Developmentally regulated thyroid hormone distributor proteins in marsupials, a reptile, and fish.

Thyroid hormones are essential for vertebrate development. There is a characteristic rise in thyroid hormone levels in blood during critical periods of thyroid hormone-regulated development. Thyroid hormones are lipophilic compounds, which readily partition from an aqueous environment into a lipid environment. Thyroid hormone distributor proteins are required to ensure adequate distribution of thyroid hormones, throughout the aqueous environment of the blood, and to counteract the avid partitioning of thyroid hormones into the lipid environment of cell membranes. In human blood, these proteins

Reptile envenomation 20-year mortality as reported by US medical examiners.

OBJECTIVES: Accurate reptile envenomation mortality data for the United States is unavailable. Using data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS), deaths from 1979 through 1998 were analyzed. METHODS: Records of deaths from reptile envenomation were selected using matches to code E905.0 of the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision. Data for the US population was taken from the 2000 US census estimates. RESULTS: The National Vital Statistics System identified 97 deaths from venomous reptile bites that occurred during the study period. Texas (n = 17), Florida (n = 1

The cDNA cloning and molecular evolution of reptile and pigeon lactate dehydrogenase isozymes.

The cDNAs encoding lactate dehydrogenase isozymes LDH-A (muscle) and LDH-B (heart) from alligator and turtle and LDH-A, LDH-B, and LDH-C (testis) from pigeon were cloned and sequenced. The evolutionary relationships among vertebrate LDH isozymes were analyzed. Contrary to the traditional belief that the turtle lineage branched off before the divergence between the lizard/alligator and bird lineages, the turtle lineage was found to be clustered with either the alligator lineage or the alligator-bird clade, while the lizard lineage was found to have branched off before the divergence between the

Anatomical identification of a postsynaptic dorsal column system in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus.

The presence of a postsynaptic dorsal column system was investigated in reptiles, Caiman crocodilus. Several experiments were undertaken. First, a cytoarchitectonic analysis of the spinal cord was performed to identify its laminar organization. Second, the termination of dorsal root fibers in the dorsal horn of the upper cervical cord, brachial enlargement, and lumbar intumescence was studied utilizing anterograde tracing techniques. Third, placement of retrograde tracers into the dorsal column nucleus identified spinal cord neurons that projected to the dorsal column nucleus. These experiment

Morphological and GAD immunocytochemical properties of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus in a reptile.

Morphological and glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) immunocytochemical properties of the dorsal part of the lateral geniculate nucleus were investigated in reptiles, Caiman crocodilus. GAD immunoreactive neurons, although sparse, were found in the dorsal part of the lateral geniculate nucleus. In addition, puncta and fibers immunoreactive for GAD were also observed in this same nucleus. These results in Caiman utilizing GAD are similar to observations on the dorsal part of the lateral geniculate nucleus of other reptiles in which antisera to gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) were used.

Thalamic projections from a midbrain somatosensory area in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus.

Ascending projections to the thalamus from a midbrain somatosensory area were investigated in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus. Connections were determined utilizing horseradish peroxidase (HRP) neurohistochemistry in which tetramethylbenzidine was the chromogen. Anterograde experiments, in which HRP injections were placed into the midbrain, revealed bilateral projections to the medialis complex of the dorsal thalamus. These observations were confirmed by HRP injections into the medialis complex which retrogradely labeled neurons in the midbrain somatosensory area bilaterally. An ipsilateral predo

Convergence in reduced body size, head size, and blood glucose in three island reptiles.

Many oceanic islands harbor diverse species that differ markedly from their mainland relatives with respect to morphology, behavior, and physiology. A particularly common morphological change exhibited by a wide range of species on islands worldwide involves either a reduction in body size, termed island dwarfism, or an increase in body size, termed island gigantism. While numerous instances of dwarfism and gigantism have been well documented, documentation of other morphological changes on islands remains limited. Furthermore, we lack a basic understanding of the physiological mechanisms that

A Single Residue in Ebola Virus Receptor NPC1 Influences Cellular Host Range in Reptiles.

Filoviruses are the causative agents of an increasing number of disease outbreaks in human populations, including the current unprecedented Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in western Africa. One obstacle to controlling these epidemics is our poor understanding of the host range of filoviruses and their natural reservoirs. Here, we investigated the role of the intracellular filovirus receptor, Niemann-Pick C1 (NPC1) as a molecular determinant of Ebola virus (EBOV) host range at the cellular level. Whereas human cells can be infected by EBOV, a cell line derived from a Russell's viper (Daboia

Minimal volume regulation after shrinkage of red blood cells from five species of reptiles.

Red blood cells (RBCs) from most vertebrates restore volume upon hypertonic shrinkage and the mechanisms underlying this regulatory volume increase (RVI) have been studied extensively in these cells. Despite the phylogenetically interesting position of reptiles, very little is known about their red cell function. The present study demonstrates that oxygenated RBCs in all major groups of reptiles exhibit no or a very reduced RVI upon approximately 25% calculated hyperosmotic shrinkage. Thus, RBCs from the snakes Crotalus durissus and Python regius, the turtle Trachemys scripta and the alligator

Introduction of potential heartwater vectors and other exotic ticks into Florida on imported reptiles.

Following the discovery of establishment of the African tortoise tick Amblyomma marmoreum in Florida, the present study was undertaken to determine the extent of introduction of exotic ticks into Florida on imported reptiles. Exotic ticks were identified on 29 (91%) of 32 reptile premises in 18 counties of Florida. The ticks, found on a variety of imported tortoises, snakes, and monitor lizards, belonged to 4 Amblyomma species (A. marmoreum, Amblyomma nuttalli, Amblyomma sabanerae, and Amblyomma sparsum) and 4 Aponomma species (Aponomma exornatum, Aponomma flavomaculatum, Aponomma latum, and A

The microsomal mixed function oxidase system of amphibians and reptiles: components, activities and induction.

This article reviews current research in amphibian and reptilian cytochromes P450, important to the overall understanding of xenobiotic metabolism in the ecosystem and the evolution of P450s. Amphibians and reptilians contain the normal mixed function oxidase system (MFO). In general the MFO content and activities are less than those found in mammals, but only a few of the known activities have been examined in these vertebrate classes. Research to date has focused on two families of cytochromes P450, CYP1 and 2. The isoforms examined catalyze the classic activities but there have been notable

Pretectal and accessory-optic visual nuclei of fish, amphibia and reptiles: theme and variations.

The organization of the accessory optic and pretectal circuits is surveyed in a variety of poikilotherms and the conclusion drawn that a common organizational pattern exists. This pattern consists of the presence of three optic pretectal nuclei located rostrocaudally in lateral-superficial, central and dorsomedial (or periventricular) positions. Furthermore, a well-defined basal optic tract and ventrolaterally placed terminal field at the level of the oculomotor nucleus appears to be a consistent feature among bony fish, amphibians and reptiles. The possible role of these circuits in in visuom

Methemoglobin reduction in crocodile blood: are high levels of MetHb typical of healthy reptiles?

In 82 wild-caught Crocodylus porosus, levels of NADH-MetHb reductase and GSH seem adequate to maintain hemoglobin in its reduced functional state. Studies of C. porosus erythrocytes in vitro show reduction of metHb in the presence of lactate, glucose and plasma, but not pyruvate. These findings, together with recent data which show low metHb in a variety of reptiles, cast doubt on the accepted view that high levels of MetHb are typical of healthy reptiles. One explanation for the sharp contrast between earlier and more recent data could be technical. We found low metHb in Crocodylus johnstoni,

Multiple paternity is related to adult sex ratio and sex determination system in reptiles.

The adult sex ratio (ASR, the proportion of males in the adult population) is an emerging predictor of reproductive behaviour, and recent studies in birds and humans suggest it is a major driver of social mating systems and parental care. ASR may also influence genetic mating systems. For instance male-skewed ASRs are expected to increase the frequency of multiple paternity (defined here as a clutch or litter sired by two or more males) due to higher rates of coercive copulations by males, and/or due to females exploiting the opportunity of copulation with multiple males to increase genetic di

Tongue worm (subclass: Pentastomida) infection and treatment in two domesticated reptiles - A case report.

Tongue worms (Subclass: Pentastomida) are endoparasites found in carnivorous reptiles, fish, amphibians, birds, and mammals. Several pentastomids cause pentastomiasis, a zoonotic disease. We encountered tongue worm infection in two reptiles imported into Japan: a Wahlberg's velvet gecko (Homopholis wahlbergii) bred in Germany and a wild-caught green tree python (Morelia viridis) from the Republic of Indonesia. The infecting tongue worms were identified as Raillietiella sp. and Armillifer sp. in the gecko and python, respectively, based on morphological and molecular analyses. Gecko is a newly

Purinoceptors exert negative inotropic effects on the heart in all major groups of reptiles.

The few and fragmentary studies on purinergic regulation of the reptile heart have reached equivocal conclusions. Indeed, unlike fish, amphibians, and mammals, it has been suggested that the turtle heart lacks purinoceptors. Here, we study the effect of adenosine and ATP on isolated heart strips from three species of reptiles: the red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta), the ball python (Python regius) and the spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus). Both adenosine and ATP markedly decreased contractility in atria from all three species. This was attenuated by theophylline, suggesting that the resp

Exploring the Diversity and Function of Serine Proteases in Toxicofera Reptile Venoms: A Comprehensive Overview.

Toxicofera reptile venoms are composed of several toxins, including serine proteases. These proteases are glycosylated enzymes that affect the prey's hemostatic system. Their actions extend across the coagulation cascade, the kallikrein-kinin system, and platelet activation. Despite their specificity for different substrates, these enzymes are homologous across all toxicoferans and display high sequence similarity. The aim of this review is to compile decades of knowledge about venom serine proteases, showing the diversity of biochemically and biophysically characterized enzymes, their structu
