Emergence of CWD strains.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) strains present a novel challenge to defining and mitigating this contagious prion disease of deer, elk, moose, and reindeer. Similar to strains of other prion diseases (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, sheep scrapie), CWD strains can affect biochemical and neuropathological properties of the infectious agent, and importantly interspecies transmission. To date, ten CWD strains have been characterized. The expanding range of CWD in North America and its presence in South Korea as well as Scandinavian countries will potentially result in millions of cervids infecte

Dose-response relationship between smoking and impairment of hearing acuity in workers exposed to noise.

The study included an inquiry and clinical examination of 443 reindeer herders (mean age 43 years) who frequently used noisy tools and vehicles, in particular snowmobiles and chain-saws. Age-adjusted hearing thresholds at 3 and 4 kHz deteriorated significantly with increased exposure to noise. There was the dose-response relationship between the amount of smoking and the impairment of hearing acuity when exposure time to noise was used as covariance. The amount of smoking was not significant until very heavy smoking (more than 144,000 cigarettes, i.e. 20 cigarettes/day for more than 20 years),

Hand-arm vibration in snowmobile drivers.

Hand-arm vibration was measured on the handlebars of snowmobiles (N = 29) and a postal inquiry was made among reindeer herders, N = 2,705. Since many subjects had used also other vibrating tools a snowmobile group proper (N = 334) was established, and in this group 18% of the subjects reported that they had experienced white finger attacks and 48% numbness of the hands. The age-adjusted prevalence of the white finger syndrome was more than three times higher in the snowmobile group than in the controls. The frequency-weighted acceleration of snowmobile vibration was 3.5 m/s2, and risk evaluati

Snowmobile driving and symptoms of the locomotive organs.

The role of snowmobile driving as a factor in symptoms of the locomotive organs was examined in 1,793 reindeer herding men using a postal questionnaire. Thirty-eight % of the respondents reported troubles in the upper limbs and shoulders which according to their own judgement were caused by snowmobile driving, and 34% reported such symptoms in the knees and 42% in the back. Aching, pain or tenderness upon movement in at least one joint during the current year, inquired by independent questions, were reported by 46% of the men. The prevalence of joint symptoms felt in the elbow (reported by 15%

Prevalence and Intensity of Besnoitia sp. Infection in Migratory Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) Herds in North America.

Besnoitia tarandi is a protozoan commonly reported in reindeer and caribou (Rangifer tarandus spp.), in which it can be associated with morbidity and even mortality. Anecdotal observations suggest that the prevalence and intensity of this parasitic infection vary between caribou herds, but the lack of a standardized method to evaluate the intensity of infection limits inter-herd comparisons. The presence and intensity of Besnoitia sp. infection in metatarsal skin were evaluated using a standardized histopathologic technique in 1,361 migratory caribou sampled from eight herds across Canada, Ala

Landscape heterogeneity buffers the impact of an extreme weather event on wildlife.

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, with poorly known consequences for wildlife. In December 2021, an atmospheric river brought record-shattering amounts of rain and snow to interior Alaska, creating conditions expected to cause mass mortality in grazing ungulate populations that need to access ground forage. We characterized snowpack conditions following the storm and used a 36-year monitoring dataset to quantify impacts on caribou (Rangifer tarandus) and their primary predator, wolves (Canis lupus). December precipitation was 7.3 SD above the 99-year mean and 2.5-fold higher t

Orf virus infection in Alaskan mountain goats, Dall's sheep, muskoxen, caribou and Sitka black-tailed deer.

BACKGROUND: The zoonotic Orf virus (ORFV; genus Parapoxvirus, Poxviridae family) occurs worldwide and is transmitted between sheep and goats, wildlife and man. Archived tissue samples from 16 Alaskan wildlife cases, representing mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus, n = 8), Dall's sheep (Ovis dalli dalli, n = 3), muskox (Ovibos moschatus, n = 3), Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis, n = 1) and caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti, n = 1), were analyzed. RESULTS: Clinical signs and pathology were most severe in mountain goats, affecting most mucocutaneous regions, including palpe

Geographic pattern of serum antibody prevalence for Brucella spp. in caribou, grizzly bears, and wolves from Alaska, 1975-1998.

Blood samples were collected from 2,635 caribou (Rangifer tarandus), 1,238 grizzly bears (Ursus arctos), and 930 wolves (Canis lupus) from throughout mainland Alaska during 1975-98. Sera were tested for evidence of exposure to Brucella spp. Serum antibody prevalences were highest in the northwestern region of the state. In any specific area, antibody prevalences for caribou and wolves were of a similar magnitude, whereas antibody prevalence for bears in these same areas were two to three times higher.

Sarcocystis in caribou (Rangifer tarandus terraenorae) in Newfoundland.

Prevalence of species of Sarcocystis in muscle of 36 caribou, Rangifer tarandus terraenorae, shot in Newfoundland, Canada, was 53%. A greater percentage of infected animals were obtained from the central part of the island. The highest concentration of microscopic sarcocysts, 1/mm2 of tissue, was observed in a 5-year old animal. Although widely distributed throughout the body, cysts were more prevalent in the tongue and diaphragm. The potential of Sarcocystis in caribou as a food-borne disease organism in man cannot be overlooked in view of its prevalence in meat and its widespread consumption

The Structure of Mammalian Prions and Their Aggregates.

Prion diseases, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle, chronic wasting disease in cervids (i.e., deer, elk, moose, and reindeer), and sheep scrapie, are caused by the misfolding of the cellular prion protein (PrPC) into a disease-causing conformer (PrPSc). PrPC is a normal, GPI-anchored protein that is expressed on the surface of neurons and other cell types. The structure of PrPC is well understood, based on studies of recombinant PrP, which closely mimics the structure of native PrPC. In contrast, PrPSc is prone to aggregate into a variety of

The Rudolph sign of nasal vestibular furunculosis: questions raised by this common but under-recognized nasal mucocutaneous disorder.

Nasal vestibular furunculosis is a mucocutaneous disorder commonly seen in the general population. Despite its prevalence in clinical practice, it has been inconsistently described and labeled in the medical literature. We present a case of nasal vestibular furunculosis presenting as recurrent exquisitely tender unilateral erythema and edema of the nasal tip (i.e., the Rudolph sign--as in Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer). This symptom complex responded rapidly to topical intranasal mupirocin ointment treatment after having previously failed other treatments including a topical intranasal triple

Besnoitia spp. Infection of the Testis, Peritesticular Structures, and Udder Skin in Migratory Caribou (Rangifer tarandus).

We investigated the prevalence, cyst density, and any associated pathologic changes of Besnoitia spp. in the testis, peritesticular structures, and udder skin of migratory caribou (Rangifer tarandus). Possible risk factors for infection, cyst density, and inflammation were investigated. Samples from 149 male and 229 female caribou were collected from seven different herds across Canada, Alaska (US), and Greenland, 2007-09. Biopsies were taken from the udder skin in females and from the epididymis, scrotal skin, testis (seminiferous tubules and tunica albuginea), and spermatic cord in males. Th

Suspected Case of Persistent Thiamin Deficiency in a Hand-Reared Caribou Calf.

Hand-reared animals are invaluable and irreplaceable in studies of wildlife nutrition. Hand-rearing protocols provide insights into dietary and training programs, but less information is available on disease management. In young ruminants, thiamin (Vitamin B1) deficiency is a particularly important disease that is treatable early in the disease process, but otherwise can be fatal. In this husbandry report, we describe a case of suspected thiamin deficiency in a hand-reared calf (Rangifer tarandus granti) that resulted in clinical signs of polioencephalomalacia and persisted for > 3 months. Brucella vaccines in wildlife.

Brucellosis has been known to exist in populations of wildlife since the early part of the 20th century. At the beginning of this century in the US, Brucella abortus is a problem in elk and bison in the Greater Yellowstone Area, B. suis is prevalent in millions of feral swine in most of the southern states, and caribou/reindeer in Alaska are infected with B. suis biovar 4. Brucellosis has been virtually eliminated in domestic livestock in the US after decades of expensive governmental disease prevention, control and eradication programs. Now the most likely source of transmission of brucellosi
