UNLABELLED: Teratomas are neoplasms that arise from pluripotent cells and can differentiate along one or more embryonic germ lines. Renal teratoma is an exceedingly rare condition. Teratomas commonly arise in the gonads, sacrococcygeal region, pineal gland, and retroperitoneum. They present mainly as an abdominal mass with few other symptoms. Majority of the tumors are benign, situated on the left side and para renal, occasional lesions are bilateral. If diagnosed early, they are amenable to curative excision.Renal teratomas are rare and most have been dismissed as cases of teratoid nephroblas

We describe the case of a 31-week fetus who died in utero with an invasive retroperitoneal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma. This rare vascular neoplasm usually presents as a localized violaceous skin lesion in infants and behaves in a benign fashion; however, kaposiform hemangioendothelioma may present as an invasive neoplasm of the chest or abdominal cavity, where it can lead to the Kasabach-Merritt syndrome, which consists of thrombocytopenia, consumptive coagulopathy, and microangiopathic anemia in association with a vascular anomaly. The case we describe is unique in that the tumor present

Adrenal myelolipoma (AML) is a rare, benign neoplasm of the adrenal gland, typically asymptomatic and non-functioning. It is often detected incidentally during health checkups using B-ultrasound or computed tomography scans. Bilateral giant AMLs treated with combined abdominal and retroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy are rare. The present study reports on a 60-year-old male incidentally diagnosed with bilateral giant adrenal masses measuring 100x87x63 mm on the right and 75x52x33 mm on the left. The tumors were successfully excised using transperitoneal and retroperitoneal laparoscopic a

Composite lymphoma refers to the co-occurrence of two or more morphologically and immunophenotypically separate lymphomas in the same topographic site at the time of clinical presentation. It is an infrequent type of lymphoid neoplasm, present in lymphoid tissue and may be due to the existence of two genetically related neoplasms such as transformation of a single lymphoma into another more aggressive lymphoma or be due to the presence of two clonally unrelated lymphomas. This paper is presenting a case of diffuse non-Hodgkin large B-cell lymphoma with areas of low grade and high grade follicu

Hemangiopericytoma is a rare and solitary solid tumor originating from pericytes, which are contractile pericapillary cells, first identified and described by Zimmermann in 1923. This neoplasm occurs most commonly in the lower extremities and retroperitoneum. The Authors describe the case of a patient affected with a giant retroperitoneal hemangiopericytoma. Echographic and computed tomographic scans have been fundamental in defining location and size of the neoplasm as well as its relations to the surrounding structures. However a definitive diagnosis was possible only by histologic examinati

Extra-adrenal functional neuroendocrine neoplasms are termed paragangliomas. We describe a case of a large abdominal neuroendocrine tumor that was proved to be a paraganglioma on biopsy. Unfortunately, the patient presented with high output heart failure, an extremely rare complication of paraganglioma. Prior to surgical biopsy, the patient underwent a complete invasive and non-invasive cardiac workup, in addition to biochemical testing. On a PET CT, the retroperitoneal neuroendocrine tumor was shown to have been metastasized to the spine. Chemotherapy targeted at somatostatin analogs was init

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are unusual mesenchymal neoplasms composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinct perivascular epithelioid cells (PECs). Although PEComas have the potential to behave in a malignant fashion, malignant PEComas arising from the retroperitoneum are extremely rare. A 68-year-old woman presented with a painful palpable mass in her left upper abdomen. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed a 9 cm sized heterogeneous mass in left para-aortic space and multiple hypervascular nodules in the liver. (18)F-fludeoxyglucose-PET/CT showed multif

BACKGROUND: Castleman's disease is a rare lymphoproliferative syndrome. Its etiology and pathogenesis are unclear. The disease can be occasionally associated with a paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP), an autoimmune mucocutaneous disorder commonly seen in neoplasms of lymphocytic origin.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 63-year old male patient who was referred for surgical treatment of a lately diagnosed retroperitoneal pelvic mass. The patient had been already treated for two years due to progressive diffuse cutaneous lesions histologically consistent with lichen ruber verucosus and pem

A total of 12 patients with malignant localized renal or ureteral neoplasms underwent multi-slice computed tomography. Imaging data were sent to the dedicated workstation to create volume rendering and virtual laparoscopic images of the kidney which was displaced ventrally with retroperitoneal balloon. These findings were compared with video images obtained during retroperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy. The kidney displacement simulator depicted all renal arteries (100% sensitivity) and 13 of 14 renal veins (93% sensitivity). Hilar anatomy, including the tumor, major vessels and their relati

Benign schwannoma is a tumor arising from Schwann cells (forming the neural sheath of peripheral nerves). The retroperitoneal location is unusual (0.5-5% of cases). Most common locations are cranial nerves (especially the 8th pair) and, in peripheral nerve system the neck, mediastinum and extremities. To this date the known cases of benign retroperitoneal schwannoma are about 60, of which less than 20 in the pelvis. The low frequency of this tumor and the lack of specific instrumental signs and objective symptoms (since it develops in a deep and broad region as retroperitoneum) make presurgica

INTRODUCTION: Plasma cell neoplasms (PCNs) are a rare type of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD). Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare type of PCN, and is infrequently located in the retroperitoneum. According to the current literature, heart transplant recipients are considered at intermediate risk for developing PTLD.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 70-year-old patient with a history of heart transplantation, who was admitted to the hospital with back pain and swelling of the left lower limb. Imaging revealed a large retroperitoneal mass involving the left kidney,

Germ cell tumours (GCT) are the most common testicular neoplasms, seen mainly in young adults. Rarely they can affect extragonadal tissues, either as primary tumours or as metastases, most commonly to retroperitoneal lymph nodes. A 'burned-out' testicular tumour is a metastatic GCT with a relatively occult primary testicular tumour, which has histologically spontaneously regressed. We report a case of a 26-year-old man who presented with an acute history of lower back pain and leg swelling. CT demonstrated a large retroperitoneal soft tissue mass causing right-sided hydronephrosis with inferio

Myelolipoma most commonly arises in the adrenal gland. Extra-adrenal myelolipomas are rare; to our knowledge, approximately 37 previous cases have been reported. We report a myelolipoma presenting as a localized mass in perirenal adipose tissue juxtaposed to the renal hilum in a 65-year-old Caucasian man who presented with back pain, weight loss, hematuria, and flank pain. The most likely diagnostic considerations were pyelonephritis or primary renal malignancy. However, histology revealed mainly mature adipose tissue along with multiple scattered islands of hematopoietic precursor cells. Repr

Well-differentiated lipomatous tumors constitute a histopathologic category whose nomenclature has been controversial, particularly with respect to the distinction between atypical lipomas of the extremities and well-differentiated liposarcomas of the retroperitoneum. To determine whether there were differences in image analytic parameters between these neoplasms, 72 lesions including 21 typical lipomas, 7 atypical lipomas, 16 retroperitoneal and 5 nonretroperitoneal well-differentiated, 9 dedifferentiated, and 14 pleomorphic liposarcomas were submitted to the computer-assisted microscopic ana

RATIONALE: Lipomatous tumors are rare in the pediatric population. Lipomatous tumors may develop at any location throughout the body; however, they are highly uncommon in the retroperitoneal area. Lipomatous tumors represent the predominant category of soft-tissue neoplasms. Only 3 cases of pediatric retroperitoneal lipoma have been reported since 1980. We report a benign retroperitoneal lipomatous tumor and the literature compilation of benign retroperitoneal lesions.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 2-year-old South Asian female presenting with 13 months of increasing abdominal distention and intermitte

Mathematical algorithms 3D-reconstruction techniques and artificial intelligence are a current line of innovation in colorectal surgical oncology. The objective of this study is to show the initial experience of a 3D image processing and reconstruction system to perform complete mesocolic excision and D3-lymphadenectomy in colon cancer. It is applied to a splenic flexure neoplasm and in a right colon cancer with suspected retroperitoneal infiltration. 3D image processing and reconstruction was employed to delimit 10 cm proximal and distal intestinal margins to the tumor and define its correspo

Almost all neoplasms of the pancreas are derived from pancreatic epithelial components, including the most common pancreatic mass, primary pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Nonepithelial neoplasms comprise only 1%-2% of all pancreatic neoplasms. Although some may arise directly from intrapancreatic elements, many originate from mesenchymal, hematopoietic, or neural elements in the retroperitoneal peripancreatic space and grow into the pancreas. Once these tumors reach a certain size, it can be challenging to identify their origin. Because these manifest at imaging as intrapancreatic mas

UNLABELLED: Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a primary tumor with mesenchymal vascular origin that represents 1% of all vascular neoplasm. HPC develops from the Zimmerman's pericytes around capillaries venules and it is possible to observe it frequently in the extremities, pelvis, retroperitoneum, head, neck and meninges. The only definitive parameter of malignancy is the development of recurrence or distant metastases. This report describes a case of symptomatic retroperitoneal HPC in a young female patient treated by surgical complete removal of the mass, and literature review. Despite the relati

In this report, we describe a case of hitherto unreported primary retroperitoneal acinar cell cystadenoma that morphologically and immunophenotypically resembled pancreatic acinar cell cystadenoma. Pancreatic acinar cell cystadenoma is a very uncommon benign lesion characterized by acinar cell differentiation, the evidence of pancreatic exocrine enzyme production, and the absence of cellular atypia. Our case occurred in a 55-year-old woman presenting a 10-cm multilocular cystic lesion in the retroperitoneum thought to be a mucinous cystic neoplasm. At laparotomy, the cystic mass, which showed
