Selective Breeding for Voluntary Wheel-Running Behavior in Mice is not Associated with Reduced Lifetime Reproductive Success or Lifespan Under Long-Term Paired Breeding Conditions.

We studied lifespan and lifetime reproductive success (LRS) in mice from a selection experiment that includes 4 replicate High Runner (HR) lines bred for voluntary wheel-running behavior and 4 non-selected Control (C) lines. HR mice typically run ~ threefold farther on a daily basis, leading to substantially increased energy expenditure and food consumption, and are also more active and eat more when housed without wheels. HR and C mice have been shown to differ for many other traits that could affect reproduction, including body mass and composition, aerobic capacity, hormonal profile (includ

Modified limited bedding and nesting is a model of early-life stress that affects reproductive physiology and behavior in female and male Long-Evans rats.

We used a modification of the limited bedding and nesting (LBN) model to evaluate the effects of early-life stress (ELS) on female and male reproductive physiology and behavior in Long-Evans rats. On postnatal day (PD) 2, dams and pups were transferred to a cage containing 100 mL of bedding (LBN condition) or to a cage containing 500 mL of bedding (control condition); bedding conditions remained until PD 10. In female rats, we measured vaginal opening, estrous cyclicity, female sexual behavior and motivation, and anxiety-like behavior. In male rats, we measured preputial separation, the develo

Mating Behavior and Reproductive Biology of Emerald Ash Borer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) and Two of Its Native Congeners, the Twolined Chestnut Borer and the Bronze Birch Borer.

We studied the mating behavior and reproductive biology of three members of the genus Agrilus: the bronze birch borer, Agrilus anxius Gory; the twolined chestnut borer, Agrilus bilineatus (Weber); and the emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire. All three species share a highly stereotyped mating behavior. However, the copulation duration of A. planipennis was 90% longer than that of its two congeners. Female reproductive tracts of the three species were anatomically similar, as were the spermatophores. Within the spermatophores, sperm were single in A. anxius and A. bilineatus, while

Field-Cage Evaluation of Survival, Reproduction, and Feeding Behavior of Adult Scymnus coniferarum (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), a Predator of Adelges tsugae (Hemiptera: Adelgidae).

The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand, is an invasive pest of eastern (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carrière) and Carolina hemlock (Tsuga caroliniana Engelmann) forests in the eastern United States. Scymnus (Pullus) coniferarum Crotch (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a lady beetle that preys on A. tsugae in the western United States, where A. tsugae infestations on western hemlocks are not lethal. It is thought that S. coniferarum could be an important predator that helps keep A. tsugae populations from reaching damaging levels in this region. This study assesses the potential of this preda

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System State-Added Questions: Leveraging an Existing Surveillance System to Improve Knowledge of Women's Reproductive Health.

As the prevalence of chronic conditions among women of reproductive age continues to rise, studies assessing the intersection of chronic disease and women's reproductive health status are increasingly needed. However, many data systems collect only limited information on women's reproductive health, thereby hampering the appraisal of risk and protective factors across the life span. One way to expand the study of women's health with minimal investment in time and resources is to integrate questions on reproductive health into existing surveillance systems. In 2013, previously validated questio

Peer-led sexual and reproductive health education and risky sexual behavior among adolescent girls and young women in rural Uganda: A quasi-experimental pre-post study.

Adolescent girls and young women face significant sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges. This study assessed the preliminary effectiveness of a community-based, peer-led SRH education intervention on risky sexual behaviors and comprehensive SRH knowledge among adolescent girls and young women aged 15-24 years in Moroto District, northeastern Uganda. From October 2024 to January 2025, we conducted a pre-post quasi-experiment study without a comparison group across six villages. Participants were selected through a multi-stage sampling approach and assessed at the baseline. They subseq

Determinants of intrauterine device use among reproductive-age women in a province implementing Islamic Sharia law in Indonesia: An application of the theory of planned behavior.

The utilization of the intrauterine device (IUD) in Indonesia remains low at 3.9%, despite its high effectiveness (99.4%) and designation as a national family planning priority, suggesting the presence of psychosocial barriers influencing contraceptive behavior among women of reproductive age. This study aimed to analyze psychosocial factors influencing IUD use behavior based on the theory of planned behavior, including attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, actual behavioral control, and intention, in Banda Aceh-the only province in Indonesia implementing holistic Sharia l

Linking antibiotic resistance genes in the vaginal microbiota to health-related behaviors and antibiotic awareness in reproductive-age women: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The vaginal microbiota (VMB), predominantly shaped by Lactobacillus species, plays a crucial role in maintaining vaginal health and preventing infections. However, its delicate balance is increasingly challenged by the widespread use of antibiotics and the consequent rise in antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). While the VMB has been recognized as a potential reservoir for ARGs, limited research has explored how microbial composition, antibiotic exposure, and individual behavioral factors converge to shape the vaginal resistome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional stud

Determining behavioral intention and its predictors toward preconception care use among reproductive age women in Arba Minch town, Southern Ethiopia, 2022: a cross-sectional study based on the theory of planned behavior.

BACKGROUND: Preconception care is a highly effective, evidence-based intervention aimed at promoting the health of reproductive-age women and reducing adverse pregnancy-related outcomes. The Ethiopian Ministry of Health plans to integrate preconception care services into the country's existing healthcare system. However, women's preferences may be influenced by their values and customs. Therefore, this study used the theory of planned behavior to assess women's intention toward preconception care use and its predictors among reproductive-age women in Arba Minch town, southern Ethiopia. HIV transmission behaviors, detectable HIV-RNA and curable STI prevalence among Ugandan men with HIV with reproductive goals, with and without infertility experiences.

Many men with HIV (MWH) want children. MWH with unmet reproductive goals may prioritize conception over preventing HIV/STI transmission. Therefore, we evaluated whether MWH with unmet versus met reproductive goals were more likely to have detectable HIV-RNA or STIs, and explored socio-structural factors (e.g., HIV/infertility stigma, gender dynamics) conceptualized to influence this association. We recruited 100 MWH in Uganda who reported condomless sex with intent to conceive, half had/had not fathered a child in the last year, defined as "met"/"unmet" reproductive goals. A questionnaire asse

Cigarette smoking women of reproductive age who use oral contraceptives: results from the 2002 and 2004 behavioral risk factor surveillance systems.

BACKGROUND: Despite health warnings about the increased risk of cerebrovascular disease among women who smoke while using oral contraceptives (OCs), prior research suggests that OC use is still prevalent among women who smoke cigarettes. Our objective was to investigate the prevalence of OC use among cigarette smoking women of reproductive age in the United States. STUDY DESIGN: We extracted data from the 2002 and 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys of 76,544 women between 18 and 44 years of age who reported using some form of contraception. The role of insulin-like growth factor-I and growth factor-associated signal transduction pathways in estradiol and progesterone facilitation of female reproductive behaviors.

We are examining the role of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and downstream signal transduction pathways associated with growth factors (e.g., mitogen-activated protein kinase, MAPK) in estradiol and progesterone facilitation of female reproductive behavior in rats. Brain IGF-I receptor activity is required for the long-term, priming actions of estradiol on the female reproductive axis. Infusions of an IGF-I receptor antagonist during estradiol priming blocks induction of hypothalamic alpha(1B)-adrenergic receptors and luteinizing hormone surges, and attenuates lordosis behavior. Infusion

Curriculum-based sexual and reproductive health education: revealing its relevance for risky sexual behaviors among secondary school students in Mwanza, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Secondary school students are vulnerable to risky sexual behaviors (RSBs) which may lead to adverse health consequences, such as teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV/AIDS. In Tanzania, the burden of teenage pregnancy was reported to be 27% in 2016. The integration of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education into the school curriculum is one of the proven crucial interventions. However, there is limited information on the extent to which curriculum-based SRH education is relevant for fostering good practices for coping with RSBs. This stu

RNAi-mediated knockdown of arginine kinase genes leads to high mortality and negatively affect reproduction and blood-feeding behavior of Culex pipiens pallens.

BACKGROUND: Arginine kinase (AK) is one of the crucial enzymes involved in energy metabolism in invertebrates, and has been proposed as the target for RNA interference (RNAi)-based control of agricultural insect pests. While there is only one AK gene in most insects, two AK genes were identified in Culex pipiens pallens, the primary vector of lymphatic filariasis and epidemic encephalitis. METHODS: The full-length cDNA sequences of CpAK1 and CpAK2 genes were obtained by reverse transcription PCR(RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The expression levels of CpAK1 and CpAK2 in d

Exposure of Adult Female Mice to Low Doses of di(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate Alone or in an Environmental Phthalate Mixture: Evaluation of Reproductive Behavior and Underlying Neural Mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: We have previously shown that adult male mice exposure to low doses of an ubiquitous endocrine disruptor, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), alters courtship behavior. OBJECTIVE: The effects of adult exposure to low doses of DEHP alone or in an environmental phthalate mixture on estrous cyclicity, reproductive behavior, and underlying neural structures were analyzed in female mice. METHODS: Two-month-old C57BL/6J females were exposed orally for 6 wk to DEHP alone (0, 5 or 50μg/kg/d) or to DEHP (5μg/kg/d) in a phthalate mixture. Estrous cyclicity was analyzed in intact mice, and b

Melatonin alleviates Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate induced male reproductive toxicity through inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum stress: Behavioral, biochemical, and morphological evidences.

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is one of the most commonly used plasticizers known for its effect on reproductive systems. The underlying molecular mechanism of DEHP-induced male reproductive toxicity is still less explored. Melatonin (Mel), a neurohormone possessing antioxidant properties, has demonstrated reproprotective effect in various studies. In this study, the underlying molecular mechanisms of DEHP induced reproductive toxicity and reproprotective effect of melatonin were investigated. Adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four experimental groups: control, DEHP-500 mg/

Long-term carbaryl exposure leads to behavioral abnormalities and reproductive toxicity in male marine medaka through apoptosis-mediated HPA and HPG axes dysregulation.

Carbaryl is a widely used carbamate pesticide that has been detected in the marine environment, but its effects on marine fish are still unknown. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of long-term exposure of carbaryl on male marine medaka. For this purpose, we set up five exposure concentration groups of 0, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 µg/L for 180 days. On the one hand, we observed increased aggression and decreased ability to avoid predators in males after exposure, which was affected by the levels of HPA-axis hormones, especially decreased cortisol level. On the other hand, after exposure
