Non-contact screening system with two microwave radars in the diagnosis of sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.

There are two key problems in applying Doppler radar to a diagnosis system for sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome. The first is noise associated with body movement and the second is the body position in bed and the change of the sleeping posture. We propose a new automatic gain control and a real-time radar-output channel selection method which is based on a spectrum shape analysis. There are three types of sleep apnea: central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea and mixed sleep apnea. In this paper we paid attention to the obstructive sleep apnea and attempted to detect the disorder of corrugated

Paraplegia is not a diagnosis: Spinal tuberculosis deserves a place on the clinical radar screen: Awakening call to clinicians.

Disseminated Tuberculosis(TB) occurs through lymphohaematogenous dissemination of M. tuberculosis. Although it is more common in young children and those who are having risk factors like having acquired or innate immunodeficiency, weak immune system being on immunosuppressive treatments; it can also occur in immunocompetent indviduals with heavy load of infection. Inhalation being the commonest mode of entry of the pathogen results in pulmonary tuberculosis being the commonest seat of primary infection, other systems commonly involved as extra-pulmonary sites are lymphnodes, bone, brain, perito

[Early referral of first line patients suspected of axial spondyloarthritis: the Belgian results of the RADAR study].

Currently, there is a 5 to 7 years gap between the first symptoms and the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis. A better patient referral might reduce this gap and accelerate the adequate treatment implementation. The study objective was to compare 2 referral strategies used in first line. In Belgium, 208 referral physicians assigned to 16 rheumatology centres were randomized to refer chronic back pain patients (with onset <45 years) using 1 of the 2 referral strategies: Strategy 1 :1 of 3 criteria (inflammatory back pain, HLA-B27, sacroiliitis on imaging); or Strategy 2: 2 of6 criteria (IBP in

Chitosan-derived carbon/chain-like CoNi composite aerogels for efficient electromagnetic absorption, radar stealth and thermal insulation.

With the increasingly severe problem of electromagnetic radiation pollution, pure carbon aerogels struggle to achieve a wide absorption bandwidth, strong absorption intensity and multifunctional integration at a low filler loading ratio. In this work, chitosan-derived carbon/chain-like CoNi composite aerogels with low bulk density (0.0949 ∼ 0.1019 g/cm3) were prepared by using biomass chitosan as carbon source through solvothermal reaction, solution blending and high-temperature carbonization. The introduction of the chain-like magnetic component not only optimized the impedance matching, but

Real-Time Fall Detection in Indoor Environments Using FMCW Radar and Lightweight Ensemble CNN on Edge Devices.

Falls are a leading cause of injury and mortality among the elderly, particularly indoors where privacy concerns limit real-time monitoring. This study developed a privacy-preserving, real-time fall detection system using a frequency-modulated continuous wave radar sensor and a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture deployed on an edge device. To address the limitations of wearable and vision-based methods, the system leverages contactless radar sensing and an ensemble of two independent CNN models, namely, a base model designed to capture the entire fall sequence for high

RPT-Fusion: A Time-Lag-Aware Quality-Adaptive Radar-Camera Fusion Framework for Water-Surface Object Detection.

Water-surface object detection remains challenging under strong reflections, wave disturbances, adverse weather, low illumination, and distant or small targets, which can severely degrade or obscure discriminative visual cues. Although radar-camera fusion provides complementary geometric and motion information, sparse and uncertain radar observations may introduce unreliable cues, while camera-radar temporal asynchrony can further reduce cross-modal spatial consistency. To address these issues, this paper proposes Radar Prior and Time-Lag-Aware Quality-Adaptive Fusion (RPT-Fusion), a radar-cam

Automated detection of pipe water leaks under paved surfaces with machine learning analysis of satellite radar data.

Growing water shortages from droughts and climate change make leak detection in distribution networks increasingly important. Pipeline leaks can waste large volumes of water and cause progressive damage to sourrounding infrastructure if not identified quickly, yet traditional inspections are localized and periodic, providing only brief snapshots of system conditions. This limited approach is inefficient for large networks, whereas above-the-ground remote sensing offers faster, broader, and more continuous monitoring. Previous studies have used optical imagery to infer leaks on bare soil surfac

Microwave Radar Sensing for Non-Invasive Intra-Abdominal Pressure Monitoring: A Simulation-Based Analysis with Phantom Testing.

BACKGROUND: Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) has recently been recognized as a new vital sign in critically ill patients. Microwave reflectometry has been proposed as a potential approach for non-invasive IAP measurement. However, systematic investigation on how individual anatomical and geometric factors influence changes in the microwave reflection response of the abdominal compartment is limited. Complementary information regarding illumination frequency and specific absorption rate (SAR) also warrants consideration. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to advance the current knowledge on using micro

Quantifying myocardial repolarization instability using wearable radar-based non-skin-contact estimation of the JT variability index.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Myocardial repolarization instability measured by electrocardiography (ECG) as the QT variability index (QTVI) predicts arrhythmic risk. This proof-of-concept study aims to validate a non-skin-contact wearable radar-based technique for monitoring myocardial repolarization instability. METHODS: QTVI by ECG (normalized QT variability to normalized heart rate variability) was compared to the analogous J-point-to-T-end variability index (JTVI) by ECG. Simultaneous 2-minute ECG and wearable radar recordings acquired under controlled, seated conditions were analysed using an in

Non-Contact Fall Detection System Using 4D Imaging Radar for Elderly Safety Based on a CNN Model.

Progressive global aging has increased the number of elderly individuals living alone. The consequent rise in fall accidents has worsened physical injuries, reduced the quality of life, and increased medical expenses. Existing wearable fall-detection devices may cause discomfort, and camera-based systems raise privacy concerns. Here, we propose a non-contact fall-detection system that integrates 4D imaging radar sensors with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect falls through real-time monitoring and visualization using a web-based dashboard and Unity engine-based avatar, along wit

Effective fall detection and post-fall breath rate tracking using a low-cost CW Doppler radar sensor.

Existing low-cost Doppler radar-based fall detection systems encounter challenges due to false alarms and the absence of post-fall health tracking, significantly impacting their accuracy and overall compatibility for fall detection. This paper presents a cost-effective, robust solution for a fall detection system with the post-fall health tracking facility using a 3.18 GHz continuous-wave Doppler radar sensor. The experimental data acquisition is conducted in-house under the guidance of a healthcare expert, involving various activities such as standing, sitting, sleeping, running, walking, fal

Design of a Millimeter-Wave Radar Remote Monitoring System for the Elderly Living Alone Using WIFI Communication.

In response to the current demand for the remote monitoring of older people living alone, a non-contact human vital signs monitoring system based on millimeter wave radar has gradually become the object of research. This paper mainly carried out research regarding the detection method to obtain human breathing and heartbeat signals using a frequency modulated continuous wave system. We completed a portable millimeter-wave radar module for wireless communication. The radar module was a small size and had a WIFI communication interface, so we only needed to provide a power cord for the radar mod

Subsurface H2S Detection by a Surface Acoustic Wave Passive Wireless Sensor Interrogated with a Ground Penetrating Radar.

Long-term monitoring of organic pollutants in the soil is a major environmental challenge. We propose to meet this issue by the development of a polymer dedicated to selectively react with H2S, coating surface acoustic wave transducers designed as passive cooperative targets with the compound, and probing their response using Ground Penetrating RADAR, thus providing the capability to monitor the presence of H2S in the subsurface environment. The selectivity is brought by including lead(II) cation in a reticulated polymer matrix which can be deposited as a thin layer on a surface acoustic wave

Fully Polarimetric Radar Cross-Section and High-Resolution Range Profile Co-Modulation via Diversely Time-Modulated Metasurface.

Advanced polarimetric radar systems, capable of capturing the full scattering matrix of targets, present significant challenges to electronic countermeasures (ECM). Although programmable metasurfaces offer a platform for electromagnetic manipulation, existing designs struggle to achieve simultaneous, diverse control over fully polarimetric radar cross section (RCS) and high-resolution range profile (HRRP). To address these limitations, a novel diversely time-modulated metasurface (DTMM) is proposed. The integrated two anti-parallel PIN diodes in each DTMM element enable reconfigurable polariza

Kilowatt-class planar four-way gysel combiner with power-aware impedance optimization for L-band pulsed radar.

This work presents a compact planar four-way Gysel power divider/combiner designed for kilowatt-class coherent power combining in L-band pulsed radar transmitters. Unlike previously reported waveguide and coaxial Gysel architectures, the proposed planar implementation achieves a 3 kW peak output on an RO4003C substrate while maintaining low-loss, highly manufacturable microstrip construction. A power-aware full-wave electromagnetic optimization framework is introduced to refine characteristic impedances and electrical lengths, explicitly accounting for current distribution, thermal dissipation

Early screening tool for developmental delay in infancy: Quantified assessment of movement asymmetry using IR-UWB radar.

In the untact COVID-19 era, the feasibility of a noncontact, impulse-radio ultrawideband (IR-UWB) radar sensor has important medical implications. Premature birth is a major risk factor for brain injury and developmental delay; therefore, early intervention is crucial for potentially achieving better developmental outcomes. Early detection and screening tests in infancy are limited to the quantification of differences between normal and spastic movements. This study investigated the quantified asymmetry in the general movements of an infant with hydrocephalus and proposes IR-UWB radar as a nov

Risk Factors for Postoperative Pacemaker Implantation After Rapid Deployment Aortic Valve Replacement: Results from the RADAR Registry.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid deployment aortic valve replacement has been recently introduced in clinical practice. Different studies have reported a significant reduction in surgical times with excellent hemodynamic profiles and short-term results. However, an increase in permanent pacemaker requirements compared with conventional aortic valve replacement has been described. Nevertheless, risk factors for postoperative pacemaker implantation are not well known. The aim of this study is to report our early outcomes with rapid deployment aortic valve replacement within the RADAR Registry, especially foc

Re-Arming the Immunological Radar: The Translational Landscape of Dendritic Cell-Centric Nanotherapeutics and Microenvironment Remodeling for Osteosarcoma.

For decades, survival rates in metastatic Osteosarcoma (OS) have starkly plateaued. The persistent failure of immune checkpoint blockade underscores a critical reality: the true therapeutic bottleneck is not merely exhausted T cells, but a profound upstream defect in antigen presentation by Dendritic cells (DCs). To overcome this, this review comprehensively outlines the translational landscape of DC-centric therapeutics in OS, tracing the paradigm shift from foundational ex vivo cellular vaccines to advanced in situ vaccination strategies. Specifically, we highlight how intelligent biomateria
