The effect of lengthening of the femur on the extensors of the knee. An electromyographic study.

Surface electromyography of the quadriceps femoris muscle was performed in seven patients in order to determine the effect of extensive lengthening of the femur on the muscles that extend the knee. Electromyograms were made during sustained (thirty-second) isometric extension of the knee, at an angle of flexion of the knee of 30 degrees, while a load equal to 15 per cent of body weight was applied to the leg just proximal to the ankle. The average circumference of the thigh was smaller, the motor-unit recruitment of the muscles was slower, and the fatigability was greater on the involved side

Ataxia in myxoedema: a neurophysiological reassessment.

In a long-standing case of myxoedema with ataxia and dysarthria, neurophysiological investigations were carried out to assess how much of the ataxic dysbasic syndrome depended on the slowness of mechanical contraction and how much resulted from primary cerebellar involvement. It was observed that the Achilles reflexogram showed a marked prolongation of contraction and relaxation time and that in both quadriceps and triceps surae mechanical percussion induced a marked myxoedema and prolonged relaxation time. The EMG of these muscles during voluntary contraction and stopping reaction detected an

[Protocol for neurophysiological studies of the pelvic floor to appraise anorectal dysfunction in patients with multiple sclerosis].

INTRODUCTION: Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) frequently develop anorectal dysfunction. The neuromuscular structures of the pelvic floor and the mechanisms of voluntary control over defecation can be compromised by the patchy lesions of MS or secondary to the patient's disability. The involvement of multiple factors limits understanding of the pathophysiology of anorectal dysfunction in MS. Specific neurophysiological tests assess the functionality of the elements of the central and peripheral nervous system involved in anorectal dysfunction. AIM: To propose a diagnostic protocol of sta

Acute Modulation of Lumbar Motor Unit Behavior During Experimentally Induced Low Back Pain: A Motor Unit Decomposition Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute low back pain is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder that can disrupt motor control and compromise functional stability. Evidence suggests that pain alters motor unit discharge characteristics and the temporal organization of muscle activation; however, the specific neuromuscular adaptations associated with acute low back pain remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of experimentally induced acute low back pain on force steadiness and motor unit discharge characteristics (including recruitment threshold, motor unit firing rat

Optimization of selective stimulation parameters for multi-contact electrodes.

BACKGROUND: Multi-contact stimulating electrodes are gaining acceptance as a means for interfacing with the peripheral nervous system. These electrodes can potentially activate many independent populations of motor units within a single peripheral nerve, but quantifying their recruitment properties and the overlap in stimulation between contacts is difficult and time consuming. Further, current methods for quantifying overlap between contacts are ambiguous and can lead to suboptimal selective stimulation parameters. This study describes a novel method for optimizing stimulation parameters for

Electrocochleographic evaluation of the guinea pig model of endolymphatic hydrops.

Electrocochleography (ECochG) was used to evaluate cochlear function in guinea pigs with experimentally induced endolymphatic hydrops (ELH) before and after osmotic dehydration with either glycerol or urea. We surgically induced ELH in the right ears of 9 guinea pigs, while the right ears of 6 guinea pigs received a sham operation. The left ears of the 15 animals constituted the normal group. Eight weeks after surgery, summating potential (SP) and action potential (AP) amplitudes were measured prior to and following the administration of glycerol or urea. The SPs and SP/AP ratios were reduced

Functional motor control deficits in older FMR1 premutation carriers.

Individuals with fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene premutations are at increased risk for fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) during aging. However, it is unknown whether older FMR1 premutation carriers, with or without FXTAS, exhibit functional motor control deficits compared with healthy individuals. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to determine whether older FMR1 premutation carriers exhibit impaired ability to perform functional motor tasks. Eight FMR1 premutation carriers (age: 58.88 ± 8.36 years) and eight age- and sex-matched healthy individuals (60.13

Mean power frequency during speech in myalgia patients.

The purpose of this study was to clarify a difference of mean power frequency (MPF) during speech between control and myalgia patients groups. The control group consisted of 20 asymptomatic volunteers and the myalgia patients group consisted of 19 patients. A bilateral electromyogram (EMG) of masseter muscles during speech movement was recorded using surface electrodes, and the EMG data were stored and analysed with a computer-based EMG analyzer. The MPF during the entire duration of EMG burst during speech was compared between the control and myalgia group. The average (SD) MPFs during speech

Elucidation of a potentially destabilizing control strategy in ACL deficient non-copers.

PURPOSE: The purpose was to differentiate the dynamic knee stabilization strategies of potential copers (individuals who have the potential to compensate for the absence of an ACL without episodes of giving way after return to pre-injury activities) and non-copers (those who have knee instability following ACL rupture with return to pre-injury activities). METHODS: Twenty subjects with ACL rupture were assigned to potential coper (n=10) and non-coper (n=10) groups via a screening examination. Ten active people without lower extremity injury were also tested. Knee angle, tibial position and mu

Responses of neurons in the rat thalamic nucleus submedius to cutaneous, muscle and visceral nociceptive stimuli.

The findings of recent studies have suggested that nucleus submedius (Sm) may be an important thalamic relay for nociceptive information. The aim of the present electrophysiological study was to examine in greater detail the activity and response properties of neurons in the rat Sm in order to further evaluate this hypothesis. Single unit extracellular recordings from neurons histologically verified to be in Sm were obtained in urethane/chloralose-anesthetized rats. Noxious but not innocuous mechanical stimulation elicited responses in 75% of the 204 neurons studied. Most (85%) of these neuron

Agonist and antagonist activity during voluntary upper-limb movement in patients with stroke.

Forty-four patients with hemiplegia following stroke and 10 nondisabled subjects were studied to examine the contributions inadequate motor unit recruitment and co-contraction attributable to impaired antagonist inhibition play in the movement disorder of the hemiplegic arm. Electromyographic data were recorded from agonist and antagonist muscles while subjects attempted six specified tasks. Data from subjects who could complete the tasks were compared with those who could not complete the tasks. Differences between the two groups were found in the electromyographic data obtained from the agon

Vagal and splanchnic effects at the level of the ventromedian nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) in the cat.

A systematic study of vagal and splanchnic projections to the VMH area was undertaken in anaesthetized cats by means of macroelectrodes and microelectrodes. Responses elicited by vagal and splanchnic nerve stimulation were recorded from the VMH nucleus and the region situated above it. The fact that they are identical, whatever the nerve stimulated, indicates that the afferences follow a common central pathway. From the response latency and the stimulation parameters, it is assumed that the small vagal and splanchnic fibres (A delta, B and C) are involved. Evoked potentials are generally const

Is Muscle Pain in Temporomandibular Disorder a Hyperactivity Problem? A Clinical, Thermographic, and Electromyographic Analysis.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to report clinical data on muscle pain in temporomandibular disorders using thermography, algometry, and surface electromyography (EMG). This was done to support or rule out the hypothesis that painful muscles are always related to muscular hyperactivity. This cross-sectional, analytical study included 50 participants who underwent clinical examination and evaluation of anterior temporal muscles and bilateral masseters using thermography, algometry, and EMG. The muscles with greater pain symptoms had hyporadiation and a lower temperature compared with both contralate

Intensive Care Unit-Acquired Weakness after Liver Transplantation: Analysis of Seven Cases and a Literature Review.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)-Acquired Weakness (ICU-AW) is a generalized muscle weakness that is clinically detected in critical patients and has no plausible etiology other than critical illness. ICU-AW is uncommon in patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Our report sheds light on the highest number of ICU-AW cases observed in a single center on OLT patients with early allograft dysfunction. Out of 282 patients who underwent OLT from January 2015 to June 2023, 7 (2.5%) developed generalized muscle weakness in the ICU and underwent neurophysiological investigations. The neur

Revisiting motor unit recruitment to TMS in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: cortical inhibition is retained during voluntary contractions.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used for many years to study the pathophysiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Based on single- or dual-pulse TMS and EMG and/or single motor unit (MU) recordings, many groups have described a loss of central inhibition as an early marker of ALS dysfunction, reflecting a state of cortical 'hyperexcitability'. This conclusion is not without its detractors, however, leading us to reexamine this issue using 4-pulse TMS, shown previously to be more effective for testing central motor pathway functional integrity. A total of 221 motor units

Shoulder kinematic and muscle recruitment pattern changes in upper trapezius myofascial trigger points: a controlled observational study.

BACKGROUND: Myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) in the upper trapezius are prevalent in individuals with shoulder pain and may interfere with neuromuscular control and kinematics during shoulder movements. The purpose of this study was to compare shoulder muscle activation patterns and kinematic parameters, particularly scapulohumeral rhythm (SHR), between individuals with upper trapezius MTrPs and the healthy group during shoulder abduction. METHODS: An observational study was conducted with participants assigned to either a trigger point group (n = 15) or a healthy group (n = 13). Surface ele

Flat electrode contacts for vagus nerve stimulation.

The majority of available systems for vagus nerve stimulation use helical stimulation electrodes, which cover the majority of the circumference of the nerve and produce largely uniform current density within the nerve. Flat stimulation electrodes that contact only one side of the nerve may provide advantages, including ease of fabrication. However, it is possible that the flat configuration will yield inefficient fiber recruitment due to a less uniform current distribution within the nerve. Here we tested the hypothesis that flat electrodes will require higher current amplitude to activate all
