-SSC. The CdS-SSC in a I(-)/I(3)(-) electrolyte system was resulted in the improvement of J(sc) (3.3 --> 5.2 mA/cm(2)), V(oc) (697 --> 758 mV), FF (41.4% --> 46.9%), and (0.95% --> 1.84%). Similarly, the efficiency of C

Pyrolysis and Steam Reforming in Series of Footwear Waste to Hydrogen-Rich Syngas and Char for CO2 Adsorption.

Footwear manufacturing generates large volumes of heterogeneous polymeric waste. In this context, thermochemical routes offer a pathway to convert this waste into hydrogen-rich syngas and value-added solid products (char). This study presents a proof-of-concept for the integrated valorization of mixed footwear waste via pyrolysis and steam reforming in series for hydrogen production and waste valorization. Footwear waste was pyrolyzed and the resulting volatiles were steam-reformed in a two-stage system, while reforming temperature (700, 800, and 900 °C) and steam-to-carbon ratio (2.5, 7, and
