In this retrospective study, 79 digits of 55 patients received 102 secondary procedures following replantation. We divided the procedures into two groups, occurring before or after 2 months following replantation. The procedures in the early group were mainly for soft tissue coverage (92%), and those in that late group were mainly for tendon (67%) to improve function. Factors associated with higher incidence of early secondary procedures included multiple-finger injury, avulsion or degloving injury and level of injury proximal to zone III in finger replantation (p<0.05). However, younger patie

Although most reports of the functional results of replantation at the metacarpal level have been poor, the author (LRS) has reported good functional results with the early use of the dynamic crane outrigger splint with a MCP joint extension block, as described in this article (Fig. 8). Promoting early protective active motion and blocking MP joint extension [figure: see text] help achieve a hand with an intrinsic-plus posture and coordinated grasping. Although this protocol does not show an improvement over the functional results at the wrist and distal forearm reported by Meyer, its use can

INTRODUCTION: Replantation is an established procedure in reconstructive surgery. In a bilateral lower leg amputation attempts should be made to rescue at least one extremity, if the patients' vital conditions are stable.
PATIENT AND METHOD: We report on a patient who has suffered a bilateral lower leg amputation. Due to the complex injuries the left leg was heterotopically (cross-over) replanted to the right leg. At the left leg an above knee stump was created. In a second operation a soft tissue defect at the replanted extremity was covered by a free microvascular latissimus dorsi muscle fl

In avulsion amputations of the digits, soft-tissue injuries are extensive and often require tendon, nerve, and vessel transfers or grafts. The functional results of such digital replantations are frequently less than ideal. Therefore, avulsion amputation of a single digit proximal to the insertion of the flexor digitorum superficialis has been a contraindication to replantation, because the anticipated poor functional result may interfere with overall hand function, and is not worth the sacrifice of a tendon, nerve, or vessel from another digit or transfer. The authors report a patient with av

We describe the replantation of a traumatically severed auricle using microvascular anastomosis to reestablish blood flow to the ear. Microvascular reattachment of the severed auricle occurred 10 hours after the trauma. Postoperatively, adjunctive measures, including anticoagulation and the use of medicinal leeches, were used to relieve venous congestion of the replanted auricle. The replanted auricle healed completely with 100% survival, resulting in an essentially normal-appearing external ear. In the management of a traumatically severed auricle, microvascular replantation should be conside

A case of a totally amputated ear that was successfully replanted using microvascular anastomosis is reported. This is the sixth such case reported in the literature. This case varies from those of previous reports in that systemic heparinization was not administered and interpositional vein grafts were not used.

Amputations of the nose and of the auricle present difficult management problems. Application of simple reattachment techniques, followed by aggressive medical therapy which consists of cooling, anticoagulation, antibiotic coverage, and multiple stab incisions in the amputated tissues, have resulted in the successful replantation of major portions of an amputated nose and an amputated auricle with satisfactory cosmetic results.

A case of successful replantation of a totally avulsed scalp in a 19-year-old woman is presented. Although severely traumatized, about 90 percent of the surface of the replanted scalp survived. Only one artery (left superficial temporal) and four veins were anastomosed, sufficient enough to revascularize the entire scalp.

Sixty-two replantations of totally severed body parts in 25 patients were followed via serial radiography. Most of these replantations were of digits. Uncomplicated digital replantation showed a definite temporal pattern consisting initially of decreasing mineral content followed by increasing mineral content, decreasing soft-tissue swelling, and increasing callus formation. Deviations from the expected patterns were helpful in predicting complications such as infection and/or osteonecrosis.

571 replanted digits in 395 patients were critically evaluated from the point of view of the surgical technique, level of amputation, post-operative complications and the eventual functional end result. When the period of ischaemia exceeded 10 hours, the risk of failure was higher. Bone union was delayed in the digits in which the period of ischaemia was longer than 5 hours. Single thumb and multiple finger amputations were functionally most useful regardless of the level of amputation, the range of mobility or the sensory recovery. Single finger replantations resulted in poor function especia

Microvascular surgery has greatly altered the handling of scalp avulsions. Review of the injury mechanism and of successful replantations has yielded some basic axioms concerning treatment of this tragic injury. Generally, larger avulsions contain vessels that are easily identified and anastomosed, and therefore have a better prognosis. Long periods of ischemia do not appear to threaten graft viability. The superficial temporal artery is the most reliable artery for scalp replantation; accompanying veins can normally be used for venous drainage, though vein grafts are often needed due to vesse

Avulsion is a rare and serious traumatic dental injury that needs immediate and complex management. This case report highlights the successful management of an avulsed maxillary central incisor by replantation after a lapse of 120 minutes of being in an extra-oral environment and preserved in milk. A female patient aged 17 years presented with a traumatic dental injury sustained to the anterior maxillary region due to an accidental fall. Clinical examination revealed an avulsed tooth 21 that was replanted according to the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) guidelines and s

Survival rates of digital replantation vary in different regions and countries, and Asian surgeons see more challenging cases and have developed some unique methods. Replantation of multiple digits in one or both hands can follow a structure-by-structure method or a digit-by-digit method. For replanting all 10 digits, 3 or 4 teams should be organized. Flow-through flaps, often venous flaps, can be taken from the distal forearm or lower extremity to repair defects of soft tissues and arteries. A pedicled digital artery flap from the adjacent digit can also repair tissue defects and supply blood

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the application of microsurgical technique in the replantation of amputated ear.
METHODS: 7 cases of amputated ears were analyzed from June 2009 to April 2015 in our department. We used microsurgical technique to anastomose about five vessels and nerves. The blood supply of auricle was restored within three to six hours. All subjects underwent treatments including anti-freezing, anti-spasm and anti-infection treatment after the emergency surgery.
RESULTS: 7 amputated ears were all survived after replantation. The patients were followed up for one month to six months

AIM: To address the indications, contraindications, surgical procedure, complications following treatment, factors influencing the results and success rate of intentional replantation procedure.
BACKGROUND: Intentional replantation is extraction of a tooth to do extraoral root canal therapy, curettage of apical lesion when present, and its replacement in its socket. It has been proposed as an alternative to routine extraction; however, it should be considered a last resort because the root may be fractured during extraction.
RESULTS: The success rate of intentional replantation is far below
