Knowledge to Impact: From Conceptualizing to Mobilizing the Saskatchewan Caregiver Experience Study.

OBJECTIVES: Given the rising number of older adults reliant on family and friend caregivers (i.e., those who provide informal care), the Saskatchewan Caregiver Experience Study aimed to examine the experiences of these caregivers in Saskatchewan and identify unmet needs. This paper describes our knowledge translation and mobilization efforts of our study's findings. METHODS: Researchers partnered with the Saskatoon Council on Aging (SCOA) to conduct the study, recruiting 355 family and friend caregivers. We evaluated impacts across conceptualization, data collection and knowledge mobilization

Reshaping transplantation with AI, emerging technologies and xenotransplantation.

Organ transplantation remains the sole definitive treatment for many forms of end-stage organ failure, yet donor organ shortages impose life-threatening delays for thousands of patients worldwide. Mechanical supports and dialysis provide only temporary respite, while lifelong immunosuppression poses additional risks-including infections, malignancies and considerable healthcare costs. Recent innovations hold promise for overcoming these barriers. Artificial intelligence tools increasingly guide organ allocation decisions by integrating clinical, demographic and immunological data. They also re

A novel drive-through approach to vaccination of children and young people with neurodevelopmental disability.

Disparities in preventative health care likely contribute to comorbidities associated with neurodevelopmental disability. These comorbidities are risk factors for poor outcomes of COVID-19, making COVID-19 vaccination a priority for this population. In mid-2021, the Australian Technical Advisory Group (ATAGI) recommended the COVID-19 vaccination rollout include children and young people at risk of severe COVID-19 associated disease. This cohort included children/young people severely immunocompromised, with disability, and/or complex, multiple health conditions. Children and young people with

Helping Families Cope with the Severe Stress of Dravet Syndrome.

A child with Dravet syndrome shakes family life to the core. Dravet syndrome usually has three phases: (1) up to 1-1½ years: with episodes of febrile status epilepticus but normal development; (2) age 1½ to ~6-10 years: with frequent seizures of varying types, developmental stagnation, behavioural and sleep problems; (3) after ~10 years: improvement in seizures, deteriorating gait, intellectual disability but some developmental gains. Complete seizure control is rare-simply prescribing medication is inadequate to help families. Based on structured interviews with 24 families and confirmed by m

"Out of sight, out of mind": a qualitative study of visual impairment and dementia from three perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Dementia and visual impairment are among the most common medical conditions in later life. Almost nothing is known about the experiences and needs of older adults with both conditions. METHOD: In this qualitative study using in-depth individual interviews, multiple perspectives were sought through a case-study approach. Fifty-two interviews were conducted: 17 with older adults with visual impairment and dementia, 17 with family caregivers, and 18 with care professionals. RESULTS: Impaired memory and a lack of visual cues created profound disorientation and distress, which could b

Lonely boats swaying in the storm: experiences and supportive needs of adult only-children confronting parental end-of-life care: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: After nearly four decades of Chinese one-child policy, only-children have reached a point where they need to face the challenge of parental end-of-life care. However, current studies are limited to the whole process of parental aging and lacks attention to the difficulties and challenges that arise in end-of-life care. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore experiences and supportive needs of adult only-children confronting their parental end-of-life care. METHODS: This study was conducted in four medical institutions in Beijing, China. Sixteen participants were recruited through

Exploring family caregivers' experiences of caring for stroke survivors: A systematic review and meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability globally, and many survivors rely on family for ongoing home-based care. Although existing systematic reviews have examined caregiver experiences, they typically encompass mixed populations or designs, indicating a need for a dedicated qualitative synthesis of family caregivers' lived experiences in this setting. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize qualitative evidence on the experiences of family caregivers of stroke survivors, with particular attention to the challenges they face and their support needs. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020, fou

The increasingly blurred line between induction, consolidation and maintenance in acute myeloid leukaemia.

Since the early 1970s, the treatment of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) has undergone a major transformation. Initially based on only two drugs, an anthracycline and cytosine arabinoside, the aim of therapy was to achieve a haematological response allowing patients to recover and go home. Back in those early days, cure was not a realistic expectation. Treatment was analogous to a heart attack; upon recovery and a short respite, recurrence and death inevitably followed. Over the subsequent decades, slow but remarkable progress was made such that a subgroup of young adults could become long-term s

An evaluation of a palliative care outreach programme for children with Burkitt lymphoma in rural Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care (PC) is the most appropriate treatment for patients with life-limiting, incurable diseases, but it is a relatively new concept in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). A lack of curative treatment options for some conditions creates a great need for PC, but such services are rarely provided in SSA. More research into PC in SSA is urgently needed to create an evidence base to confirm the importance of appropriate PC services. OBJECTIVES: To gain a better understanding of the needs of patients and their families visited by a children's PC nurse in Cameroon and to identify aspect
