Barriers to Research Recruitment of Women Experiencing a Pregnancy Loss in the Emergency Department.

Women often come to the emergency department (ED) with signs and symptoms suggesting an early pregnancy loss; yet, little is known about their experience and how it relates to future outcomes. To improve patient outcomes and experiences of women seeking care for a pregnancy loss, research is required. However, recruitment of participants experiencing an event such as a pregnancy loss is challenging. The purpose of this article is to discuss the application of an electronic medical record (EMR)-based participant screening tool recruiting women seeking care for a pregnancy loss in the ED. This s

Correlates of lower comprehension of informed consent among participants enrolled in a cohort study in Pune, India.

BACKGROUND: Optimum comprehension of informed consent by research participants is essential yet challenging. This study explored correlates of lower comprehension of informed consent among 1334 participants of a cohort study aimed at estimating HIV incidence in Pune, India. METHODS: As part of the informed consent process, a structured comprehension tool was administered to study participants. Participants scoring ≥90% were categorised into the 'optimal comprehension group', whilst those scoring 80-89% were categorised into the 'lower comprehension group'. Data were analysed to identify socio

Unanswered questions and ethical issues concerning US biodefence research.

Unanswered questions and ethical issues associated with US biodefence medical research over the past five decades are discussed. Objective scientific standards are essential for making policy decisions that can stand the test of time. For decades, scholars have reported that the human anthrax vaccine field trials conducted in the 1950s by Brachman and his colleagues were single-blind rather than double-blind. Nevertheless, in March 2005, Dr Philip S Brachman reported in a letter to the US Food and Drug Administration that his study had been double-blind. It is here argued that, rather, the fie

Integrating enhanced hepatitis C testing and counselling in research.

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) affects over 170 million people worldwide. In Australia, over 225,000 people have been diagnosed with HCV infection with 13,000 infections reported annually; 90% are attributed to injecting drug use. Burnet Institute (BI) researchers have been studying the HCV epidemic since the virus was identified in 1989 including community based cohort studies (1990-1995), numerous studies involving Vietnamese-Australian people who inject drugs (PWID) (1996-2004) and social network studies (2000-2002, 2005-2007). Through this work the BI has developed a model of research practic

Comparison of thoracolumbar spine kinematics and injuries in reclined frontal impact sled tests between mid-size adult female and male PMHS.

Disparities in injury tolerance and kinematic response remain understudied despite field data highlighting sex-based differences in injury risk. Furthermore, the automotive industry anticipates occupants will prefer reclined seating in highly automated vehicles. This study aimed to compare thoracolumbar spine kinematics and injuries between mid-size female and male post-mortem human subjects (PMHS) in reclined frontal impacts. Seven adult PMHS (three female, four male) were tested in reclined (50°) 50 km/h frontal impacts. The PMHS were seated on a semi-rigid seat and restrained by a prototype

Research participants' perspectives about the return of uninformative genomic test results in a clinical research setting.

The majority of genomic sequencing and microarray results are clinically uninformative, meaning that they do not suggest a need for any behavioral action or medical intervention. Prior studies have shown that recipients of uninformative genomic testing results ("uninformative results" hereafter) may incorrectly interpret them to imply a lowered risk of disease or false reassurance about future health risks. Few studies have examined how patients understand uninformative results when they are returned in a research setting, where there is wide variation in analytical specifications of testing,

A systematic review of cranioplasty material toxicity in human subjects.

PURPOSE: Local and systemic toxic reactions to implanted materials can result in morbidities. However, little is reported about cranioplasty implants. Therefore, we performed a systematic review on the toxicity of different materials used for cranioplasty implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted by browsing the Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. All human studies that identified toxic (aseptic) reactions to any types of material used as cranioplasty implants or onplants, published up to January 1, 2019, were included in the review. RESULTS: Nineteen stu

Trends in gambling studies research: quantifying, categorizing, and describing citations.

As opportunities to gamble have increased during the 20th century, so has gambling research. This study used new strategies, methods, and technology to examine citation trends and the growth of knowledge in the field of gambling studies. The sample included 2,246 citations that were published between 1903 and 2003. By using multiple keywords to classify each citation into distinct topic areas, this study yielded a more comprehensive analysis than was previously available. The results reveal that gambling-related research has grown at an exponential rate. The most prevalent topics explored with

The ethical inadequacy of uninformed surrogate consent: advancing respect for persons in clinical research.

In clinical research, decision-making capacity is often equated with unspecified conceptions of autonomy, and autonomy is often equated with personhood. On this view, the loss of decision-making capacity is seen as a loss of autonomy, and the loss of autonomy subsumes a loss of personhood. An ethical concern arises at the intersection of those philosophical considerations with the legal considerations in informed consent. Because persons with inadequate decision-making capacity cannot provide legally effective consent, enrollment in research can occur only if a surrogate gives permission on th

Predicting the number of article citations on the topic of pemphigus vulgaris with the 100 top-cited articles since 2011: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a rare autoimmune blistering disease characterized by intraepithelial and mucocutaneous blister formation and erosion. Numerous articles related to PV have been published. However, which articles have a tremendous influence is still unknown, and factors affecting article citation numbers remain unclear. We aimed to visualize the prominent entities using the top 100 most-cited articles on the topic of PV (T100PV), and investigate whether medical subject headings (i.e., MeSH terms) can be used to predict article citations. METHODS: By searching the PubMed

Attitudes of Patients With Gastrointestinal Cancers Toward Research Biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Research biopsies are an increasingly important component of clinical trials, but there are concerns that biopsies may deter patients from participating in research. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients participating in a single-center study investigating the feasibility of molecular profiling in advanced gastrointestinal cancers were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their reasons for consenting/declining optional research biopsies and blood samples. These samples were mainly for exploratory translational research and were unlikely to influence patients' treatment. RESULTS:

Children's views on their involvement in clinical research.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the level of children's understanding of informed consent in clinical trials and factors that may influence these processes. DESIGN: Twenty nine children who were included in clinical trials for treatment of cancer or HIV, were offered the possibility to complete a semidirective interview, with parental permission. METHODS: Children's understanding was measured by a score of 0-9 including items required to obtain a valid consent according to French and European legislations. RESULTS: Children were 8.5-18 years old (13.6 +/- 2.8 years). The higher percentage of understa

Certificates of confidentiality: a valuable tool for protecting genetic data.

Protecting the confidentiality of genetic research data is an important aspect of genetic research that has been discussed in various forums. Research data must be protected to prevent discrimination and its use in litigation. The certificate of confidentiality was created to protect the subjects of alcohol- and drug-abuse studies, who may be engaging in illegal activities. As revised in 1988, the certificate protects investigators engaging in other kinds of studies from being compelled to reveal information about subjects. Because the certificate protects information that could damage a subje

The Belmont Report at 40: Reckoning With Time.

It was the summer of 1972 when a stunned nation first learned of the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study, during which hundreds of poor, disease-stricken black men from Macon County Alabama, had been deliberately left untreated for 40 years. Coming on the heels of multiple, earlier examples of unethical human experimentation, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study made it plain that the moral foundation of human subject research was in desperate need of repair. Blind reliance on the Nuremberg Code and the Declaration of Helsinki was no longer going to suffice. It was against this backdrop that Congress reso

The development of the DISCO-RC for measuring children's discomfort during research procedures.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for data on children's self-reported discomfort in clinical research, helping ethics committees to make their evaluation of discomfort described in study protocols evidence-based. Since there is no appropriate instrument to measure children's discomfort during medical research procedures, we aimed to develop a generic, short and child-friendly instrument: the DISCO-RC questionnaire (DISCOmfort in Research with Children). METHODS: This article describes the six steps of the development of the DISCO-RC. First, we updated a literature search on children's self-reporte

Children's Views on Long-Term Screening for Type 1 Diabetes.

There are an increasing number of medical research studies involving children, including many long-term birth cohort studies. Involving children raises many issues, and little is known about children's own views. This study explored children's views (N = 5,851) on participation in a long-term screening study for type 1 diabetes. The results show that children 10 to 13 years of age have in general a positive attitude to pediatric research and emphasized trust in researchers. The children stressed the importance to receive information and to be involved in decisions. The children also reported f

Internet recruitment and retention for a 6 months' longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: To examine factors influencing recruitment and retention of study participants in a longitudinal study. METHODS: After completion of a longitudinal (6 months) study of long-term indwelling urinary catheter users, three types of data were analyzed: number of problems with data entry into an online survey, number of reminders sent by study staff to participants, and number and nature of e-mail contacts between participants and study staff and among study staff regarding the study. CONCLUSIONS: The Internet can be used effectively for research, especially involving small, specialized p
