Dissecting Bone Marrow Fibrosis in Philadelphia-Negative Myeloproliferative Neoplasms: Multiple Roads Lead to Rome.

Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), a spectrum of blood malignancies characterized by uncontrolled myeloid proliferation, persist as a key challenge in onco-hematology due to their intricate molecular background, heterogeneous clinical phenotypes, and variable prognoses. Although generally accepted as indolent disorders, a considerable fraction of MPN patients exhibit progressive, and sometimes accelerated, bone marrow fibrosis, reflecting a critical shift toward a more debilitating condition marked by an increased symptom burden. As marrow scarring advances, hematopoieti

Guidance for Fecal Microbiota Transplantation Trials in Ulcerative Colitis: The Second ROME Consensus Conference.

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is emerging as a potential treatment modality for individuals living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Despite its promise, the effectiveness of FMT for treating IBD, particularly for ulcerative colitis (UC), still requires thorough clinical investigation. Notwithstanding differences in methodologies, current studies demonstrate its potential for inducing remission in UC patients. Therefore, standardized and robust randomized clinical trials (RCTs) are needed to further support its efficacy for managing UC. The aim of the second Rome Cons

Rome IV Clinical Criteria and Management of Functional Constipation: Indonesian Health Care Professionals' Perspective.

PURPOSE: The updated ROME IV criteria for functional constipation (FC) in children were published in 2016. However, information on the use of these criteria is scarce. This study aimed to report the frequency of the use of the ROME IV criteria by Indonesian pediatricians and general practitioners (GPs) in FC management in infants and toddlers. METHODS: An anonymous cross-sectional online survey was conducted between November 2021 and March 2022. RESULTS: A total of 248 respondents (183 pediatricians and 65 GPs) from 24 Indonesian provinces completed the survey. Most respondents reported an e

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Bloating: Results From the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Bloating is a common symptom in the general population and among disorders of gut-brain interaction, although its prevalence has not been well characterized. The aim of this study was to report the prevalence of bloating as a symptom in the worldwide population and to identify factors associated with this symptom in the general population. METHODS: Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study internet survey data were analyzed. Rome III functional dyspepsia subdivision in PDS and EPS: recognizing postprandial symptoms reduces overlap.

BACKGROUND: The Rome III consensus proposed to subdivide functional dyspepsia (FD) into two groups: meal-related dyspepsia or postprandial distress syndrome (PDS), and meal-unrelated dyspepsia or epigastric pain syndrome (EPS). However, in clinical practice, overlap between both has been reported to be as high as 50%, thereby hampering clinical applicability. Although EPS is referred to as meal-unrelated dyspepsia, relationship of symptoms to meal ingestion in this category is not formally addressed in the Rome III criteria. The aim of our study was to investigate whether taking into account t

Prevalence of HIV infection and risk behaviour among street prostitutes in Rome, 1997-1998.

A cross-sectional survey was carried out between April 1997 and February 1998 among street prostitutes in Rome. The study population (n = 142) consisted of 102 women and 40 transsexuals: 20% from Western Europe, 38% Eastern Europe, 23% Latin America and 17% Africa. Eight per cent of the women and 2% of the transsexuals report a history of injecting drug use. Only 38% of the women with a stable partner reported use of contraceptives and 33% of them ha

Rethinking Catheters to Reduce Costs in Urodynamic Evaluation: Do All Roads Lead to Rome?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility, safety, and cost-effectiveness of manually manufactured rectal balloon catheters for urodynamic testing as a potential alternative to conventional pre-fabricated devices. METHODS: After institutional ethics approval, 84 patients scheduled for urodynamic evaluation due to storage and/or voiding lower urinary tract symptoms were prospectively randomized to undergo testing with two different models of handmade rectal balloon catheters. Devices were constructed using the finger portion of non-sterile latex gloves fixed to a 12 Fr urethral catheter with eith

Enhancing Infectious Disease Preparedness in Rome: The Lazio Regional Network During the 2025 Jubilee.

In 2025, Rome hosted the Catholic Jubilee, recording over 33 million cumulative pilgrim attendances while simultaneously facing the death of Pope Francis, the election of Pope Leo XIV, and a regional West Nile Virus (WNV) outbreak. This commentary describes the Lazio Region's preparedness strategy, based on adapting an existing Hub-and-Spoke infectious diseases network integrating surveillance with Regional Service for Epidemiology, Surveillance and Control of Infectious Diseases (SERESMI) laboratory support, telemedicine, and clinical management. Preparatory measures included an additional Hu

Hepatitis B virus prevalence, susceptibility and care engagement among vulnerable migrant populations in Rome.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a leading cause of morbidity and liver-related mortality globally. Vulnerable migrant populations often experience challenges with accessing testing, vaccination and care, both before and after arrival. METHODS: Asylum seekers and undocumented migrants hosted in six reception facilities in metropolitan Rome were prospectively offered screening for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), surface antibodies (anti-HBs) and core antibodies (anti-HBc). Individuals with HBsAg positivity were assisted in accessing a specialist referral service, with support a

Perceptions, Definitions, and Therapeutic Interventions for Occasional Constipation: A Rome Working Group Consensus Document.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Functional constipation is the most common of the disorders of gut-brain interaction, affecting approximately 12% of the world population. Although classically considered a chronic condition, many individuals experience shorter yet repetitive bouts of constipation representing a different clinical entity. There has been increased interest in this latter disorder, which has recently been classified as occasional constipation. This Rome Foundation working group document reflects the consensus of an international team of specialists who summarized currently available research t

Paleopathological evidence of paranasal lesions: Two cases of frontal sinus osteomata from Imperial Rome.

The archaeological excavations carried out in 1999 in the Collatina necropolis of the Roman Imperial Age (1st-3rd centuries AD) (Rome, Italy) discovered the skeletal remains of two adult males with evidence of paranasal lesions. Both individuals showed postmortem damage in the frontal bone, through which it was possible to macroscopically detect an oblong new bone formation. In both specimens, radiological examination of the defects' morphology showed new pediculated-based bone formations. Radiology also confirmed the presence of benign osseous masses arising from the right frontal sinus and i
