Analysis of Korean Retinal Specialists' Opinions on Implanting Diffractive Multifocal Intraocular Lenses in Eyes with Underlying Retinal Diseases.

Multifocal intraocular lenses (MF-IOLs) are increasingly implanted as the need for good near- and intermediate-distance vision increases. Although retinal disease is known to be a relative contraindication for MF-IOL implantation, there are no detailed guidelines for MF-IOL implantation with respect to the type and severity of retinal diseases/statuses. In this study, because retinal diseases can affect the performance of MF-IOLs, we analyzed the opinions of 111 retinal specialists, who were members of the Korean Retina Society, on the implantation of diffractive MF-IOLs in eyes with 15 retina

Plasmalogens in the retina: from occurrence in retinal cell membranes to potential involvement in pathophysiology of retinal diseases.

Plasmalogens (Pls) represent a specific subclass of glycerophospholipids characterized by the presence of a vinyl-ether bond at the sn-1 position of glycerol. Pls are quantitatively important in membranes of neuronal tissues, including the brain and the retina, where they can represent until almost two-third of ethanolamine glycerophospholipids. They are considered as reservoirs of polyunsaturated fatty acids as several studies have shown that arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids are preferentially esterified on Pls when compared to other glycerophospholipids. Reduced levels of Pls were obser

Amino acid metabolism in retinal diseases: Mechanisms, diagnostics, and therapeutic opportunities.

Amino acid metabolism serves as a central hub linking retinal energy supply, neurotransmission, and cell signaling, which is critical for maintaining retinal structure and function. This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms by which abnormal amino acid metabolism contributes to retinal diseases. The major mechanisms include: 1) excitotoxicity caused by disruption of glutamate-glutamine cycle; 2) mitochondrial oxidative stress and epigenetic changes due to accumulation of branched-chain and sulfur-containing amino acids; 3) remodeling of immune microenvironment due to altered tryptophan a

Monogenic Retinal Diseases Associated With Genes Encoding Phototransduction Proteins: A Review.

Phototransduction, the process by which captured photons elicit electrical changes in retinal rod and cone cells, represents the first neuronal step in vision and involves interactions between several highly specialised proteins. Pathogenic variants in genes encoding many of these proteins can give rise to significant vision impairment, accounting for a substantial portion of inherited retinal disease. Such genes include RHO, OPN1LW, OPN1MW, GNAT1, GNAT2, GNB3, PDE6A, PDE6B, PDE6G, PDE6C, PDE6H, CNGA1, CNGB1, CNGA3, CNGB3, GRK1, SAG, ARR3, RGS9, RGS9BP, GUCY2D, GUCA1A and SLC24A1. Many of thes

Retromode imaging in retinal diseases: A systematic review of the literature.

Retromode scanning laser ophthalmoscopy imaging captures a pseudo-3-dimensional image of the ocular fundus. Retromode scanning laser ophthalmoscopy imaging was introduced first in 2008 using the Nidek F-10 scanning laser ophthalmoscope (F-10; Nidek Co., Gamagori, Japan). At that time, no major role was described for this imaging modality. The interest in retromode scanning laser ophthalmoscopy imaging is reemerging with the recent advent of the Mirante that combines scanning laser ophthalmoscopy and optical coherence tomography (Nidek Co., Gamagori, Japan) that can capture retromode images of

Pearls and Pitfalls of Adaptive Optics Ophthalmoscopy in Inherited Retinal Diseases.

Adaptive optics (AO) retinal imaging enables individual photoreceptors to be visualized in the clinical setting. AO imaging can be a powerful clinical tool for detecting photoreceptor degeneration at a cellular level that might be overlooked through conventional structural assessments, such as spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Therefore, AO imaging has gained significant interest in the study of photoreceptor degeneration, one of the most common causes of inherited blindness. Growing evidence supports that AO imaging may be useful for diagnosing early-stage retinal dystrop

Sustained treatment of retinal vascular diseases with self-aggregating sunitinib microparticles.

Neovascular age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy are prevalent causes of vision loss requiring frequent intravitreous injections of VEGF-neutralizing proteins, and under-treatment is common and problematic. Here we report incorporation of sunitinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that blocks VEGF receptors, into a non-inflammatory biodegradable polymer to generate sunitinib microparticles specially formulated to self-aggregate into a depot. A single intravitreous injection of sunitinib microparticles potently suppresses choroidal neovascularization in mice for six months and
