Carpal tunnel syndrome is common at the largest lamb processing plant in the world, especially in new lamb boners. The purpose of this study was to establish the incidence and whether expeditious return to work following open carpal tunnel decompression was possible. Two hundred patients with a neurophysiologically confirmed diagnosis underwent surgery between 2002 and 2006. One hundred and eighty-seven patients were assessed retrospectively and 13 prospectively. The incidence in new lamb boners was 10% in their first season. On average, workers commenced rehabilitation at 11 days post-operati

AIMS: To examine the impact of job strain (that is, high psychological job demands and low job control) on return to work and work role functioning at two months, six months, or both, following carpal tunnel release surgery.
METHODS: A community based cohort of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients from physician practices was recruited between April 1997 and October 1998 throughout Maine (USA). 128 patients at two months and 122 at six months completed all relevant questions. A three level outcome variable indicated whether patients had: (1) returned to work functioning successfully, (2) ret

An Early Return to Work Program was initiated at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Associated Schools of Medicine, Hygiene and Nursing in Baltimore, Maryland, in April 1992 as part of a comprehensive effort to control the incidence and costs of work-related illnesses and injuries. The program was similar to others that incorporate employee and supervisory training and job accommodation, but it also included an industrial hygienist trained in ergonomics to facilitate the placement of individuals with restrictions. The return to work program was studied over a 10-year period, comparing the number o

Reintegration into a social and work environment, as the final objective rehabilitation therapy, is one of the greatest challenges faced in this speciality. The aim of this study was to analyse the reintegration into the workforce of 43 upperlimb amputees in Asturias, Spain (1,100,000 inhabitants) whose amputations were as a result of accidents at work. For this purpose various factors related to their return to work were studied. The most important factor was the year in which the amputation was carried out, since reintegration was more likely to occur in those amputees whose accident at work

INTRODUCTION: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is a commonly used procedure for patients suffering from debilitating unicompartmental knee arthritis. For UKA recipients, robotic-assisted surgery has served as an aid in improving surgical accuracy and precision. While studies exist detailing outcomes of robotic UKA, to our knowledge, there are no studies assessing time to return to work using robotic-assisted UKA. Thus, the purpose of this study was to prospectively assess the time to return to work and to achieve the level of work activity following robotic-assisted UKA to create recom

OBJECTIVE: Sustained return to work after surgery for work-related rotator cuff syndrome (WRRCS) remains quite difficult. The main purpose of the present study was to identify predictive factors of a return-to-work (RTW) trajectory.
METHODS: A total of 96 workers with WRRCS were identified by 4 surgeons. They were followed prospectively before and after the surgery, until 1 year after RTW, or for 20 months after surgery when they did not. Participants completed a series of standardized questionnaires related to working conditions, health, and beliefs, and performed functional tests at the inc

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain what epidemiological variables determine whether a patient with work incapacity as a result of fibromyalgia returns to work.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was carried out that included 412 patients with fibromyalgia under 54 years of age and classified as having a total permanent disability by the National Institute of Social Security in Madrid in 2005. Follow-up from 2005 to 2019. We studied the variables of age, sex, marital status, CFS/MCS, psychiatric diagnosis, type of social security affiliation, occupation (CNO-11) and economic amount of the

As our tertiary-level trauma center is close to an industrial zone and associated international port, industrial injuries are seen more often than is expected in routine practice. The aim of this study was to present the demographic data, treatment options, and changes in work-life of patients with foot and ankle injuries due to a forklift accident, and to determine the factors affecting the clinical outcome. The study was conducted in our university hospital and included patients who presented with a foot and ankle injury resulting from a forklift accident. Data were collected including age,

The variations in return to work outcomes for ill or injured persons experiencing health leaves are complex. However, it is important to comprehend these variations in order to develop evidenced-based practice in work rehabilitation. Currently, a plethora of studies exist in the literature that have attempted to explain the variations in work outcomes. A 20-year review of the literature on work outcomes has revealed several limitations in using this knowledge in occupational therapy. The study of return to work outcomes is, for the most part, atheoretical and the knowledge base is fragmented a

BACKGROUND: Stroke frequently results in reduced work participation or permanent withdrawal from work. In low- and middle-income countries like Mozambique, return to work is influenced by limited rehabilitation services, socioeconomic challenges and workplace factors. Little is known about stroke survivors' experiences of these barriers and enablers in Mozambique.
OBJECTIVES: To explore stroke survivors' perceptions of barriers and enablers influencing return to work in Maputo, Mozambique.
METHOD: A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive study was conducted using semi-structured face-to-face

BACKGROUND: Common mental disorders (CMDs) are significant causes of work disability. Low socioeconomic status (SES) is a known risk factor for CMDs and work disability, one possible reason being poorer treatment adherence. We aimed to study the realization of pharmacological treatment and antidepressant adherence in patients with CMDs 3 years before and 3 years after being granted a disability pension (DP) and the role of SES in this. We also studied whether antidepressant adherence is associated with return to work (RTW) after a temporary DP.
METHODS: Information on all persons granted a DP

PURPOSE: Return to work (RTW) after physical injury may be challenging. This study aims to gain insight into barriers and facilitators in RTW, using a multi-stakeholder perspective from trauma patients with diverse injuries and health care professionals (HCPs).
METHODS: Three focus groups (n = 13) and four interviews were conducted with patients who sustained an extremity injury, spinal injury, or traumatic brain injury. Four focus groups (n = 19) were conducted with HCPs (e.g., occupational physicians, trauma surgeons). Data were transcribed verbatim and thematically analyzed for patients an

OBJECTIVES: To document the work situation, the work ability and the expectation of returning to work among adult patients with systemic autoimmune myopathies (SAMs), and to identify the factors associated with each of these outcomes.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study. The work situation (performing paid work vs out of work) was ascertained via a structured questionnaire. For those who were working, we applied the Work Ability Index (WAI; scale 7-49); and for those who were out of work, we applied the Return-to-Work Self-Efficacy questionnaire (RTW-SE; scale 11-66).
RESULTS: Of the 75 patients

BACKGROUND: The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) in Ontario, Canada, launched a new community-based mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) program of care (POC) in November 2020. The new program included graded exercise therapy and vestibular rehabilitation (where required). The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the new mTBI POC on recovery and return to work among patients who suffered a work-related mTBI.
METHODS: We identified WSIB claims that accessed the previous and new mTBI POC over a 4-year timeframe (October 1, 2017, to September 30, 2019, and July 1, 2021, t

Public safety personnel (PSP) are at risk of developing posttraumatic stress injury (PTSI) due to exposure to traumatic experiences and accidents. Rehabilitation programs are available, but their success varies. We studied: (1) characteristics of PSP undergoing PTSI rehabilitation in comparison to non-PSP workers; and (2) predictive value of various factors for return to work. Methods A population-based cohort study was conducted using data on injured workers undergoing PTSI rehabilitation. Of the 488 workers included, 131 were PSP. Outcome measures were: (1) return to pre-accident work at reh
