X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (RS) is a recessively inherited disorder causing progressive vitreoretinal degeneration in males. The gene defective in retinoschisis, XLRS1, has recently been identified and characterised. This gene consists of six exons encoding a protein with a putative role in cell-cell adhesion and phospholipid binding. Juvenile retinoschisis has been actively studied in Finland over the past 30 years, with over 300 diagnosed RS patients. Based on genealogical studies, approximately 70% of the Finnish RS patients originate from Western Finland and 20% from Northern Finland.

INTRODUCTION: In X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS), the RS1 pathogenic variant and the patient's age might be the most important determinants of the XLRS phenotype. In this case report, we present fraternal twins with the same RS1 pathogenic mutation who were examined at the same age yet exhibited significantly different phenotypes.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case report. Both patients underwent best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) testing, slit-lamp examination, wide-field fundus imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and genetic testing on the same day.
RESULTS: Fraternal twins, age

Retinal detachment (RD) and retinoschisis (RS) are the main complications leading to vision loss in high myopia. Accurate segmentation of RD and RS, including its subcategories (outer, middle, and inner retinoschisis) in optical coherence tomography images is of great clinical significance in the diagnosis and management of high myopia. For this multi-class segmentation task, we propose a novel framework named complementary multi-class segmentation networks. Based on domain knowledge, a three-class segmentation path (TSP) and a five-class segmentation path (FSP) are designed, and their outputs

X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is an inherited retinal disorder due to mutations in retinoschisin 1, characterized by impaired central vision secondary to parafoveal cystic cavities and visual field loss by splitting through the retinal nerve fibre layer in the peripheral retina. It is the leading cause of juvenile macular degeneration in males, and currently there is no approved treatment but carbonic anhydrase inhibitors can be used. A retrospective review of the medical records of 17 children with confirmed XLRS seen in the Paediatric Ophthalmology Department of La Paz University Hospital fr

Aland island eye disease (AIED), an incomplete form of X-linked congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB2A), and X-linked cone-rod dystrophy type 3 (CORDX3) display many overlapping clinical findings. They result from mutations in the CACNA1F gene encoding the α1F subunit of the Cav1.4 channel, which plays a key role in neurotransmission from rod and cone photoreceptors to bipolar cells. Case report: A 57-year-old Caucasian man who had suffered since his early childhood from nystagmus, nyctalopia, low visual acuity and high myopia in both eyes (OU) presented to expand the diagnostic process

BACKGROUND: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is a rare inherited bilateral retinal degeneration caused by mutations in RS1 gene, occurring exclusively in men. Various ocular complications associated with XLRS are reported, and angle closure glaucoma in these eyes is one such complication that is refractory and needs surgery for intraocular pressure control. Glaucoma surgery in these eyes often results in refractory malignant glaucoma with its serious sequelae. Several surgical modifications to prevent this complication have been tried with no or limited success.

X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) has been associated with retinal vascular abnormalities, but retinal vasoproliferative tumor (RVPT) has been rarely reported in this context. We describe the case of a 12-month-old boy presenting with esotropia of his left eye due to extensive exudation secondary to RVPT. Right eye examination revealed macular and bullous peripheral retinoschisis. Combining laser photocoagulation and intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor allowed control of the exudative process at 12 months follow-up. RVPT could be the first sign of XLRS.
