Chemerin and its receptor, chemokine-like receptor 1 (CmklR1), are associated with chemotaxis, inflammation, and endothelial function, especially in metabolic syndrome, coronary heart disease, and hypertension. In humans, circulating chemerin levels and renal function show an inverse relation. So far, little is known about the potential role of chemerin in hypertensive nephropathy and renal inflammation. Therefore, we determined systemic and renal chemerin levels in 2-kidney-1-clip (2k1c) hypertensive and Thy1.1 nephritic rats, respectively, to explore the correlation between chemerin and mark

Arterial vasodilatation is one of the most important characteristics of cirrrhosis and portal hyptertension. Nowadays, it has been known that progressive vasodilatation is an essential factor contributing to hyperdynamic circulation and multiple organ dysfunction in liver cirrhosis. Over the past decades, numerous investigations have originated from the clinical observations. Clinicians and investigators have learned and applied new concepts of the pathophysiology of portal hypertension. For example, we now have effective pharmacologic treatment for hepatorenal syndrome. This review summarizes

The aim was to investigate circulating levels of immunoreactive endothelin (ir-ET) in atherosclerotic renovascular hypertension (RVH), and to assess the role of the kidneys in its overall plasma concentration. We studied 16 hypertensive patients with renal artery stenosis evidenced by angiography and admitted to hospital for the diagnostic evaluation of RVH by renal vein plasma renin activity (PRA) determinations. The right femoral vein was catheterized to simultaneously measure PRA and ir-ET in both renal veins and inferior vena cava below the origin of the renal veins. RVH was present in 9 p

A gradually developing reduction in renal blood flow from atherosclerotic renovascular disease results in loss of kidney volume and a decrease in glomerular filtration rate that eventually becomes irreversible. Whether this process fundamentally reflects tissue hypoxia has been difficult to establish. Studies of human renovascular disease have indicated that reductions in blood flow of up to 30% to 40% can be tolerated with preservation of normal oxygenation and structural integrity. These observations are consistent with remarkable stability of poststenotic kidney function during sustained me

The seromucoid fraction of maternal serum glycoproteins is increased in pre-eclampsia and the rise, which is proportional to the severity of the disease, may reflect progressive placental deterioration with increasing trophoblast fragmentation and deportation. The pulmonary lysis of deported trophoblast effects the local release of fetal antigens and thromboplastin in the lungs. The former, which are immunologically inert because they are complexed with maternal serum seromucoid, are released into the peripheral circulation, while the local coagulation hazard presented by the latter is counter

As a result of long-term (from 1969) and extended (800 rabbits) experimental studies using an original complex of specific methods including intravital microscopy with video recording, new evidence on regulation of intrarenal circulation and its impairment in nephrotuberculosis was obtained. The role of the Trueta shunts in this was shown to be insignificant. Of importance was periglomerular shunting. It was concluded that extended microcirculatory disorders in the region of the intact renal parenchima defining development of renal insufficiency were possibly of tuberculosis allergic origin. M

This study is concerned with the mechanisms of human renovascular hypertension. Unilateral partial occlusion of a renal artery was accomplished using a balloon-tipped catheter for occlusive angiography in seven normotensive and 17 primary hypertensive subjects. The renin and circulatory responses were studied during a 60 min reduction of the renal perfusion pressure (RPP) by 50% of control. This stimulus was considered to be safe and strong enough to produce a three to four-fold rise in plasma renin activity. It was observed that: a) systemic (arterial) renin was significantly raised at 5 min,

PURPOSE: The cortical rim sign has frequently been described as a sign of renal infarction. It is reported to be present in approximately 50% of focal or global infarcts and is thought to be due to an intact renal collateral circulation. This study evaluates the incidence and temporal development of the cortical rim sign in posttraumatic renal vascular compromise.
METHOD: This retrospective study included 20 patients who were diagnosed by contrast-enhanced CT to have posttraumatic focal or global infarcts. The CT scans were reviewed to evaluate the size of infarcts and the presence and appear

In addition to the usual renal arteries, a bilateral artery branching from the aorta was found connecting the aorta to both kidneys in an 82 year-old Caucasian man. By creating an additional blood supply to the kidneys this artery may have had an effect on renal perfusion.

We present a review of ultrasonic Doppler methods (duplex scanning) used in the noninvasive assessment of renal artery stenosis and hemodynamics. The clinically successful applications of ultrasonic Doppler methods to the noninvasive assessment of the peripheral and cerebral vasculatures have prompted investigators to apply these methods to the renal artery. Various Doppler criteria for the diagnosis of renal artery stenosis have given sensitivities and specificities that range from 31% to 91% and 88% to 100%, respectively. Furthermore, estimates of renal vascular flows and resistances can be

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important regulators of gene expression, which have roles in renal development and disease. They exist in biological fluids including blood and urine and may have signalling roles and potential as disease biomarkers.
METHODS: We measured the levels of miRNAs in patients with different stages of chronic kidney failure including those receiving maintenance haemodialysis treatment.
RESULTS: In patients with severe chronic renal failure, circulating levels of total and specific miRNAs are reduced in comparison to patients with mild renal impairment or normal re

BACKGROUND: The determinants and prognostic value of albuminuria remain unclear in patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD), especially in those with Fontan circulation (FC).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 512 consecutive ACHD patients and investigated the determinants of urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) and albuminuria (MAU) and their association with all-cause mortality. Demographic data and laboratory and hemodynamic parameters were collected. Regression analysis and Cox proportional hazard models were used to identify the relationship between log ACR and variable

INTRODUCTION: Replanting the inferior mesentery artery during infrarenal aortic aneurysm repair is a measure which might prevent development of colon ischemia under certain circumstances. These circumstances and patients who would benefit from this procedure are not well defined.
CASE REPORT: 64-year old man underwent an elective operation on infrarenal AAA at our institution in December 2009. From preoperative CT angiography we knew about the accessory right renal artery branching directly from AAA and bilateral occlusion of hypogastric arteries. We performed open resection of AAA with impla

The analysis of circulatory dynamics by functional data extraction from radiologic image sequences constitutes the latest development of digital imaging techniques in angiography. In this article, the methodologic approach of angiographic parameter extraction and the interpretation of functional information are outlined. Applications of parametric imaging in arterial blood flow, arterial flow distribution, parenchymal perfusion, and coronary and myocardial perfusion are discussed.

Complications associated with occlusion of the internal iliac arteries are seen less commonly than those following occlusion of the external iliac arteries, because the pelvis has a good collateral circulation. This paper describes a case of severe gluteal necrosis, paraplegia and acute renal failure following an aorto-bifemoral bypass, which we believe was caused by bilateral iliac artery and pelvic collateral circulation occlusion.

Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of renovascular hypertension secondary to hemodynamically significant stenoses (> 60% diameter reduction). To assess the prevalence of atherosclerosis in the peripheral arteries and carotid bifurcation, we prospectively studied 60 patients who had renal artery stenosis documented by ultrasonic duplex scanning. Disease of the peripheral arterial circulation was assessed by the measurement of the ankle/brachial systolic pressure ratio. To evaluate the extracranial carotid artery, ultrasonic duplex scanning was employed. The prevalence of a 50-100% diamete

This study describes a modified technique to fill the renal vasculature with a silicon rubber (Microfil) compound and obtain morphologic information about the intrarenal distribution of capillary blood flow under a variety of conditions. Kidneys and cremaster muscles of rats were perfused in vivo with Microfil using a perfusion pressure equal to the animal's mean arterial pressure at body temperature. Microfil did not alter arteriolar diameter or the pattern of flow in the microcirculation of the cremaster muscle. The modified protocol reproducibly filled the renal vasculature, including; glom

Hepatorenal syndrome is complication of advanced cirrhosis characterized by renal failure, changes in systemic blood pressure, and increased activity of endogenous vasoactive systems. Renal failure is due to severe renal vasoconstriction developing in the late stages of cirrhosis. The pathogenesis of hepatorenal syndrome is the result of an extreme underfilling of the arterial circulation secondary to an arterial vasodilation located in the splanchnic circulation. This underfilling triggers a compensatory response with activation of vasoconstrictor systems. The diagnosis of hepatorenal syndrom
