Return to sports activity by athletes after treatment of spondylolysis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

AIM: To clarify the efficacy of conservative and surgical treatment of spondylolysis in athletes. METHODS: PubMed was used to perform a search of the literature for studies published during the period from 1990 to 2009 that reported data on the outcome of conservative or surgical treatment of spondylolysis in athletes. The articles were examined for data on the percentage of athletes who returned to sports activities and the interval between the start of treatment and their return. RESULTS: Five studies were identified. Two studies were concerned with conservative treatment and the other thr

Return to sports following operatively treated ankle fractures.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated which variables influence patients' return to sports after operative fixation of an unstable ankle fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over a 5-year period, 488 patients underwent surgical repair of an unstable ankle fracture. 243 patients preoperatively identified themselves as participating in vigorous activity. Clinical evaluation, functional outcome scores, and radiographic findings were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: At 3 months postoperatively, only 3% of all patients had returned to full sports. At 6 months, 14% of patients had returned, while at o

Spondylolysis: returning the athlete to sports participation with brace treatment.

Between 1988 and 1995, 73 adolescent athletes treated with the Boston Overlap Brace for spondylolysis were reviewed to evaluate improvement in pain score and activity level. A favorable clinical outcome was achieved in 80%. Girls and boys who participated in high-risk sports were five times more likely to have an unfavorable clinical outcome than those who participated in low-risk sports (odds ratio = 5, 95% confidence interval = 2.4-7.5, P = .003). In addition, acute onset of pain and hamstring tightness were associated with a worse outcome. Athletes with symptomatic spondylolysis treated wit

Active Rehabilitation and Return to Play in Sports-Related Concussion.

Sport-related concussion affects approximately 1.6 to 3.8 million athletes annually in the United States. Management has evolved from historical practices of strict cognitive and physical rest to evidence-based approaches emphasizing early, individualized, active rehabilitation. Most adults recover within approximately 14 days, while children and adolescents may require up to 4 weeks, with initial symptom burden representing the strongest predictor of recovery duration. Early, progressive aerobic activity initiated within 24 to 72 hours postinjury accelerates recovery compared to prolonged res

Return to Sports After Cervical Total Disc Replacement.

OBJECTIVE: Total disc replacement (TDR) is typically indicated in young patients with a cervical soft disc herniation. There are few data on the activity level of patients after cervical TDR, in particular from young patients who are expected to have a high activity level with frequent exercising. The expectation is that returning to active sports after cervical TDR is not restricted. METHODS: Fifty patients were treated with a monosegmental cervical TDR at our department between May 2006 and March 2012. Clinical status and radiographic parameters were evaluated preoperatively and during foll

Return to Sports Following Sports-Related Concussion in Collision Sports: An Expert Consensus Statement Using the Modified Delphi Technique.

PURPOSE: To perform a Delphi consensus for return to sports (RTS) following sports-related concussion (SRC). METHODS: Open-ended questions in rounds 1 and 2 were answered. The results of the first 2 rounds were used to develop a Likert-style questionnaire for round 3. If agreement at round 3 was ≤80% for an item, if panel members were outside consensus or there were >30% neither agree/disagree responses, the results were carried forward into round 4. The level of agreement and consensus was defined as 90%. RESULTS: Individualized graduated RTS protocols should be used. A normal clinical, ocu

Decision to Return to Sport Participation After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Part II: Self-Reported and Functional Performance Outcomes.

CONTEXT: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) is the most commonly used method for helping athletes regain function and return to preinjury activity levels after ACL injury. Outcomes after ACLR have suggested that athletes return to a level of function that would support a return to sport participation; however, in a recent meta-analysis, pooled return rates were only 55%. It is unclear whether this discrepancy is a result of functional impairments. OBJECTIVE: To compare patient-reported outcomes (PROs), dynamic balance, dynamic functional performance, strength, and muscular

Clinical Management of Patellar Tendinopathy in Athletes: A Narrative Review of Diagnosis, Treatment, and Return to Sport.

Patellar tendinopathy affects approximately 18% of athletes and up to 45% of volleyball players, representing a common cause of load-related anterior knee pain and functional limitation in jumping and landing sports. Clinical diagnosis relies primarily on history and physical examination. However, no consensus has yet been established on standardized diagnostic criteria, particularly for imaging-based assessment, and no definitive clinical practice guideline currently exists; imaging abnormalities frequently coexist with symptoms but are also common in asymptomatic athletes, and incidental fin

Examining for gender differences in return to learn following sport-related concussion in high school student athletes.

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies have investigated associations between gender, symptom resolution, and time to return to play following sport-related concussion (SRC). However, there is a notable gap in research regarding the association between gender and return to learn (RTL) in adolescents. Therefore, this study 1) compared the patterns of RTL between boys and girls who are high school student athletes, and 2) evaluated the possible association between gender and time to RTL after adjusting for covariates. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of a prospective surveillance program that monitored

Return to Sport and Patient-Reported Outcomes After Subpectoral Biceps Tenodesis for SLAP Tear in Collegiate Gymnasts.

BACKGROUND: The biceps superior labral complex is a known source of shoulder dysfunction in young, high-level athletes. Superior labral anterior-posterior (SLAP) repairs are often unsatisfactory for treating biceps-labral pathology in this demographic group, with high failure rates and poor return to sport (RTS). Minimal data have been published to demonstrate patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and RTS in gymnasts after treatment of SLAP pathologies. HYPOTHESIS: Gymnasts undergoing biceps tenodesis for SLAP pathologies would have satisfactory PROs and satisfactory RTS. STUDY DESIGN: Case serie
