Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that can cause visual impairment and affects the elderly over 50 years of age. AMD is characterized by the presence of drusen, which causes changes in the physiological structure of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the boundaries of the Bruch's membrane layer (BM). Optical coherence tomography is one of the main exams for the detection and monitoring of AMD, which seeks changes through the evaluation of successive sectional cuts in the search for morphological changes caused by drusen. The use of CAD (Computer-Aided Detection) sy

Reticular pseudodrusen (RPD) are subretinal deposits that, when observed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), form a distinct phenotype, often associated with late-stage disease. To date, RPD genetic risk associations overlap six well-established AMD-risk regions. Determining RPD-specific underlying genetic causes by using adequate imaging methods should improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of RPD.

INTRODUCTION: Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) is a leading cause of vision impairment globally and the second most common retinal vascular disease leading to blindness. Affecting over 20 million people worldwide, the prevalence of BRVO is expected to increase with the aging population. Branch retinal vein occlusion occurs due to the obstruction of small veins draining blood from the retina, leading to hemorrhages, fluid leakage and retinal damage. Its pathogenesis involves a complex interplay of ocular conditions and genetic predispositions.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was

UNLABELLED: The aim of this systematic literature review is twofold, (1) detail the impact of retinal biomarkers identifiable via optical coherence tomography (OCT) on disease progression and response to treatment in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and (2) establish which biomarkers are currently identifiable by artificial intelligence (AI) models and the utilisation of this technology. Following the PRISMA guidelines, PubMed was searched for peer-reviewed publications dated between January 2016 and January 2022.
POPULATION: Patients diagnosed with nAMD with OCT imaging.

Autopsy and clinical studies were performed in a family with dominantly inherited retinitis pigmentosa. The eyes of two senior members of the family were obtained for histopathologic study, while three other family members were studied clinically. All family members studied had visual field loss, nyctalopia, and a spectrum of pigmentary disruption. There was variable expressivity of pigmentary migration, foveal atrophic changes, surface wrinkling retinopathy, choriocapillaris atrophy, drusen, vitreous synchysis, and optic pallor. Three specific zones of retinal and retinal pigment epithelial c

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of image-assisted fundus examination to detect retinal lesions compared with traditional fundus examination.
METHODS: Subjects were imaged using a nonmydriatic ultrawide field scanning laser ophthalmoscope. After imaging, subjects underwent both a traditional and an image-assisted fundus examination, in random order. During the image-assisted method, ultrawide field scanning laser ophthalmoscopic images were reviewed in conjunction with a dilated fundus examination. Lesions detected by each method were assigned to one of three

BACKGROUND: Tamoxifen retinopathy is known to be an adverse effect of high-dose tamoxifen treatment. Evidence of ocular toxicity at lower doses is less convincing: the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of the above-mentioned retinopathy in a population treated with low-dose tamoxifen.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty-nine women treated with low-dose tamoxifen (20 mg/day) were examined. Visual acuity measurement, slit-lamp biomicroscopy and fundus examination were performed. Patients were reexamined after 6-12 months.
RESULTS: Refractile retinal opacities, similar to those previou

We have described a complex abnormality of retinal pigment epithelium, Bruch's membrane, and choriocapillaris in mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis (MCGN) type II. Patients with MCGN type II were examined by vitreous fluorophotometry which reveals that there is a breakdown of the blood retinal barrier (BRB) in those patients with the typical fundus lesions. The function of this barrier was calculated as a penetration ratio and was statistically greater in these patients when compared with a group of (a) normal persons, (b) patients with drusen, and (c) patients with other forms of glomerulon

Background and Objectives: Retromode is a relatively new retinal-imaging technique that is based on the transillumination principle and is obtained with a scanning laser ophthalmoscope that uses light in the infrared spectrum. The laser light penetrates into the deep retinal layers and the choroid. Retromode images are captured with a laterally displaced aperture, and the detector captures only the scattered light. The result is a high-contrast pseudo-three-dimensional image. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disabling retinal disease. AMD is characterized in its early stage by small

BACKGROUND: Drusen-like lesions beneath the retina in patients with partial lipodystrophy and type II mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis (MCGN) were first reported in 1989. This study reports the long-term follow-up of this original cohort of patients more than 10 years later.
METHODS: Three patients had undergone renal transplantation. Retinopathy was graded semiquantitatively using an international classification and grading system. Progression was assessed by comparing the visual acuities and the colour, red-free and fluorescein angiographic photographs at baseline and review.
RESULTS:

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye disease and the most common cause of blindness among the elderly. AMD is characterized by early atrophy of the choriocapillaris and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Although AMD is a multifactorial disease with many environmental and genetic risk factors, a hallmark of the disease is the origination of extracellular deposits, or drusen, between the RPE and Bruch membrane. Human retinal G-protein-coupled receptor (RGR) gene generates an exon-skipping splice variant of RGR-opsin (RGR-d; NP_001012740) that is a persistent component of s

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the developed world. Since advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are implicated in the pathogenesis of AMD through various lines of evidence, we investigated the potential of fructosamine-3-kinase (FN3K) in the disruption of retinal AGEs, drusenoid material and drusenoid lesions in patients with AMD. AGE-type autofluorescence was measured to evaluate the effects of FN3K on glycolaldehyde-induced AGE-modified neural porcine retinas and unmodified human neural retinas. Eye pairs from cigarette-smoke- and air-exposed mice were
