PURPOSE: Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is a principal pathogen of domestic animals and an opportunistic pathogen of humans. It is the causative agent of pneumonia and haemorrhagic septicaemia in cattle, sheep and goats, fowl cholera in chickens and progressive atrophic rhinitis in swine. In this study, we investigated the humoral and cellular immune responses and protective immunity conferred by an iron-inactivated vaccine with bacterial DNA (IIV+bDNA) as an adjuvant in mice.
METHODOLOGY: P. multocida was grown in BHI broth, inactivated with formalin and FeCl3 and adjuvanted with alum

Pasteurella multocida is able to cause disease in humans and in a wide range of animal hosts, including fowl cholera in birds, atrophic rhinitis in pigs, and snuffles in rabbits. Together with Mannheimia haemolytica, P. multocida also represents a major bacterial causative agent of bovine respiratory disease (BRD), which is one of the most important causes for economic losses for the cattle backgrounding and feedlot industry. Commercially available vaccines only partially prevent infections caused by P. multocida and M. haemolytica. Thus, this study characterized the immunogenicity of P. multo

Pasteurella multocida, a Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen, has led to a broad range of diseases in mammals and birds, including fowl cholera in poultry, pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis in swine and rabbit, hemorrhagic septicemia in cattle, and bite infections in humans. In order to better interpret the genetic diversity and adaptation evolution of this pathogen, seven genomes of P. multocida strains isolated from fowls, rabbit and pigs were determined by using high-throughput sequencing approach. Together with publicly available P. multocida genomes, evolutionary features were systematical

An exploratory case-control study was carried out in Spain in 2002/2003, involving 62 pig farms of different production systems to assess risk factors that, in association with PCV2 infection, induce postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) expression. To achieve this objective two groups of farms selected according to their PMWS status were compared: "cases" (farms with clinical PMWS, n = 32) and "controls" (farms without clinical PMWS, n = 30). A filled-in questionnaire and 45 blood samples (15 sows, and two groups of 15 pigs of 12 and 20 weeks of age, respectively) were obtained fr

BACKGROUND: Porcine Periweaning Failure to Thrive syndrome (PFTS) is a complex and scarcely investigated syndrome that has been of increasing concern in the swine industry during the last decade. Its aetiology is believed to be multifactorial, and although both infectious and non-infectious factors may be involved, including a possible genetic predisposition, consistent association needs to be elucidated.
MAIN BODY: PFTS is characterised by growth retardation and non-specific clinical symptoms that may include progressive debilitation of weaned pigs that typically emerge within two to three w

Chronic allergic conjunctivitis (CAC) or perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC) is the most frequent form of allergy of the conjunctiva that is encountered in Northern Europe, particularly in city areas. Itching, redness of the mucosa, swelling of the lids and tearing are the main symptoms. Seasonal factors and associated rhinitis are often noted. Symptoms may respond to antiallergic drugs. In contrast, there are generally no specific signs of the disease on slitlamp examination. Most of the time the mucosal aspect (papillary, follicular or atrophic type) is common to other forms of conjuncti

This experiment was designed to determine whether a Bordetella bronchiseptica mutant that does not produce dermonecrotic toxin (DNT) is still capable of predisposing pigs to infection with toxigenic Pasteurella multocida. Three groups of pigs were initially inoculated intranasally with a wild type B. bronchiseptica that produces DNT, an isogenic mutant of B. bronchiseptica that does not produce DNT, or PBS. All pigs were then challenged intranasally with a toxigenic strain of P. multocida 4 days later. P. multocida was recovered infrequently and in low numbers from pigs initially inoculated wi

BACKGROUND: The intracellular bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis is an important pathogen in modern swine production. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a live attenuated L. intracellularis vaccine (Enterisol Ileitis®) on the health and production parameters of weaned and finishing pigs in a commercial Finnish 850-sow farm with diagnosed L. intracellularis infection. The herd was free from enzootic pneumonia, swine dysentery, progressive atrophic rhinitis, sarcoptic mange and salmonellosis. Four weekly groups of approximately 500 piglets were included in the study for a tot

Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative capsulated bacterium responsible for a range of diseases that cause severe morbidity and mortality in livestock animals. The hyaluronic acid (HA) capsule produced by P. multocida serogroup A strains is a critical virulence factor. In this study, we utilized transposon-directed insertion site sequencing (TraDIS) to identify genes essential for in vitro growth of P. multocida and combined TraDIS with discontinuous density gradients (TraDISort) to identify genes required for HA capsule production and regulation in this pathogen. Analysis of mutants with a

Acute rhinosinusitis is a common inflammatory condition characterized by the inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. The use of saline irrigation in the nasal passages is a well-established and effective approach for managing both acute and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), allergic or nonallergic, atrophic rhinitis, facilitating postoperative care following endoscopic sinus surgery as well [4]. Various topical agents can be added to lavage solution. Among this mupirocin has notable anti-staphylococcal properties. To study and compare the efficacy of mupirocin nasal irrigation with saline nasal irr

Sarcoptic mange is one of the common swine diseases worldwide. Although mange-free populations can be established with caesarean derived stock, by herd repopulation programmes or by eliminating mange with ivermectin, mange remains prevalent in many countries. Field and experimental studies indicate that hypersensitive mange is detrimental to performance of growing pigs. Typically, producers tolerate mange infestation in their herds and control measures are often haphazard. This tolerance to mange infestation is attributable to the covert nature of the losses (reduced growth rate and feed effic

The interaction of Bordetella bronchiseptica or Pasteurella multocida with swine nasal epithelial cells was studied in vitro. The mean number of B. bronchiseptica organisms adhered per cell was about three times as high as that of P. multocida (P less than 0.01), and the adherence was specifically inhibited by the homologous antiserum prepared with the whole-cell antigen of each bacterium. The poor affinity of P. multocida to the swine nasal mucosa as compared with that of B. bronchiseptica was also demonstrated in the cultured fragments of the nasal mucosa. When observed with a scanning elect

The study was conducted in order to determine if eradication of swine enzootic pneumoniae (SEP) had succeeded with different variants of partial depopulation during the eradication programme on swine farrowing farms joining a health class, LSO 2000. The farms in the health class need to be free from swine enzootic pneumoniae, swine dysentery, sarcoptic mange and atrophic rhinitis. Twenty-one eradication attempts for M. hyopneumoniae were carried out using different variants based on separating adult animals for 2 weeks from infected young pigs which were not returned to the herd. The infected

The taxonomy of the family Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981 appears to be as complex as that of Enterobacteriaceae. 16S rRNA sequencing indicates that the family should be divided into more than 20 genera. According to phylogenetic investigations, the genus Pasteurella sensu stricto includes three subclusters, two of which represent taxa mainly associated with avian hosts. True species of the genera Actinobacillus and Haemophilus have not been reported from birds. Several new taxa, which have been shown to belong to the family Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981 have been reported from birds. Some of these see

The success of a large-scale eradication programme against sarcoptic mange was evaluated in piglet producing herds belonging to the health class LSO 2000. These farms are monitored to be free from sarcoptic mange, swine enzootic pneumoniae, swine dysentery and progressive atrophic rhinitis. The local veterinarians were instructed to eradicate sarcoptic mange from the herds by 2 ivermectin injections 14 days apart or 3 treatments with phoxim pour-on 6 days apart before the farms were able to join the health class. The study consisted of a questionnaire administered to the farmers, farm visits a
