Apical root resorption of incisors after orthodontic treatment of impacted maxillary canines: a radiographic study.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of the study was to evaluate impacted maxillary canines as risk factor for orthodontic apical root resorption. METHODS: The sample comprised 66 patients treated with fixed appliances. Thirty-two patients with a unilateral impacted maxillary canine, which was distanced from the roots of the incisors at a preliminary phase of treatment before bonding, formed the impaction group, and 34 patients without impactions served as the controls. Root shortening was calculated by using pretreatment and posttreatment intraoral radiographs. Inclination of the eruption path of the

Mixed periapical lesion: an atypical radicular cyst with extensive calcifications.

The radicular cyst is an inflammatory odontogenic cyst of endodontic origin. Radiographically, the lesion appears as a periapical radiolucent image. This report describes a very rare case of a mixed periapical radiographic image diagnosed as a radicular cyst. A 37-year-old female patient presented a mixed, well-circumscribed image located in the periapical region of the left maxillary central incisor, which presented unsatisfactory endodontic treatment. Microscopic examination revealed a cavity lined by non-keratinized squamous epithelium and extensive calcifications in the cystic lumen and li

Restorative and periodontal challenges in adults with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.

Oral manifestations of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) include blistering of the oral mucosa, scarring, limited mouth opening, decreased mobility of the tongue, restrictions in oral functions and a high incidence of caries. Adult oral health management is challenging and requires unique strategies, which have not been well described in the published literature. We present a case of DEB focusing on the obstacles encountered during restorative and periodontal care and recommendations for appropriate treatment.

Association of functional gene polymorphism IL-1beta in patients with external apical root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: External apical root resorption (EARR) is a frequent complication of orthodontic treatment. Interleukin 1beta (IL-1beta) is a potent stimulus for bone resorption and osteoclastic cell recruitment during orthodontic tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between a polymorphism in the IL-1beta genes and EARR during orthodontic treatment. METHODS: The sample included 61 Brazilian orthodontic patients, divided into 2 groups according to the presence (affected group, n = 23) or absence (control group, n = 38) of EARR in the central and lateral maxilla

The relationship between alveolar bone height and age in the primary dentition. A retrospective longitudinal radiographic study.

The natural history of changes in attachment level in the primary dentition should be determined before considering diagnostic criteria for periodontal diseases in children. The present study was designed to describe longitudinal changes in the distance between the alveolar bone crest and the cementoenamel junction (ABC-CEJ) determined radiographically. Bite-wing radiographs were obtained from 33 children as part of a routine annual dental examination in a rural community. The ABC-CEJ distance of 1500 sites located at the mesial and distal aspects of primary molars and distal aspect of primary

Orthodontic movement of a dilacerated maxillary incisor in mixed dentition treatment.

Dilaceration is a dental deformity characterized by an angulation between crown and root causing non-eruption of the tooth. It generally occurs following trauma to the deciduous dentition the apices of which lie close to the permanent tooth buds. Surgical extraction used to be the first choice in treating the severely dilacerated teeth. In this case report, it is described how a dilacerated central incisor was successfully moved into alignment in a young patient with proper surgical and orthodontic management avoiding use of prosthetic/implant devices. The panoramic radiograph after the trauma

Number of mutans streptococci or lactobacilli in a total dental plaque sample does not explain the variation in caries better than the numbers in stimulated whole saliva.

For practical reasons the numbers of mutans streptococci (MS) and lactobacilli (LB) in plaque are commonly estimated from saliva samples. The saliva counts are considered to be a reasonable indicator of the entire dentition's total microbial load. However, the value of salivary counts for explaining and predicting caries have been found to be low. There was therefore reason to compare the relationships between caries on the one hand and, on the other, the number of MS or LB in plaque and in saliva, respectively, in order to assess their relative merits for explaining the variation in caries, b

A comparative diagnostic assessment of anterior tooth and bone status using panoramic and periapical radiography.

AIMS: The aim of the present study was to compare diagnostic assessments of anterior tooth and bone status in a randomised cohort of pre-orthodontic patients using panoramic and periapical radiographs. METHOD: Four hundred and forty-four cases with matched periapical and panoramic radiographs were examined by three observers. Two were final-year postgraduate endodontic students and the other, a final-year Honours degree dental student. Multi-rater Kappa values were used to assess the reliability of the observers, with a value of 1 equating to complete agreement. RESULTS: With the exception o

Implant failure associated with actinomycosis in a medically compromised patient.

Oral actinomycosis is not a common disease, but it can cause massive destruction. This article reports a case of implant failure associated with actinomycosis. A 55-year-old Caucasian male patient had tooth #20 extracted years ago and an implant placed 3 years ago. The #20 implant area developed an abscess about 1½ years after implant placement. Radiographic findings revealed a large radiolucency on the mesial aspect of the #20 implant. The implant was surgically removed and the lesion thoroughly debrided. The patient experienced severe pain when the apical soft tissue was curreted following i

The pattern of alveolar crest height change in healthy postmenopausal women after 3 years of hormone/estrogen replacement therapy.

BACKGROUND: The loss of ovarian function at menopause is associated with loss of postcranial and oral bone. Hormone/estrogen replacement therapy (HRT/ERT) has a positive effect on both postcranial and oral bone. The objective of the study was to determine if the positive effect of HRT/ERT on alveolar crest height (ACH) is generalized or site specific. METHODS: The sample consisted of 49 women who completed a 3-year, HRT/ERT prospective study. Cemento-enamel junction distances (ACH) were measured on digitized images of bitewing radiographs. Factors affecting the diagnostic quality of bitewing radiographs: a review.

The bitewing radiograph (BWR) has been used in dental practice for over 90 years and is a widely used technique. This paper outlines the ideal technique for producing reproducible BWR of good diagnostic quality. In particular, it reviews the technical errors that may occur while exposing and processing BWR and the psychological errors that may result when radiographs are viewed. The consequences of these errors, (unnecessary patient exposure to radiation, poor diagnosis and potentially inappropriate treatment) are outlined in detail. Steps to improve the quality of BWR and decrease patient exp

The effect of NaF and SMFP toothpastes on three-year caries increments in adolescents.

A three-year double blind clinical caries trial was undertaken to compare the anticaries efficacy of three types of active agent, namely sodium fluoride (NaF), sodium monofluorophosphate (SMFP) and the combination of NaF plus sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP), using two fluoride levels (1000 ppm F and 1500 ppm F). The prime objective of the study was to determine whether there was any difference in the anticaries efficacy between NaF and SMFP. The second objective was to assess the effect on caries protection of the incorporation of TMP into a NaF dentifrice formulation. The study was carried out

Oblique lateral radiographs and bitewings; estimation of organ doses in head and neck region with Monte Carlo calculations.

OBJECTIVES: When bitewing radiographs are not possible (e.g. patients with special needs), oblique lateral radiographs may offer an alternative. The aims of this study were to assess the impact of horizontal projection angulation, focus-to-skin distance, exposure time and age of the patient on the equivalent radiation dose of several organs in the head and neck region by means of personal computer X-ray Monte Carlo (PCXMC) calculations and to assess the dose obtained from conventional bitewing radiographs. METHODS: PCXMC v. 2.0 software (STUK(®), Helsinki, Finland) was used to estimate the eq

Preventive orthodontic management of tooth transposition.

The contemporary orthodontics should highlight the periodical control of growth and dental development in order to intercept possible disorders in facial growth and tooth eruption. This may allow avoidance or simplification of corrective orthodontic treatment, making it faster and less aggressive. Tooth transposition, a genetically determined eruptive disturbance, presents a relatively low prevalence in the world population and primarily affects maxillary canines and premolars. This paper presents an option for interceptive treatment of bilateral transposition of maxillary canine and premolar

Periapical status of non-root-filled teeth with resin composite, amalgam, or full crown restorations: a cross-sectional study of a Swedish adult population.

INTRODUCTION: Experimental studies show that dental pulp cells respond unfavorably to contact with resin composite restorative material. Hypothetically, in a random population, the frequency of apical periodontitis should be higher for teeth restored with resin composite than with amalgam. Therefore, the aim was to compare the periapical status of non-root-filled teeth restored with resin composite, amalgam, or laboratory-fabricated crowns in an adult Swedish population. METHODS: The subjects comprised 440 individuals from a randomly selected sample of 1,000 adult residents of a Swedish count
