Effect of radiologic contrast media and local anaesthetics on the blood-brain barrier and on the leptomeninges.

The leptomeninges of cats were exposed to lidocaine, metrizamide and methiodal sodium and compared with control brains exposed to Ringer's solution. As a sign of blood-brain barrier damage, an increased extravasation of albumin into the cerebral cortex was recorded after exposure to methiodal sodium; lidocaine or metrizamide did not produce such damage. Scanning electron microscopy revealed minor cellular reactions in the mesothelial cells of the leptomeninges after application of metrizamide, lidocaine and Ringer's solution. Methiodal sodium produced an extensive cellular damage of the leptom

Calcium alters the sensitivity of intact horizontal cells to dopamine antagonists.

Horizontal cells of the carp retina possess dopamine receptors linked to adenylate cyclase. Isolated, intact horizontal cells respond to micromolar concentrations of dopamine, whereas nanomolar concentrations of haloperidol, (+)-butaclamol, and flupenthixol block the dopamine response. Preincubation in Ringer's solution containing increased levels of Ca2+ (5-110 mM) decreases the sensitivity of the cells to these antagonists by 1,000-10,000 times. Dopamine sensitivity of the cells is not affected by Ca2+ levels in the preincubation medium. Preincubation of the cells in Ringer's solution contai

Barbiturates and transmitter release at the frog neuromuscular junction.

The effects of the convulsant and anticonvulsant barbiturates, 5(2-cyclohexylidine ethyl)-5-ethyl barbituric acid (CHEB) an phenobarbital (PHB) were studied at the frog neuromuscular junction. Spontaneous transmitter liberation was augmented by both drugs irrespective of the external Ca2+ concentration, but CHEB was considerably more active than PHB. Miniature end plate potential amplitude was equally reduced by both drugs. The net effect of these agents on end plate potential (e.p.p.) amplitude varied depending on the external Ca2+ concentration. In Ca2+-deficient Ringer's solution both drugs

[In vitro studies of the beat frequency of ciliary cell cultures after short-term exposure to SO2 and NO2].

Mucociliary transport is an important defense mechanism of the respiratory tract. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of SO2 and NO2 at different concentrations on ciliary beat frequency (ZSF). Single ciliated cells were obtained from 25 volunteers by nose brush. ZSF was quantified using video-interference-microscopy. The cells were placed on a polycarbonate membrane, which was in contact with the surface of a reservoir filled with RPMI medium (bicarbonate buffered) or electrolyte solution (Ringer), allowing the cells to be supplied by capillarity. In an exposure chamber the ce

Crystalloid fluids choices during cardiopulmonary bypass, outcomes of acid-base and lactate levels in cardio surgery.

BACKGROUND: Ultrafiltration is integral to cardiopulmonary bypass, yet the optimal replacement fluid for zero-balance ultrafiltration requires further investigation to guide clinical practice. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of Normal saline, Ringer's solution, and Ringer's lactate on lactate management, acid-base balance, and clinical outcomes. METHODS: This semi-experimental study enrolled 90 patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) into three groups of 30. In Group-R, Ringer's solution was used as replacement fluid in Z-BUF. In Group-RL, Ringer's lactate and in Group-NS, N

Phenytoin sodium solubility in three intravenous solutions.

The solubility of phenytoin sodium injection of two manufacturer's was studied in three intravenous fluids, 0.9% sodium chloride, lactated Ringer's, and four manufacturers 5% dextrose injections. Phenytoin sodium for injection was added to 250 ml of an intravenous fluid to give calculated initial concentrations of 0.40, 0.98, 2.38, and 4.55 mg/ml. The pH of each solution was determined before and after the addition of phenytoin. Visual examination and nephelometric measurements for crystals were performed at various times between 5 and 1440 minutes after mixing. Phenytoin concentration was det

Regulation of fluid flow through corneal stroma in the bullfrog.

Regulation of fluid flow through corneal stroma was investigated in the bullfrog. Corneal specimens were mounted by clamping their limbal sclera between the two chambers of a Ussing-type chamber. The epithelial surface was covered with Ringer's solution, while the endothelial surface was superfused with Ringer's solution at various pressures ranging from 0-60 mm Hg. At 0 mm Hg, the cornea swelled, while at 10 mm Hg the corneal thickness remained unchanged. Further elevation of the hydrostatic pressure of the endothelial superfusion solution caused a decrease in corneal thickness, suggesting th

In vitro corrosion behavior and microstructure examination of a gallium-based restorative.

Concerns of mercury toxicity have led to the development of gallium-based restorative materials to replace dental amalgam. A new gallium-based dental restorative, Galloy, was compared with a high-copper amalgam, Permite, for anodic polarization behavior in deoxygenated Ringer's solution and by immersion testing in normal Ringer's solution at 37 degrees C. Corrosion products were analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry and transmission electron diffraction. The data from both sources were consistent with the presence of alpha-Ga2O3 and SnO2 as the primary corrosion products of Gallo

Acute intravascular volume expansion with rapidly administered crystalloid or colloid in the setting of moderate hypovolemia.

UNLABELLED: Although the distribution of various crystalloid and colloid solutions at equilibrium has been well established, the acute peak expansion of intravascular volume that can be achieved with the rapid administration of crystalloid or colloid is unknown. We studied eight healthy male subjects in a two-part crossover trial designed to assess the maximal increase in intravascular volume achieved with 1000 mL of lactated Ringer's solution compared with the same volume of 6% Hetastarch. Subjects were made moderately hypovolemic by the withdrawal of 900 mL of blood, and then the crystalloid

[Mono- or biphasic release of gastrin. Results after isolated antrum perfusion in vitro].

In an in vivo preparation, isolated rat antra were perfused with different releasing agents in an oxygenated Krebs-Ringer-A solution. Upon perfusion with acetylcholine (+ 0,1 mM eserine), the mean gastrin levels in the effluent increased within 2 min to 4 times the basal level, while there was a smaller second release after 20 min. During perfusion with 50 mM glycine and 30 mM calcium chloride containing Krebs-Ringer-A solution gastrin levels in the effluent increased within 4 min to twice the basal level without a secondary release of gastrin. Perfusion with eserine alone or with Krebs-Ringer

[Is physiological saline really physiological? Hyponatreamia treatment--small deviations from the rules of appropriate therapy create serious complications and side effects].

Physiological saline can hardly be treated as physiological as it contains qualitatively and quantitatively different amounts of electrolytes. In particular, it contains 50% more chlorine ions than serum. Physiological saline can cause metabolic acidosis and in diabetic patients hyperchloremic acidosis. In comparison with Ringer solution and plasma-lyte, physiological saline is causing higher number of untoward effects and mortality associated with surgery. Ringer solution should be used in the situations requiring expansion of extracellular fluid. Physiological saline is a solution of choice

Population-based volume kinetics of crystalloids and colloids in healthy volunteers.

We characterized the volume kinetics of crystalloid solutions (Ringer's lactate solution and 5% dextrose water) and colloid solutions (6% tetrastarch and 10% pentastarch) by nonlinear mixed-effects modeling in healthy volunteers. We also assessed whether the bioelectrical impedance analysis parameters are significant covariates for volume kinetic parameters. Twelve male volunteers were randomly allocated to four groups, and each group received the four fluid solutions in specified sequences, separated by 1-week intervals to avoid any carryover effects. Volunteers received 40 ml/kg Ringer's lac

The effect of various resuscitative regimens on hemorrhagic shock in puppies.

Since shock secondary to hemorrhage is not infrequently encountered in the pediatric patient, a puppy model was devised to help measure and monitor cardiovascular and metabolic changes that occur before and after resuscitation from hypovolemic shock (mean arterial pressure of 50 mm Hg for 1 hr). Three resuscitation protocols were compared: whole blood (replacement:shed) 1:1, 5% albumin in Ringer's lactate 1:1; and Ringer's lactate 3:1. All dogs survived the experiment and responded similarly during the shock period. Thermal dilution cardiac output rose in all groups after resuscitation; howeve

Does fetal acidosis develop with maternal glucose infusion during normal labor?

The actual effects of glucose infusion on fetal acid-base status were studied during 125 normal deliveries in which plasma glucose and acid-base parameters were determined after maternal infusion of either 10% glucose or Ringer's solution. After 80 minutes, mean (+/- SD) plasma glucose levels were significantly higher in the glucose group (N = 59) than in the Ringer's group (N = 66), both for the mother (183.6 +/- 46.8 versus 95.3 +/- 18.0 mg/dL) and the fetus (108.4 +/- 41.4 versus 64.8 +/- 16.2 mg/dL).
