Unfavourable sedentary and physical activity behaviour before and after retirement: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: During transition to retirement there is often a rearrangement of daily life which might provide a key opportunity for interventions to promote a non-sedentary and active lifestyle. To be able to design effective interventions, it is essential to know which sedentary and physical behaviour domains (eg, at home or during leisure time) have potential to facilitate healthy ageing during the retirement transition. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether unfavourable sedentary and physical activity behaviour before retirement predict unfavourable sedentary and physical activity behaviour after

Epidemiologic Aspects of Medical Retirement from the Republic of Korea Army due to Visual Impairment.

This study was done to report the epidemiologic characteristics of medical retirement from the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army due to visual impairment and to suggest a practical screening system for the draft. The medical records of 423 eyes of 301 patients who retired from the ROK Army due to visual impairment were reviewed retrospectively between January 2010 and December 2014. The patients were grouped by the presence of trauma, and each group was subdivided by military rank. We analyzed demographic and ophthalmic data, including the etiology of ophthalmologic disease. The etiology was classi

Influence of electronic medical record implementation on provider retirement at a major academic medical centre.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The push for electronic medical record (EMR) implementation is grounded on increasing efficiency and cost savings. Our objective was to investigate the effect of EMR implementation on provider attrition. METHODS: We completed a retrospective study investigating whether medical provider attrition, clinical MD or equivalent, coincided with EMR implementation. We analysed monthly provider attrition rates and mean age at attrition 24 months preceding the EMR 'go-live' date at our institution and 12 months after. RESULTS: 208 provider departures occurred between Ju

Physical Activity Is Associated With Decreased Epigenetic Aging: Findings From the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Epigenetic aging measures or clocks are DNA methylation-based indicators of biological aging, linked to health outcomes and disease risk. Physical activity and exercise may influence epigenetic aging, suggesting a pathway through which it promotes healthier aging and reduces chronic disease burden. In this study, we assessed the association between self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) in participants of the Health and Retirement Study, followed biennially for 12 years from 2004 to 2016. METHODS: Leukocyte DNA methylation was me

Social relationships and epigenetic aging in older adulthood: Results from the Health and Retirement Study.

Growing evidence suggests that social relationship quality can influence age-related health outcomes, although how the quality of one's relationships directly relates to the underlying aging process is less clear. We hypothesized that the absence of close relationships as well as lower support and higher strain within existing relationships would be associated with an accelerated epigenetic aging profile among older adults in the Health and Retirement Study. Adults (N = 3,647) aged 50-100 years completed ratings of support and strain in relationships with their spouse, children, other family m

Trajectories of low back pain from midlife to retirement and functional ability at old age.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify trajectories of low back pain (LBP) over a 16-year follow-up from midlife to retirement and investigate their association with mobility limitations and disability in activities of daily living (ADL-disability) in later life. METHODS: The study population consisted of 6257 baseline (1981) respondents aged 44-58 years from Finnish Longitudinal study on Aging Municipal Employees. Repeated measurements of LBP were collected in 1985, 1992 and 1997. We studied persons who had data on LBP at baseline and in at least one of the follow-ups and had information o

Drinking behavior among older adults in a planned retirement community: results from The Villages survey.

OBJECTIVES: Research indicates increasing trends among older adults toward heavy and abusive drinking, often associated with depressive symptoms. Possible exceptions are residents of planned retirement communities, whose drinking may be associated with social activities. To better understand these relationships, this study examined the relationship of depressive symptoms and drinking in a large retirement community. METHODS: The Villages, a retirement community in central Florida with a focus on healthy, active living, has almost 90,000 residents. In 2012, a population-based needs assessment

Depressive symptoms and early retirement intentions among Danish eldercare workers: Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.

BACKGROUND: Depression increases the risk of disability pension and represents a health related strain that pushes people out of the labour market. Although early voluntary retirement is an important alternative to disability pension, few studies have examined whether depressive symptoms incur early voluntary retirement. This study examined whether depressive symptoms and changes in depressive symptoms over time were associated with early retirement intentions. METHODS: We used a cross-sectional (n = 4041) and a prospective (n = 2444) population from a longitudinal study on employees of the D

Does Neighborhood Disorder Predict Recovery From Mobility Limitation? Findings From the Health and Retirement Study.

OBJECTIVE: This research explores whether perceptions of physical neighborhood disorder predict recovery from mobility limitation over a 2-year period and examines whether psychosocial factors (i.e., depressive symptomology and mastery) and physical activity are salient mediators. METHOD: Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS): Participant Lifestyle Questionnaire (2008-2010), odds ratio estimates of recovery were ascertained using binary logistic regression, and post hoc Sobel tests were conducted to formally assess mediation. RESULTS: Net of demographic characteristics and so

Restless legs syndrome and functional limitations among American elders in the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common condition associated with decreased quality of life in older adults. This study estimates the prevalence, risk factors, and functional correlates of among U.S. elders. METHODS: Subjects (n = 1,008) were sub-sampled from the 2002 cross-sectional interview survey of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a nationally representative study of U.S. elders. Symptoms and sleep disturbances consistent with RLS were identified. Activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and limitations for mobility, large muscl

[Locomotor and cardiorespiratory impairments after retirement in relation to certain occupational exposures during working life].

The relationships between locomotor and cardiorespiratory impairments and occupational exposures during working life were examined, using a sample of 627 retired persons in the greater Paris area. Among men, there was a significant statistical association between carrying heavy weights and locomotor impairment. There were also significant associations between exposure to toxic products, tiring postures and vibrations and cardiorespiratory impairment among men. Concerning women, associations between exposure to dust and tiring postures during working life and cardiorespiratory impairment were o

Self-perceptions of aging and advance care planning: Longitudinal evidence from the Health and Retirement Study.

OBJECTIVES: Advance care planning (ACP) is increasingly conceptualized as a proactive, communication-centered process that supports person-centered care in later life. Although prior research has focused on demographic and clinical predictors, less is known about the psychological factors that shape how individuals engage in planning. Guided by Stereotype Embodiment Theory, this study examined whether self-perceptions of aging (SPA) prospectively predict patterns of ACP engagement. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Health and Retirement Study (2008-2014). A lagged longitudinal design linked b

Widowhood, immune aging, and mortality in older Americans: evidence from the US Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Widowhood has been linked to increased mortality risk, particularly among men, but the biological mechanisms remain unknown. Given the impacts of stress on immune function, we hypothesized that widowhood leads to increased mortality by impacting immunity. METHODS: Data from 8410 US adults aged 56 and older in the Health and Retirement Study, including flow cytometry of blood samples, survey data, and mortality, were analyzed. Associations between widowhood, immunosenescence (measured by the CD8+:CD4+ Ratio, EMRA CD4+:Naïve CD4+ Ratio, EMRA CD8+:Naïve CD8+ Ratio), and mortality wer

Emotional Well-Being Trajectories Before and After Statutory Retirement-Contributions of Social and Health-Related Factors.

Aging population in OECD countries and the rising mental disorder burden highlight the need to understand statutory retirement's contribution to emotional well-being. However, the relationship between statutory retirement and emotional well-being remains underexplored. Clarifying this relationship can help policymakers enhance pension systems to better support statutory retirees' well-being. This study examined emotional well-being trajectories 15 years before and after statutory retirement among 5076 City of Helsinki employees in Finland (81% women; age range 40-60 at Phase 1), and the social

The impact of delayed retirement on the financial sustainability of China's urban employee pension insurance fund.

Against the backdrop of accelerating population aging and mounting concerns over the financial viability of public pension systems, this paper develops an actuarial simulation framework that integrates demographic dynamics, fund revenue and expenditure rules, and the central adjustment mechanism. We evaluate four scenarios: baseline, delayed retirement only, national pooling only, and the combined reform. Our findings indicate that in the absence of policy intervention, regional disparities in fund balances intensify markedly: the western region enters cumulative deficit first, followed by the

Prior incarceration and food insecurity trajectories through older adulthood: findings from the Health and Retirement Study.

INTRODUCTION: Prior cross-sectional research has identified incarceration as a risk factor for food insecurity across the life course. However, there is a lack of longitudinal studies on the relationship between prior incarceration and food insecurity over time. METHODS: This study uses biennial data across 10 time points from the Health and Retirement Study (years 2012-2022) to examine the association between prior incarceration and longitudinal trajectories of food insecurity among adults aged 55 and older in the USA (N=8229). Group-based trajectory modelling was used to assess patterns of

Association of frailty index with incidence of chronic kidney disease: China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.

AIM: Frailty is an important risk factor for a wide range of chronic diseases and for mortality risk. This study aims to explore the relationship between frailty and incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly on the change and accumulation of frailty. METHODS: Frailty status was assessed using the frailty index (FI, constructed by 31 items) and categorized as robust, pre-frail, and frail. The accumulation and change in frailty were assessed on the basis of frailty status at baseline and a second survey 4 years after baseline. Logistic regression was used to estimate the associati

Changes in physical activity across retirement: a compositional data analysis approach in a Swedish cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Retirement is a major life transition that can alter patterns of movement behaviors (physical activity, sedentary behavior and sleep). While some studies indicate an increase in physical activity post-retirement, others report a rise in sedentary behavior. However, evidence is lacking on how individuals re-allocate time among movement behaviors, particularly using analytical approaches that account for the co-dependence of 24-hour time-use data. Furthermore, little is known about how pre-retirement occupational physical activity (OPA) levels influence physical activity after retire
