The motor nuclei and primary projections of the IXth, Xth, XIth and XIIth cranial nerves in the monitor lizard, Varanus exanthematicus.

The motor nuclei and sensory connections of the IXth, Xth, XIth, and XIIth cranial nerves of the reptile Varanus exanthematicus were studied with the methods of anterograde degeneration and anterograde and retrograde axonal transport. The motor nuclei of nerve IX are located ventrally in the rhombencephalon and are constituted medially by the large-celled glossopharyngeal part of the nucleus ambiguus and laterally by the small-celled nucleus salivatorius inferior. The motor nuclei of nerve X consist of the dorsomedially located dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and the laterally located vagal

[Meningoencephalitis caused by listeria monocytogenes].

This case report illustrates the difficulties that can arise when diagnosing a CNS infection. Following an episode of gastroenteritis, our patient developed dizziness, a fever up to 39 °C, photophobia, double vision, multiple cranial nerve deficits, and a resting nystagmus with alternating directions, and presented to the emergency department. Blood inflammatory markers were unremarkable, and a contrast-enhanced head CT scan revealed no abnormalities. The patient was discharged home with a provisional diagnosis of Meniere's disease. Two days later, the patient developed increasing lethargy and

A Case of Fulminant Listeria Rhombencephalitis with Brainstem Abscesses in a 37-Year-Old Immunocompetent Patient: From Vestibular Neuritis to Ondine's Curse.

We present a rare case of Listeria monocytogenes (LM) rhombencephalitis with the formation of multifocal abscesses in a young immunocompetent patient. His initial symptoms of dizziness, headache, and feeling generally unwell were put down to a coincidental coinfection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The unfortunate rapid progression to trigeminal, hypoglossal, vagal, facial, and abducens nuclei palsies, and then an acquired central hypoventilation syndrome, known as Ondine's curse, required a prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and prolonged mechanical

Tactile, acoustic and vestibular systems sum to elicit the startle reflex.

The startle reflex is elicited by intense tactile, acoustic or vestibular stimuli. Fast mechanoreceptors in each modality can respond to skin or head displacement. In each modality, stimulation of cranial nerves or primary sensory nuclei evokes startle-like responses. The most sensitive sites in rats are found in the ventral spinal trigeminal pathway, corresponding to inputs from the dorsal face. Cross-modal summation is stronger than intramodal temporal summation, suggesting that the convergence of acoustic, vestibular and tactile information is important for eliciting startle. This summation

Mesenrhombencephalitis: MR findings in nine patients.

OBJECTIVE: Mesenrhombencephalitis is a serious form of brainstem inflammation predominantly involving the deep and vital portions of the brain, that is, the mesencephalon (midbrain) and rhombencephalon (pons, medulla). Mesenrhombencephalitis is difficult to diagnose on the basis of clinical and laboratory findings alone, and access to this portion of the brain for surgical biopsy carries high morbidity. We describe the MR appearance of mesenrhombencephalitis and correlate the imaging findings with clinical information. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unenhanced and contrast-enhanced MR images of nine

GABAergic Neurons and Their Modulatory Effects on GnRH3 in Zebrafish.

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a major amino acid neurotransmitter in the vertebrate brain. To provide detailed information on the distribution of the GABA in zebrafish (Danio rerio), neurons were labeled with mCherry driven by the glutamic acid decarboxylase 67 (gad67) promoter. In the transgenic line Tg(gad67:mCherry), mCherry-positive gad67 cell bodies were predominantly localized to the olfactory bulb, pallial zones, subpallium zones, parvocellular preoptic nucleus, periventricular gray zone of optic tectum, torus semicircularis, posterior tuberculum, medial longitudinal fascicle, caudal zo

Acanthamoeba rhombencephalomyelitis: Novel white matter tract-based neuroinvasive pattern in a retrospective observational study from India.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a distinct rhombencephalomyelitis pattern in patients with central nervous system infection due to free-living amoebae, differing from the classical granulomatous amoebic encephalitis phenotype. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included twelve consecutive patients with brainstem and/or spinal cord involvement associated with central nervous system infection due to Acanthamoeba species at a tertiary care centre in Kerala, India. Diagnosis was confirmed by wet mount examination and amoeba species-specific 18S rRNA PCR of cerebrospinal fluid. Comprehensive e

The E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF220 maintains hindbrain Hox expression patterns through regulation of WDR5 stability.

The spatial and temporal linear expression of Hox genes establishes a regional Hox code, which is crucial for the antero-posterior (A-P) patterning, segmentation, and neuronal circuit development of the hindbrain. RNF220, an E3 ubiquitin ligase, is widely involved in neural development via targeting of multiple substrates. Here, we found that the expression of Hox genes in the pons was markedly up-regulated at the late developmental stage (post-embryonic day E15.5) in Rnf220-/- and Rnf220+/- mouse embryos. Single-nucleus RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis revealed different Hox de-repression pr

Middle Cerebral Artery Doppler before and after Fetal Spina Bifida Repair: An Indirect Sign of Hindbrain Compression and Decompression?

INTRODUCTION: Reduced middle cerebral artery resistance indices (MCA-RI) in fetuses with spina bifida (fSB) are commonly observed. Compression of neuronal pathways in the brainstem due to hindbrain herniation (HH) and disturbed cerebrospinal fluid circulation likely cause an imbalance of the autonomic nervous system. This may increase systemic vasoconstriction and compensatory increase cerebral vasodilation (like brain sparing). The aim of this study was to systematically analyze all fetal MCA-RI before and after fSB repair and to compare their correlation with the presence and postsurgical re

SARS-CoV-2 brainstem encephalitis in human inherited DBR1 deficiency.

Inherited deficiency of the RNA lariat-debranching enzyme 1 (DBR1) is a rare etiology of brainstem viral encephalitis. The cellular basis of disease and the range of viral predisposition are unclear. We report inherited DBR1 deficiency in a 14-year-old boy who suffered from isolated SARS-CoV-2 brainstem encephalitis. The patient is homozygous for a previously reported hypomorphic and pathogenic DBR1 variant (I120T). Consistently, DBR1 I120T/I120T fibroblasts from affected individuals from this and another unrelated kindred have similarly low levels of DBR1 protein and high levels of RNA lariat

The Gomez-Lopez-Hernandez Syndrome: The Contribution of 2 Hispanic Giants of Pediatric Neurology.

The specialty of Pediatric Neurology emerged during the 20th century, a period in which many neurologists played significant roles in revolutionizing this field. Two acclaimed pediatric neurologists of Hispanic origin, Drs Manual Gomez and Arturo Lopez-Hernandez, made substantial contributions to the literature on pediatric neurology. One of their remarkable contributions was their discovery of a new, rare neurocutaneous syndrome with variable phenotype, the Gomez-Lopez-Hernandez syndrome (GLHS). Here, we describe the current understanding of GLHS and the historical background of how 2 celebra

Rhomboencephalosynapsis: Review of the Literature.

Rhombencephalosynapsis is a rare congenital anomaly, characterized by partial or total agenesis of the cerebellar vermis with midline fusion of the cerebellar hemispheres, dentate nuclei, and the superior cerebellar peduncles, creating the distinctive keyhole appearance of the fourth ventricle. Rhombencephalosynapsis can be isolated or can occur in association with other congenital anomalies and syndromes such as Gómez-López-Hernández syndrome (GLHS) or VACTERL: vertebral anomalies (V), anal atresia (A), cardiovascular defects (C), esophageal atresia and/or tracheoesophageal fistula (TE), and

Detailed Analysis of Hydrocephalus and Hindbrain Herniation After Prenatal and Postnatal Myelomeningocele Closure: Report From a Single Institution.

BACKGROUND: The Management of Myelomeningocele Study (MOMS) demonstrated that fetal myelomeningocele (fMMC) closure results in improved hydrocephalus and hindbrain herniation when compared to postnatal closure. OBJECTIVE: To report on the outcomes of a single institution's experience in the post-MOMS era, with regard to hydrocephalus absence and hindbrain herniation resolution. METHODS: A single-center retrospective study of a subset of post-MOMS patients who underwent fetal/postnatal myelomeningocele closure was performed. Primary outcomes included cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion status

Diagnostic exercise: suppurative rhombencephalitis and meningitis in a goat.

A 1-year-old female Boer goat was presented for necropsy following spontaneous death and history of acute recumbency, nystagmus, and sialorrhea. A swollen area was grossly observed in the brainstem at the level of the pons. On cut surface, the right cerebellar peduncles were expanded by a focal, pale, poorly demarcated, slightly depressed, and soft area of malacia. Microscopically, this area contained diffuse edema and necrosis, with microabscesses, neuronal necrosis, neuronophagia, axonal spheroids, vasculitis, and perivascular accumulations of lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages, and neut

Partial rhombencephalosynapsis: prenatal MR imaging diagnosis and postnatal follow up.

We present a case of partial rhombencephalosynapsis, diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in fetus aged 27 gestational weeks, in a dizygotic twin pregnancy. The distinctive MRI features of this cerebellar malformation (segmental hypogenesis of the cerebellar vermis, partial fusion of the cerebellar hemispheres and dentate nuclei) without associated cerebral abnormalities were confirmed by 32-weeks prenatal and 3-months postnatal MRI studies. At the age of 12 months the affected twin had a slight delay in psychomotor development, mild hypotonia with normal cognitive development. To th

Embryonic origin of gustatory cranial sensory neurons.

Cranial nerves VII, IX and X provide both gustatory (taste) and non-gustatory (touch, pain, temperature) innervation to the oral cavity of vertebrates. Gustatory neurons innervate taste buds and project centrally to the rostral nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), whereas neurons providing general epithelial innervation to the oropharynx project to non-gustatory hindbrain regions, i.e., spinal trigeminal nucleus. In addition to this dichotomy in function, cranial ganglia VII, IX and X have dual embryonic origins, comprising sensory neurons derived from both cranial neural crest and epibranchia
