Functional sensory recovery after trigeminal nerve repair.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to estimate the proportion of subjects who achieved functional sensory recovery (FSR) 1 year after inferior alveolar or lingual nerve repair and to identify risk factors associated with failure to achieve FSR. METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort study design, we developed a sample composed of subjects who underwent lingual or inferior alveolar nerve repair. Eligible subjects had at least 1 postoperative visit. For subjects having bilateral nerve repair, 1 side was selected randomly for analysis. Predictor variables were categorized as demographic, anatomic

Functional recovery from paraplegia caused by syphilitic meningomyelitis.

BACKGROUND: Syphilitic involvement of the nervous system can present in many different ways. We report a patient who presented with rapidly evolving paraparesis secondary to syphilitic meningomyelitis. METHODS: Case report. FINDINGS: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies confirmed the diagnosis of neurosyphilis. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies were indicative of leptomeningeal and thoracic spinal cord disease. Treatment with IV penicillin resulted in marked clinical, radiologic, and CSF improvement. MRI imaging provided documentation of spinal cord involvement and was useful in m

Human cortical plasticity: functional recovery with mirror movements.

Cortical plasticity of the human brain permits functional recovery after brain injury even in the absence of neuronal recovery. We report the combined evaluation, including electrophysiology and functional magnetic resonance imaging, of the pattern of cortical and cerebellar reorganization, in a patient with mirror movements as a sequel of perinatal unilateral brain injury. Recovery resulted in motor control by the healthy hemisphere using direct ipsilateral corticospinal projections and the contralateral cerebellum.

[Reconstructive surgery of the upper lip with esthetic-functional recovery].

Two cases are reported of reconstructive surgery of the upper lip in patients who had squamous cell carcinoma, using the Bürrow technique. This technique is more used in lower lips because it does not involve esthetic unity. We have opted for it in the upper lip also, using a variation in the lip commissure incision, getting a significant functional and esthetic result.

Neurophysiological basis of functional recovery in the neonatal spinalized rat.

It had been shown previously that, following spinalization of the neonatal rat on postnatal day 7 (PN7), at the middle thoracic level, there was spontaneous recovery of coordinated stepping in the hindlimbs, enabling the animal to execute quadrupedal locomotion, with an ataxic gait. No significant recovery occurred in rats that were similarly spinalized on PN14. Despite the functional recovery in the PN7 group, their hindlimbs were paralyzed when not in contact with a surface. In the present experiments, at 16-18 weeks after spinalization, muscle spindle GpIa and cutaneous afferents were teste

Functional recovery after decompressive craniectomy for cerebral infarction.

There is continuing controversy about the benefits of decompressive craniectomy in the treatment of lesions causing increased intracranial pressure (ICP) and brain edema. Laboratory work has shown a decrease in ICP after craniectomy, but also a paradoxical enhancement in the formation of underlying cerebral edema, which may act to the detriment of the patient. Since Rengachary et al. advocated craniectomy for massive cerebral infarction and reported their group of three patients, we have managed five patients with acute supratentorial cerebral infarction who progressed to uncal herniation and

Restoration Plantings Promote Functional Recovery of Soil Fungi.

The global scale of biodiversity loss and land degradation has prompted the establishment of ambitious international restoration agreements, with the goal of returning biodiverse and functional ecosystems. Restoration interventions are often vegetation focused, and while they yield positive, measurable outcomes, they do not always lead to whole ecosystem recovery. Although soil microbiota such as fungi are integral ecosystem components (e.g., as symbionts, decomposers and drivers of nutrient cycling), they are largely absent from restoration planning and monitoring. Therefore, how fungi respon

Endocrine-related neurological function recovery in pancreatic transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Pancreas transplantation (PT) has emerged as a critical therapeutic intervention for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). This procedure restores neuroendocrine communication, which is essential for optimal pancreatic function and insulin regulation. The recovery process involves multiple phases, including neural regeneration, revascularization, and the re-establishment of synaptic connections, all of which contribute to the restoration of both endocrine and neurological functions. AIM: To systematically examine the mechanisms underlying neurological recovery following P

HISTOPATHOLOGICAL PREDICTORS AND FUNCTIONAL RECOVERY IN PATIENTS WITH INTRACRANIAL MENINGIOMAS.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical, morphological, and functional predictors of rehabilitation potential (RP) in patients following the removal of intracranial meningiomas. The primary objective was to assess the prognostic significance of tumor biomarkers (Ki-67, CD34), the depth of brain invasion, and the extent of surgical intervention in relation to functional recovery and the likelihood of recurrence. Meningiomas exhibit a wide biological spectrum that affects recurrence risk, neurological outcomes, and rehabilitation potential. In this context, a key aspe

Olfactory Function Recovery in Endoscopic Transsphenoidal Pituitary Surgery.

Olfactory flap preservation in transsphenoidal surgery (TSA) promotes early olfactory recovery. Objective olfactory function recovers faster than subjective olfaction following TSA. Olfactory-specific and sinonasal olfactory-specific quality of life (QOL) smell scores show divergent recovery timelines.

Site of the ischemic penumbra as a predictor of potential for recovery of functions.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diffusion-perfusion mismatch has been used to estimate salvageable tissue and predict potential for recovery in acute stroke. Location of the salvageable tissue may be as important as volume or percentage in predicting potential for recovery of specific functions. Impaired naming, a common and disabling deficit after left hemisphere stroke, is often associated with tissue dysfunction of left Brodmann area (BA) 37, posterior inferior temporal cortex. We tested the hypothesis that the presence of diffusion-perfusion mismatch within left BA 37 predicts probability and exte
