BACKGROUND: Racial disparities in birth outcomes represent a significant public health concern in the United States. Factors associated with racism have been posited as a mechanism underlying these disparities. Yet, findings from previous studies are mixed and based on small, geographically limited samples. This study aims to examine the relationship between experiences of racism and preterm birth in a population-based sample and to explore the role of adequacy of prenatal care within that relationship.
METHODS: Data from the 2004 through 2012 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System were

The current study examined the relationship of internalized racism to glucose intolerance in a population of Afro-Caribbean women aged 18 to 55. Also of interest was whether this relationship would be differentially influenced by the type of body fat distribution or confounded by the level of hostility. A total of 244 women were selected from a systematic sample of households on the island of Dominica, West Indies. Demographic data together with information on internalized racism were collected by questionnaire. Anthropometric information and fasting blood glucose were also measured. Women wit

BACKGROUND: Nurses form the backbone of the Canadian healthcare system, with the largest workforce representation across various care settings (Health Canada, 2024). The purpose of this narrative review is to critically examine from the literature the structural and systemic challenges experienced by Black Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), within the broader context of the ongoing national nursing crisis. While RPNs form a significant portion of the nursing workforce, Black RPNs encounter unique and compounding barriers due to anti-Black racism (ABR) and systemic inequities. RPNs, who are in

For some Black American adolescents, the chronic stress associated with structural racism may divert resources supporting executive functioning. For other Black American adolescents, those exposed to structural racism may experience increased executive functioning as they recalibrate their behaviors and cognitions to adapt to challenging conditions. This heterogeneity in the association between structural racism and executive functioning may reflect differences in pubertal timing. Specifically, youth's pubertal timing may condition how structural racism is associated with their executive funct

Black women in the United States experience inequities in perinatal and neonatal mortality, contributing to psychological stress during and after perinatal loss. This analysis drew on a subset of interviews from a larger qualitative dataset and explored the experiences of 22 Black women who experienced perinatal loss and were pregnant or had given birth after a loss, focusing on feeling unheard by healthcare providers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data were analyzed using descriptive coding and inductive thematic analysis. Three themes emerged: unheard and dismissed concerns,

The negative oral health outcomes of disadvantaged racial groups have been well-documented, as racial disparity in oral health persists over time and in different locations1. However, it is important to note that skin colour has no biological meaning, and the observed differences can be physiological expressions of social injustice such as racism. Aim: The aim of this study was to analyse the association between levels of modern racism (camouflaged prejudice and affirmation of differences) and sociodemographic characteristics of Brazilian dental students. Material and Method: An epidemiologica

Despite Americans' recent heightened awareness of racial inequality, anti-Asian racism at work remains underrecognized and largely unaddressed. In this research, we aim to understand why White bystander coworkers may fail to confront anti-Asian racism. Integrating the moral exclusion perspective and research on racial positions, we propose that due to perceiving Asian Americans as more foreign than other non-White coworkers, White coworkers are less likely to feel anger and engage in confrontation when witnessing anti-Asian racism at work. We first conducted a survey study (Study 1), demonstra

BACKGROUND: Gendered racism (unique discrimination targeting intersecting racial/ethnic and gender identities) is associated with pregnancy-specific stress among Black and Latina American Women. Gendered racism's associations with perinatal mental health are not understood, despite perinatal mental health's impact on maternal and infant outcomes. Social support boosts mental health and may buffer against discrimination, yet gendered racism may diminish support. We examined gendered racism's associations with perinatal anxiety and depressive symptoms, and whether social support moderates and/or

This article provides a summative program evaluation to describe the development, implementation, and outcomes of a grassroots Black liberation and anti-racism initiative, Academics for Black Survival and Wellness. The initiative was founded by Dr. Pearis Jean (formerly Bellamy; graduate student at the time) and Dr. Della V. Mosley (an assistant professor at the time) in response to the events of 2020. The authors used a general inductive approach to analyze archival data from the initiative to identify the program outcomes. Academics for Black Survival and Wellness had two primary program out

OBJECTIVES: Black women in the United States experience disproportionately high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) and persistent barriers to care. Guided by decolonial frameworks, this study examines how systemic racism shaped Black women's help-seeking during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: This qualitative inquiry is part of a mixed-methods R01 study conducted in the Upper Midwest. Between 2021 and 2023, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 28 urban Black women who experienced IPV during the pandemic. Participants were recruited through community agencies using purposive and

BACKGROUND: Residential segregation, both economic, racial and ethnic, is a social determinant of health that contributes to disparities in breast cancer outcomes. The objective of this study was to examine the association of economic and racial and ethnic residential segregation, as measured by the Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE), with breast cancer stage at presentation.
METHODS: In this retrospective two-institution study, we included patients with stage I-IV breast cancer from 2005 to 2017. Using five-year estimates from the American Community Survey (2009-2013), five ICE var

OBJECTIVE: To use a novel measure of systemic racism to examine its relationship with Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) to Non-Hispanic White (NHW) racial disparities in infant mortality across U.S. counties.
STUDY DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study, a composite, multi-dimensional measure of systemic racism at the county level was developed using confirmatory factor analysis based on indicators across five dimensions of systemic racism. Using linear regression analysis, we examined the relationship between the systemic racism factor scores and the NHB to NHW racial disparities in county-level infan

INTRODUCTION: Racism is a critical social determinant of health because it can have a direct impact on health and well-being, as well as infiltrate systems, policies, and practices. Few studies have explored the similarities and differences of experiences with racism and health between different minoritized groups. The objective of this paper is to examine how racism influences life experiences from the perspectives of Asian & Pacific Islander, Black, Latina, and Middle Eastern women.
METHODS: Eleven online racially/ethnically homogeneous focus groups with a total of 52 participants were cond

OBJECTIVE: The clinical application of race-adjusted algorithms may perpetuate health inequities. We assessed the impact of the vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) calculator, which was revised in 2021 to address concerns about equity. The original algorithm factored race and ethnicity and gave lower VBAC probabilities to Black and Hispanic patients.
METHODS: From 2019 to 2020, we conducted a multi-site, ethnographic study consisting of interviews and audio recordings of 14 prenatal visits. We used grounded theory to describe the social processes of racialization.
FINDINGS: Across 4 sites, 1

Racism, segregation, and inequality contribute to health outcomes and drive health disparities across the life course, including for newborn infants and their families. In this review, we address their effects on the health and well-being of newborn infants and their families with a focus on preterm birth. We discuss three causal pathways: increased risk; lower-quality care; and socioeconomic disadvantages that persist into infancy, childhood, and beyond. For each pathway, we propose specific interventions and research priorities that may remedy the adverse effects of racism, segregation, and

Racism and sexism are associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD), yet few studies examine their role in co-occurring PTSD/SUD. Through qualitative interviews with 23 people of color with PTSD/SUD, we found that racism and sexism influence the onset of men and women of color's PTSD/SUD in gendered ways. Women reported that sexism played a role in their exposure to sexual violence, and that concerns around being blamed or dismissed when reporting sexual trauma because of their gender and race, they used substances to cope. Men reported that racism rende

While there has been growing attention to research on structural racism and health inequities and the importance of naming structural racism as a driver of population health inequities, research focusing on structural racism and intimate partner violence (IPV) in United States (US)-based immigrant communities of color is lacking. This scoping review examined existing literature that names, operationalizes, and attributes structural racism as a determinant of IPV, and/or its health and social consequences among immigrant communities of color in the US. A search of eight databases (e.g., Medline

The exposure and impact of racism are a critical issue among historically marginalized youth of color that requires targeted interventions. The goal of this paper is to examine initial feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness from a school-based intervention pilot study designed to increase awareness and skills to combat the consequences of racism, in all forms, among adolescents from Black, Native, Asian, Latine, and other historically marginalized communities. TRANSFORM is an 11-session group-based intervention. Fifteen youth (Mage = 15.3 years old, SDage = 1.8 years old; 53

South Asian (SA) communities in Ontario, Canada experienced disproportionately higher rates of COVID-19 infection. Moreover, these communities also faced racism fueled by COVID-19-related misinformation and xenophobic sentiments that placed blame on them for virus transmission. The aim of this research was to understand, from the perspective of local SA communities, the causes behind higher incidences of COVID-19. SA adults (N = 25) participated in a focus group (N = 3) investigating experiences during the early stages of the pandemic. Data, interpreted through the lens of the Public Health Cr

Drinking water and sanitation services in high-income countries typically bring widespread health and other benefits to their populations. Yet gaps in this essential public health infrastructure persist, driven by structural inequalities, racism, poverty, housing instability, migration, climate change, insufficient continued investment, and poor planning. Although the burden of disease attributable to these gaps is mostly uncharacterised in high-income settings, case studies from marginalised communities and data from targeted studies of microbial and chemical contaminants underscore the need
