Natural history and risk factors associated with early and established HIV type 1 infection among reproductive-age women in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Data evaluating the biological events and determinants of early human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection are limited in sub-Saharan Africa. We examined plasma viral levels and trends during early and established HIV-1 infection among reproductive-age women who participated in a randomized trial to treat genital tract infection in Malawi. We also assessed the association of injectable hormonal contraceptive use with HIV-1 infection. METHODS: We studied 3 groups of women who were infected or uninfected with HIV-1: seroconverters, seroprevalent women, and seronegative wo

Evaluating the History-Taking Process of Sexual Reproductive Health Problems in Tanzania: Lessons from a Study of Health Students and Practitioners.

Building trust and therapeutic relationships between healthcare providers and patients are crucial for delivering high-quality, comprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Yet, while patients face substantial SRH disparities in Tanzania, little is known about health care professionals' [HCPs] SRH history-taking practices and experiences. This paper describes HCPs' interdisciplinary practices, experience in conducting SRH taking, and the critical lessons learned to optimize quality SRH care. We conducted 18 focus group discussions in June 2019 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with 6

Reproductive history, infertility treatment, and the risk of acute leukemia in children with down syndrome: a report from the Children's Oncology Group.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome (DS) have from 10 to 20 times the risk of developing acute leukemia than the general pediatric population. There is mixed evidence for associations between reproductive history or infertility and acute leukemia among children without DS. METHODS: The authors conducted a case-control study of acute leukemia among children with DS to investigate possible risk factors in this population. From 1997 to 2002, 158 children aged <20 years with DS who had a diagnosis of acute leukemia (97 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia [ALL] and 61 children with acut

Association of body mass index, physical activity, and reproductive histories with breast cancer: a case-control study in Gifu, Japan.

To further clarify risk factors for breast cancer in Japanese women, a self-administered questionnaire was completed by 157 cases with histologically confirmed breast cancer from 1989 to 1993 and by 369 age and residential area matched controls in Gifu, Japan. Conditional logistic regression model was used to assess the relations. Multivariate analyses showed that breast cancer risk decreased with body mass index for premenopausal women (RR = 0.45; 95 % CI = 0.22-0.92 for BMI > or = 23 vs. < 21 (kg/m2)), but the risk increased with body mass index for postmenopausal women (RR = 1.98; 95 % CI =

A case-control study of breast cancer among Japanese women: with special reference to family history and reproductive and dietary factors.

To study the effects of family history and reproductive, anthropometric, and dietary factors on the risk of breast cancer among low risk populations, we conducted a hospital-based case-control study involving 908 patients with breast cancer and their matched controls, in Japan. A positive family history of breast cancer significantly increased the risk of breast cancer (odds ratio = 1.52, 95% confidence interval: 1.14-2.03). The risk further increased with increasing number of family members affected. Obesity, single marital status, fewer births, a late childbirth, and less consumption of gree

Phenotypic differences in upper genital tract abnormalities and reproductive history in dizygotic twins exposed to diethylstilbestrol in utero. A case report.

Major phenotypic variations in reproductive function and upper genital tract abnormalities were found between 30-year-old dizygotic twins exposed in utero to diethylstilbestrol (DES). The women were exposed to maternal DES doses of 12.5-50.0 mg daily starting from the 12th gestational week as documented in the original antepartum obstetric office records. Twin A had primary involuntary infertility of over four years' duration associated with a severe DES uterine deformity on hysterosalpingography (HSG). A complete evaluation demonstrated all other infertility investigations to be normal. Twin

Cow attributes, herd management, and reproductive history events associated with the risk of nonpregnancy in cow-calf herds in Western Canada.

To identify herd management and cow characteristics associated with the reproductive success of cow-calf herds in Western Canada, 33,391 beef cows were followed from the beginning of the breeding season in 2001 through pregnancy testing in 2002. Breeding management and cow-level risk factors such as age, body condition score (BCS), and previous reproductive history, were measured through a series of herd visits by project personnel and records maintained by the herd owner. Pregnancy status was measured in 205 herds in the fall of 2001 and again in 200 herds in the fall of 2002. Cows least like

Reproductive history, oral contraceptive use, and the risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic stoke in a cohort study of middle-aged Swedish women.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Controversy persists as to whether oral contraceptive (OC) use and reproductive history play a role in the etiology of stroke, particularly ischemic stroke. Our aim was to investigate this question in a cohort of middle-aged Swedish women. METHODS: The Women's Lifestyle and Health Cohort Study included 49259 Swedish women, aged 30 to 49 years at baseline (1991 to 1992). Participants completed an extensive questionnaire and were traced through linkages to national registries until the end of 2004. RESULTS: Among the 45699 women included in these analyses, there were 28

Risk of colon cancer associated with a family history of cancer or colorectal polyps: the diet, activity, and reproduction in colon cancer study.

The Diet, Activity, and Reproduction in Colon Cancer (DARCC) study is a large, multi-center case-control study of colon cancer. We examined family histories of cancer among first-degree relatives obtained by computer-assisted in-person interviews from the DARCC to study the impact of family histories of several cancers and colorectal polyps on colon cancer risk. We examined familial cancer risks both by treating a family history of polyps or cancer as a covariate in a logistic regression model, and by comparing cancer or polyp incidence among relatives of cases to incidence among relatives of

No genome-wide correlations and little shared genetic architecture between reproductive life-history traits and estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer risk.

Estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer (ER + BC) is one of the most prevalent cancers, but the evolutionary processes shaping genetic variation in ER + BC risk are poorly understood. Both evolutionary life-history theory and evidence from studies of individual ER + BC risk variants suggest that increased genetic ER + BC risk is associated with faster maturation, earlier reproduction, and/or increased reproductive success (i.e. there is a trade-off), but it is unclear how well this pattern is replicated when considering the polygenic architecture of these traits after controlling for potentia

Association between history of interparental violence and alcohol abuse among reproductive-age women: Evidence from the Peruvian Demographic and Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to domestic violence by triggering repetitive distress and fear can affect neurodevelopmental and mental health in the short and long term. This, in turn, has been linked to an increased risk of substance abuse, such as alcohol abuse in adulthood. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the association between exposure to violence from the father toward the mother and alcohol abuse in Peruvian women. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from the Peruvian Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) of 2019. A total of

Moving from peripheral blood to local uterine immunophenotype analysis in patients with poor reproductive history: pilot study of a novel technique.

BACKGROUND: A complete reproductive immunophenotype is poorly described, with most focus on peripheral blood natural killer cells rather than uterine populations. There is debate regarding normal endometrial levels, with no consensus, and much controversy on correlation with implantation/miscarriage. AIMS: Development and validation of a rapid endometrial assessment flow cytometry (FCM) technique, allowing determination of local lymphocyte subset ranges, comparison to peripheral blood, and patient subgroup analysis. METHODS: Prospective pilot, assessing patients with prior implantation, fail

Association between lifestyle, menstrual/reproductive history, and histological factors and risk of breast cancer in women biopsied for benign breast disease.

PURPOSE: Women with benign breast disease (BBD) have an increased risk of subsequent breast cancer. However, whether conventional breast cancer risk factors influence risk of breast cancer among women with BBD is unclear. In this study, we investigated the associations of lifestyle, menstrual/reproductive, and histological factors with risk of breast cancer among women biopsied for BBD. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study, nested within a cohort of 15,395 women biopsied for BBD at Kaiser Permanente Northwest between 1971 and 2006. Cases were women who developed a subsequent invasive br
