Epidemiology of refractive errors and its associated factors among medical students.

Refractive error is the leading cause of correctable visual impairment and preventable blindness worldwide. It is a growing public health concern, particularly among the younger population, including medical students, who represent a vital future workforce for developing countries like Ethiopia. Poor ocular health can negatively impact academic performance, productivity, and overall quality of life, further contributing to the economic burden. Despite the increasing prevalence of REs globally, there is a lack of evidence regarding their prevalence and associated factors among medical students

Exploring Molecular Pathways in Refractive Errors Associated with Inherited Retinal Dystrophies.

The term inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) refers to a diverse range of conditions characterized by retinal dysfunction, and mostly deterioration, leading to a gradual decay of the visual function and eventually to total vision loss. IRDs have a global impact on about 1 in every 3000 to 4000 individuals. However, the prevalence statistics might differ significantly depending on the exact type of dystrophy and the demographic being examined. The cellular pathophysiology and genetic foundation of IRDs have been extensively studied, however, knowledge regarding associated refractive errors rem

Natural course of refractive errors in early onset inherited retinal diseases.

BACKGROUND: Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a leading cause of visual impairment in children and young adults. Individuals with IRDs have an increased prevalence of high refractive errors (REs). This study aims to characterise the natural progression of REs in patients with early onset IRDs and identify associations with specific IRDs and genes. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with IRD's up to the age of 10 years. Data collected included demographic information, IRD type, molecular analysis (when available), and cycloplegic REs from the first and last visits.

Refractive errors in an elderly rural Japanese population: The Kumejima study.

The prevalence of refractive errors, which closely relates to visual function difficulties, several ocular disorders, and decreased quality of life, varies among countries and populations. One of the highest prevalence of myopia (spherical equivalent [SE] < -0.5 diopters [D], 41.8%) has been reported in an urban city (Tajimi) in central Japan. Here, we assess refractive conditions in a rural southwestern island (Kumejima) of Japan, where a high prevalence of glaucoma, especially angle-closure glaucoma, has been found. In Kumejima, the prevalence of myopia (SE < -0.5 D), high myopia (SE < -5 D)

Influence of accommodation on off-axis refractive errors in myopic eyes.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to understand off-axis refraction during accommodation and to identify whether the relative hyperopia generally observed in myopic eyes changes with accommodation. METHOD: Twenty bilateral myopes (18 to 33 years) between -0.50 D and -4.25 D (spherical equivalent) and astigmatism less than 1.25 D participated in this study. A soft contact lens was used to correct refractive error for all measurements. Non-cycloplegic autorefraction was measured at the fovea and 20 degrees, 30 degrees, and 40 degrees eccentricities in the nasal and temporal retina at distances of 2

Disease-associated visual image degradation and spherical refractive errors in children.

Retrospective clinical data from 496 eyes of 256 children attending a low vision clinic were analyzed to determine the relation between disease states which involve visual image degradation and refractive error. Refractive data from 1023 normal vision children were used as a control. The low vision children were grouped according to their disease classification and the acknowledged age-of-onset of their visual disability. It was found that there was an overall inability to emmetropize and a trend towards myopia. It was also observed that the diseases which led to myopia were associated with a

Screening for refractive errors at age 1 year: a pilot study.

Cycloplegic refraction of 1-year-old children is technically possible and is acceptable to mothers as a method for screening children for visual defects. The range of refractions found in a sample of 186 1-year-old children is reported. Prediction of which children are significantly at risk for squint and/or amblyopia is possible on the basis of refractions at age 1 year according to the criteria selected for an 'abnormal' refraction. Bilateral hypermetropia and/or astigmatism or anisometropia at age 1 year was significantly (P less than 1 in 10 000) associated with a child eventually being fo

Comparison of refractive error measurements by three different models of autorefractors and subjective refraction in young adults.

In this paper, the accuracy of noncycloplegic refractive error measurements performed by three autorefractors, Nidek ARK-510A, Visionix L80 Wave+, and Shin-Nippon NVision-K 5001, compared with subjective refraction (SR) in young adults is analyzed using statistical methods. The analysis is carried out in terms of spherical equivalent (SE), astigmatism, and two Jackson crossed-cylinder vectors. Fifty-one subjects aged 19-23 were examined. The differences between objective refraction (OR) measured by autorefractors are not statistically significant in either SE or cylindrical components. However
