Extracellular Vesicles in Human Reproduction in Health and Disease.

Extensive evidence suggests that the release of membrane-enclosed compartments, more commonly known as extracellular vesicles (EVs), is a potent newly identified mechanism of cell-to-cell communication both in normal physiology and in pathological conditions. This review presents evidence about the formation and release of different EVs, their definitive markers and cargo content in reproductive physiological processes, and their capacity to convey information between cells through the transfer of functional protein and genetic information to alter phenotype and function of recipient cells ass

Cervicovaginal Microbiota and Reproductive Health: The Virtue of Simplicity.

Cervicovaginal microbiota play a critical role in women's health and reproductive outcomes. Despite being one of the simplest commensal bacterial communities in the human body, we are only beginning to appreciate its complex dynamic nature and important role in host immune modulation. In this review, we discuss the "optimal" cervicovaginal bacterial community composition, the impact of microbiota on gynecologic and obstetric outcomes, and the hurdles to developing a deeper mechanistic understanding of the function of the cervicovaginal microbiome. We then describe efforts to durably alter micr

The role of the bacterial microbiota on reproductive and pregnancy health.

Recent assessments have examined the composition of bacterial communities influencing reproductive, pregnancy and infant health. The Microbiome Project has made great strides in sequencing the microbiome and identifying the vast communities of microorganisms that inhabit our bodies and much work continues to examine the individual contribution of bacteria on health and disease to inform future therapies. This review explores the current literature outlining the contribution of important bacteria on reproductive health among sexually active men and women, outlines gaps in current research to de

Sexual and reproductive health: a matter of life and death.

Despite the call for universal access to reproductive health at the 4th International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994, sexual and reproductive health was omitted from the Millennium Development Goals and remains neglected (panel 1). Unsafe sex is the second most important risk factor for disability and death in the world's poorest communities and the ninth most important in developed countries. Cheap effective interventions are available to prevent unintended pregnancy, provide safe abortions, help women safely through pregnancy and child birth, and prevent and treat

An overview of reproductive health of women in Bajhang district.

Reproductive health is not merely an absence of disease or disorder, rather it is a condition in which reproductive process is accomplished in a state of complete physical, mental and social well being according to WHO. Reproductive morbidity encompasses obstetric morbidity including conditions during pregnancy, delivery and the post-partum period; and gynecological morbidity including conditions of the reproductive tract such as reproductive-tract infections, cervical cell changes, genital prolapse, malignancies and infertility. The first step towards achieving the needs of women as consumers

[Indications for the evaluation of reproductive health and pertinent programs].

This report presents a set of indicators to aid in the assessment of reproductive health and its associated programs in developing countries. The indicators basically stem from the accords ratified at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), which was held in 1994 for the purpose of improving the reproductive health status of women, men, and adolescents throughout the world. However, working drafts and ways of approaching the subject were developed in 1996 at several meetings of representatives of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), bilateral agencies, and non

Couples and reproductive health: a review of couple studies.

Traditionally, fertility and family planning research and programs have focused on women. With the expansion of the field to include reproductive health following the 1994 International Conference on Population in Cairo, the more appropriate focus for most reproductive health components appears to be the sexually active couple. This review of studies of couples and reproductive health outcomes examines reports of objective reproductive events, of attitudes and reproductive intentions, of the effect of each partner's attitudes and intentions, of reproductive outcomes, and of the effectiveness o

Budgeting for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights under universal health coverage.

Achieving universal health coverage (UHC) for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) requires informed budgeting that is aligned with UHC objectives. We draw data from Adding It Up 2019 (AIU-2019) to provide critical new country-level and regional, intervention-specific costs for the provision of SRH services. AIU-2019 is a cost-outcomes analysis, undertaken from the health system perspective, which estimates the costs and impacts of offering SRH care in low- and middle-income countries. We present direct cost estimates for 109 SRH interventions and find that human resources comprise the largest

Gut-testis axis: how microbiota influence male reproductive health.

The intestinal flora forms a complex ecosystem that interacts with the host, influencing health and fitness through mechanisms that connect with distant organs like the brain, liver, muscles, and testes. The gut microbiota plays a vital role in regulating androgen production and metabolism, and can cross the blood-testis barrier to influence spermatogenesis. This review highlights the significance of the gut-testis axis in male reproductive and sexual health, based on extensive studies exploring how gut microbes impact testicular function. Gaining this understanding deepens our knowledge of th

Microplastic exposure and female reproductive health: A scientific review.

As a global pollutant, microplastics (MPs) are widely distributed in the natural environment and human tissues, and their potential threat to female reproductive health has gradually become an important issue in the field of public health. The distribution, health effects and toxic mechanisms of MPs in female reproductive system were reviewed in this paper. MPs can penetrate the placental barrier, interfere with fetal development, and increase the risk of pregnancy complications. In ovaries, MPs induce granulosa cell apoptosis and disrupt follicular development, leading to hormonal imbalance a

Reproductive Coercion and Associated Health Consequences: A Scoping Review.

Reproductive coercion (RC) broadly encompasses behaviors that interfere with a person's reproductive choices, including control over contraception, pregnancy, and pregnancy outcomes, and can pose considerable health risks. However, its full impact on health remains insufficiently understood. This scoping review systematically examined empirical literature on the health consequences of RC published between 2010 and 2024. Following JBI methodology and Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines, we searched five database

Integrating sexual and reproductive health into pre-travel consultations.

BACKGROUND: Casual sex during travel is a major preventable factor in the global transmission of sexually transmissible infections (STI). Pre-travel consults present an excellent opportunity for practitioners to educate travellers about sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and safety. This scoping review aims to explore and understand the extent to which SRH is included in pre-travel consultations. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Scopus, Medline and Web of Science were systematically searched for primary research articles exploring whether he
