Nickel Gluconate-Mercurius Heel-Potentised Swine Organ Preparations: a new therapeutical approach for the primary treatment of pediatric ranula and intraoral mucocele.

OBJECTIVE: Many authors consider surgical therapy of pediatric ranula and intraoral mucocele as the election treatment. Recently, an intracystic sclerosing injection with OK-432 has been proposed as a ranula primary treatment. This preliminary study evaluates the effectiveness of the use of Nickel Gluconate-Mercurius Heel-Potentised Swine Organ Preparations as the primary treatment of pediatric ranula and intraoral mucocele. METHODS: Eighteen children (9 ranulas, 9 labial mucoceles, 2 lingual mucoceles) were treated with oral administration of Nickel Gluconate-Mercurius Heel-Potentised Swine

Excision of Sublingual Gland.

There are 2 types of ranulas: oral ranulas and plunging (cervical) ranulas. The management of the cervical ranula involves surgical excision of the oral portion of the ranula along with the associated sublingual salivary gland. The sublingual gland is easily removed from an intraoral approach. Significant anatomic structures associated with the removal of the sublingual gland are the submandibular duct, lingual nerve, and sublingual artery. Knowledge of the anatomy makes the surgery easier and without complications.

[Little frog in the mouth: a visual diagnosis?].

Ranula, from the Latin "little frog", is a retention cyst filled with saliva in the oral cavity. Simple ranulas most commonly affect the sublingual gland and typically present as a hemispherical bluish cyst on the floor of the mouth, making it a visual diagnosis. A 7-year-old girl presented with a swelling on the underside of the tongue, an uncommon location for a ranula that made diagnostic assignment difficult. The optimal treatment of a ranula is still controversial in the literature. Many authors favor surgery as the treatment of choice. Our case shows that a watch and wait approach with s

[The development of mucoid cysts of the mouth floor after dissection of Wharton's duct].

6 cases of traumatic lesions of the sub-lingual gland leading to the development of ranulae of the buccal floor are reported similar to those noted in studies by Delaire and Billet. These complications are rare and the causal relationship between gland trauma-ranula is confirmed, via the constant difficulty of dissection of Wharton's duct and the appearance of the ranula within a delay of 3 to 6 months.

Outcome of marsupialisation for the management of isolated sublingual sialocoeles in dogs: nine cases (2009-2023).

INTRODUCTION: The widespread consensus for the management of isolated sublingual sialocoeles (ranulas) is to perform mandibular and sublingual sialoadenectomy, despite limited evidence to support this recommendation over ranula marsupialisation alone. OBJECTIVES: To describe the outcomes and complications associated with marsupialisation alone for the management of isolated ranulas in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective case series. Electronic records of five veterinary referral hospitals and one peripatetic ECVS diplomate were searched between January 2009 and May 2023 for dogs that

Three Signs to Help Detect Sjögren's Syndrome: Incidental Findings on Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography.

This study aimed to retrospectively investigate the prevalence of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) among patients with ranulas, parotid cysts, or parotid calcifications; identify the characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) findings of the lesions associated with SS; and compare the SS disease stages among SS patients with the three lesion types. A total of 228 patients with the lesions were classified into SS, possible SS, and non-SS groups. The prevalence of SS among patients with ranulas, parotid cysts, or parotid calcifications was 16%, 24%, and 40%, and the rates

Predicting Vision-Threatening Retinopathy in Patients With Diabetes Using Patient-Reported Data: Impact on Reading Center Workflow Efficiency.

IMPORTANCE: Ethanol ablation (EA) was shown to be safe and effective for treating ranula, but few studies have assessed long-term outcomes and recurrence of ranula after EA. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term outcomes and the risk factors for recurrence and receipt of subsequent surgery in patients who underwent treatment with EA for ranula. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-series study was conducted at a single tertiary hospital and assessed patients who were treated with EA between July 2009 and March 2021. [Cyst of submandibular gland: report of 1 case and review of the literatures].

This paper reported a 16-year-old girl suffering from painless swelling in the right submandibular region which was diagnosed as ranula, but during the surgery, it was seen that the cyst was closely related to the submandibular gland and it was proved by pathological diagnosis as submandibular cyst. Submandibular cyst and ranula should be distinguished clinically, in order to avoid misdiagnosis and mistreatment.

Pediatric Sublingual Dermoid Cyst: Diagnostic Challenges and Surgical Management in a 13-Year-Old Boy.

BACKGROUND Ranulas are typical causes of sublingual cysts in children. However, our case was histopathologically confirmed to be a dermoid cyst. Epidermoid and dermoid cysts of the floor of the mouth account for <0.01% of all oral cavity lesions and 0.29% of head and neck tumors in children. Salivary congestive cysts (ranulas) involve the sublingual salivary glands or the common duct of the sublingual and submandibular salivary glands. This report describes a 13-year-old boy presenting with a sublingual cyst, diagnosed by histopathology as a dermoid cyst. Treatment is based on surgical removal

The Diagnostic Challenge of Sialolithiasis.

The major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, and sublingual) are most frequently obstructed by calculi within the salivary gland, or more uncommonly, by ranulas. Despite the well-defined clinical and radiographic diagnostic features, sialolithiasis may sometimes be confused with sialadenitis and ranulas, especially when encountered in general dental practice. We, therefore, present a case that illustrates this diagnostic dilemma to highlight the salient features of all three conditions. A 28-year-old female presented with a history of a submandibular swelling for 8 months. On intraoral e

Sialodochostomy as treatment for imperforate submandibular duct: a systematic literature review and report of two cases.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand the diagnosis, treatments, and outcomes of congenitally imperforate salivary ducts. METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed using the following terms: imperforate submandibular duct, imperforate Wharton's duct, congenital atresia submandibular duct, congenital atresia sublingual duct, and congenital ranula. Only papers focusing on congenital floor of mouth cysts arising from imperforate salivary ducts were included. Two additional patients from our own experience are also discussed. RESULTS: Seventeen papers published since 1950 met inclusion cri

Intralingual Mucous Extravasation Cyst: An Uncommon Lingual Cyst.

OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of an intralingual ranula. The differential diagnosis, etiology, diagnostic features, and management are discussed. CASE REPORT: An 18-year-old man presented with a mass that extended along the ventral surface of the tongue and up to the tip. The computed tomography scan clearly defined the extent of a cystic lesion. The pathologic diagnosis of an intralingual ranula was made. CONCLUSION: Lingual cysts have a varied etiology. Diagnosis hinges on histological examination of the cyst wall. Conservative resection and histological examination is the standard of c

A case of imperforate Wharton duct.

Congenital oral masses are rare entities. The establishment of formal fetal diagnostic teams has led to an increased antenatal detection of such lesions. The congenital ranula is a distinct entity from the more familiar variant presenting later in life. The congenital variant may result from an anomaly of the Wharton duct with subsequent dilation of the duct. The variant presenting later in life is the more familiar mucous extravasation phenomenon in the floor of the mouth. Management of the congenital ranula is distinct from its noncongenital counterpart and more conservative and is discussed

Congenital cystic dilatation of the submandibular duct.

A lesion which appeared clinically consistent with a ranula was explored surgically and found to represent a dilated submandibular duct. The differential diagnosis of cystlike swelling in the floor of the mouth should include sialolithiasis, mucous retention phenomenon (mucocele, ranula), dermoid and epidermal inclusion cyst, thyroglossal duct cyst, branchial cleft cyst, hemangioma, lymphangioma, cystic hygroma, lipoma, and occasionally pleomorphic adenoma. The case presented here demonstrates, both clinically and histologically, the cystic appendix-like appearance of a dilated submandibular d

Symptomatic Floor-of-Mouth Swelling with Neck Extension in a 14-Year-Old Girl.

A plunging ranula is a soft-tissue mass stemming from a mucous extravasation cyst of the sublingual gland which can herniate through the mylohyoid muscle. We describe a case in which a 14-year-old girl presented with a rapidly expanding mass on the floor of her mouth affecting her ability to swallow and speak and causing tracheal compression. The patient was initially managed conservatively with antibiotics and steroids; however, the mass continued to expand necessitating emergent bedside incision and drainage and subsequent surgical intervention. The pathophysiology and management options for

Submandibular gland mucocele presenting as a lateral neck swelling.

Mucus extravasation cysts or mucoceles are an extremely rare occurrence in the major salivary glands. We report upon an unusual case of a submandibular gland mucocele presenting as a neck lump. It should therefore be considered in the differential diagnosis of swellings in the lateral neck. Diagnosis and management are complicated by their similarity to the plunging or cervical ranula and differentiation may be potentially difficult. Detailed imaging often reveals the plunging ranula as being characterised by a so -called 'tail' sign. In our case this sign was absent and subsequent excision co
