The goal of this review is to discuss the current utility of fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET for radiation oncologists who treat gynecologic malignancies. FDG-PET/computed tomography (CT) is recommended for baseline assessment in cervical cancer and for staging in vulvar and vaginal cancer. The authors use FDG-PET/CT in definitive radiation treatment planning for cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancer. PET may be helpful for salvage radiation treatment planning for any recurrent gynecologic malignancy. There are published data to support the use of PET in posttreatment evaluation of cer

OBJECTIVES: Patients with non-metastatic, high-risk prostate cancer (HR PCa) often face a choice between radical prostatectomy (RP) and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), typically combined with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). We explored the considerations that lead patients to prefer either RP or EBRT with or without ADT. To contextualize these preferences, we examined how treatment information provision for HR PCa patients is organized in Dutch hospitals and how it is experienced by both patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs).
METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews

A major issue in the treatment of breast cancer deals with local control of disease and the necessity for removing microscopically involved lymph nodes. Many radiation oncologists are looking to the parasternal lymphatics as possible renewed justification for postoperative radiation. It is concluded that prospectively designed studies are needed to assay the importance of the internal mammary nodes and their adequate control. Lymphoscintigraphy may offer a method of evaluating these nodes without radical surgery.

Consensus opinion from published reports on the management of localized carcinoma of the penis recommends that patients with small, distal, non-poorly differentiated lesions should be offered penis-conserving treatment, while those with larger or more advanced lesions should be considered for amputative surgery. A questionnaire survey was sent to 289 urologists and 237 oncologists in the UK to assess their practice for the treatment of localized carcinoma of the penis. Consultants were asked to choose between penis-conserving surgery, amputation or radiotherapy as their preferred treatment for

Lingual artery (LA) stenosis or bleeding can be a potentially fatal consequence of stereotactic body radiation therapy of recurrent head and neck cancer. We aim to provide delineation guidelines for LA contouring during head and neck radiation. Three experienced radiation oncologists and 1 radiologist studied the course of LA and its anatomic relationships. A step-by-step guideline was formulated for its delineation on contrast-enhanced axial computed tomography scans. We recommend that LA should be considered an important organ at risk for stereotactic body radiation therapy of head and neck

Although the physical and biologic principles of radiation therapy have remained relatively unchanged, a technologic renaissance has led to continuous and ever-changing growth in the field of radiation oncology. As a result, medical devices, techniques, and indications have changed considerably during the past 20-30 years. For example, advances in CT and MRI have revolutionized the treatment planning process for a variety of central nervous system diseases, including primary and metastatic tumors, vascular malformations, and inflammatory diseases. The resultant improved ability to delineate no
