Recent advances in multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) technology have transformed the imaging evaluation of the trachea and bronchi. Multiplanar 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional volume reconstruction techniques, including external rendering and virtual bronchoscopy, can be generated in mere minutes, thereby complementing conventional axial CT imaging in the depiction of various central airway disease processes including airway stenoses, central airway neoplasms, and congenital airway disorders. Paired inspiratory and dynamic expiratory MDCT imaging, along with newer cine CT imaging method

The purpose of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate a dedicated metal artefact reduction (MAR) method for flat-detector CT (FDCT). The algorithm uses the multidimensional raw data space to calculate surrogate attenuation values for the original metal traces in the raw data domain. The metal traces are detected automatically by a three-dimensional, threshold-based segmentation algorithm in an initial reconstructed image volume, based on twofold histogram information for calculating appropriate metal thresholds. These thresholds are combined with constrained morphological operations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the precision of CT-based volumetric measurements of artificial small pulmonary nodules under ex vivo conditions. We implanted 322 artificial nodules in 23 inflated ex vivo porcine lungs in a dedicated chest phantom. The lungs were examined with a multislice spiral CT (20 mAs, collimation 16x0.75 mm, 1 mm slice thickness, 0.7 mm increment). A commercial volumetry software package (LungCARE VA70C-W; Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) was used for volume analysis in a semi-automatic and a manual corrected mode. After imaging, the lungs were dissected to harv

To improve automatic lung nodule detection in chest X-ray images, this study proposes an improved YOLOv12-based detection framework by integrating space-to-depth convolution (SPDConv), a dynamic upsampling module (DySample), and a lightweight feature aggregation module (VoVGSCSP). SPDConv enhances spatial information preservation during feature extraction, DySample replaces conventional upsampling to improve multi-scale feature fusion, and VoVGSCSP strengthens feature representation while reducing computational redundancy. The optimized YOLOv12-DSV model was trained and evaluated using a publi

Chest radiography is the most widely used imaging technique for the diagnosing of lung diseases, but interpreting X-rays can be very difficult due to the subtle abnormalities and variations in image quality taken during X-rays. While deep learning models, especially the Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs), have shown strong performance when it comes to detecting pneumonia and other conditions, Vision Transformers (ViTs) have recently surpassed CNNs on several chest X-ray benchmarks by dividing images into small patches and learning global relationships. However, standard ViTs can sometimes focu

Anatomical abnormality detection and report generation of chest X-ray (CXR) are two essential tasks in clinical practice. The former aims at localizing and characterizing cardiopulmonary radiological findings in CXRs, while the latter summarizes the findings in a detailed report for further diagnosis and treatment. Existing methods often focused on either task separately, ignoring their correlation. This work proposes a co-evolutionary abnormality detection and report generation (CoE-DG) framework. The framework utilizes both fully labeled (with bounding box annotations and clinical reports) a

INTRODUCTION: High quality image interpretation is essential to detect early abnormalities on mammograms. A better understanding of the types of image characteristics that are most challenging to readers would support future education, as well as underpin advancements in AI modelling. This current work focuses on radiography advanced practitioners (RAP) to establish if RAPs and radiologists are challenged by the same characteristics.
METHODS: This was a prospective, comparison study of radiographer and radiologist mammography readings. Using a cloud-based image interpretative platform and a 5

Advances in computer vision and machine learning have augmented the ability to analyze orthopedic radiographs. A critical but underexplored component of this process is the accurate classification of radiographic views and localization of relevant anatomical regions, both of which can impact the performance of downstream diagnostic models. This study presents a deep learning object detection model and mobile application designed to classify distal radius radiographs into standard views-anterior-posterior (AP), lateral (LAT), and oblique (OB)- while localizing the anatomical region most relevan

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a prevalent structural deformity disease of human spine, and accurate assessment of spinal anatomical parameters is essential for clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. In recent years, significant progress has been made in automatic AIS diagnosis based on deep learning methods. However, effectively utilizing spinal structure information to improve the parameter measurement and diagnosis accuracy from spinal X-ray images remains challenging. This paper proposes a novel spine keypoint detection framework to complete the intelligent diagnosis of AIS,

Self-supervised learning (SSL) reduces the need for manual annotation in deep learning models for medical image analysis. By learning the representations from unablelled data, self-supervised models perform well on tasks that require little to no fine-tuning. However, for medical images, like chest X-rays, characterised by complex anatomical structures and diverse clinical conditions, a need arises for representation learning techniques that encode fine-grained details while preserving the broader contextual information. In this context, we introduce MLVICX (Multi-Level Variance-Covariance Exp

Deep learning plays a significant role in the detection of pulmonary nodules in low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans, contributing to the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Nevertheless, its effectiveness often relies on the availability of extensive, meticulously annotated dataset. In this paper, we explore the utilization of an incompletely annotated dataset for pulmonary nodules detection and introduce the FULFIL (Forecasting Uncompleted Labels For Inexpensive Lung nodule detection) algorithm as an innovative approach. By instructing annotators to label only the nodules they are m

Architectural distortion (AD) is one of the most common findings on mammograms, and it may represent not only cancer but also a lesion such as a radial scar that may have an associated cancer. AD accounts for 18-45% missed cancer, and the positive predictive value of AD is approximately 74.5%. Early detection of AD leads to early diagnosis and treatment of the cancer and improves the overall prognosis. However, detection of AD is a challenging task. In this work, we propose a new approach for detecting architectural distortion in mammography images by combining preprocessing methods and a nove

BACKGROUND: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has been widely adopted as a supplemental imaging modality for diagnostic evaluation of breast cancer and confirmation studies. In this study, a deep learning-based method for characterizing breast tissue patterns in DBT data is presented.
METHODS: A set of 5388 2D image patches was produced from 230 right mediolateral oblique, 259 left mediolateral oblique, 18 right craniocaudal, and 15 left craniocaudal single-breast DBT studies, using slice-wise annotations of abnormalities and normal tissue. We implemented a patch classifier to predict sample

In mammograms, a calcification is represented as small but brilliant white region of the digital image. Earlier detection of malignant calcifications in patients provides high expectation of surviving to this disease. Nevertheless, white regions are difficult to see by visual inspection because a mammogram is a gray-scale image of the breast. To help radiologists in detecting abnormal calcification, computer-inspection methods of mammograms have been proposed; however, it remains an open important issue. In this context, we propose a strategy for detecting calcifications in mammograms based on

OBJECTIVE: Motion blur is a known phenomenon in full-field digital mammography, but the impact on lesion detection is unknown. This is the first study to investigate detection performance with varying magnitudes of simulated motion blur.
METHODS: 7 observers (15 ± 5 years' reporting experience) evaluated 248 cases (62 containing malignant masses, 62 containing malignant microcalcifications and 124 normal cases) for 3 conditions: no blurring (0 mm) and 2 magnitudes of simulated blurring (0.7 and 1.5 mm). Abnormal cases were biopsy proven. Mathematical simulation was used to provide a pixel shi

OBJECTIVE: Early detection of breast cancer is directly related to the radiologist's ability to detect abnormalities visible only on mammograms. Artifacts on mammograms reduce image quality and may present clinical and technical difficulties for the radiologist, mammography technologist, medical physicist, and equipment service personnel.
CONCLUSION: In this article, we will illustrate the appearance of artifacts in full field digital mammography, review the causes of these artifacts, and discuss methods to eliminate artifacts in digital mammography.

Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, in which abnormalities are automatically detected and their locations presented to the radiologist as prompts, are increasingly being used to improve reader performance. The performance of CAD systems can be evaluated in two ways: by measuring the performance of the algorithms, or by monitoring the performance of readers using the system. All aspects of evaluation need careful consideration to avoid potential bias. This paper examines a variety of different approaches to evaluation and discusses their relative strengths and weaknesses.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop an automated method for detection of local texture-based and density-based abnormalities in chest radiographs.
METHODS: The method was based on profile analysis to detect abnormalities in chest radiographs. In the method, one density-based feature, Density Symmetry Index, and two texture-based features, Roughness Maximum Index and Roughness Symmetry Index, were used to detect abnormalities in the lung fields. In each chest radiograph, the lung fields were divided into four zones initially and then the method was applied to each zone separately. Fo

Segmentation models can surpass radiologists, classification models, and vision-language models in tumor detection. Furthermore, segmentation models outline tumors, allowing radiologists to better verify and trust the AI output. However, their main limitation is the scarcity of tumor masks: creating one 3D tumor mask takes up to 30 min, so most public CT datasets contain only a few hundred masks, and even the largest private datasets contain only a couple of thousand. Tumor masks are not produced in clinical routine, but radiology reports are. Public datasets contain tens of thousands of CT-Re
